Now that Nexus have taken a turn that many - including myself - do not appreciate, I am considering using another hosting site for my mod. Can the BSN host mods so that users can download them, like the old Bioware Social Network Projects ?

Can the BSN host mods so that users can download them, like the old Bioware Social Network Projects ? Haven’t visited Nexus in a while - maybe a year? - what happened? I don’t know if we can “technically” do it, but will find out.

Basically they claim ownership of modders' works for perpetuity, to be able to create "mod collections" (or modpacks). I wouldn't be surprised if this leads to an attempt where they try to make money using other peoples' works. Had they stayed as a sharing site, not having that "premium user" stuff, I wouldn't be so opposed to this. But I smell a rat how things are developing there. www.nexusmods.com/news/14538 |

Haven’t visited Nexus in a while - maybe a year? - what happened? ...and that's why I don't like the timeframe they outlined. Like, not everyone is around there every day if you are more of small-time tinkerer. I mean, I can still remember when Nexus used to allow the download of smaller files without requiring registration... somewhen in 2016.  I mean BSN posts can link to files on the internet. The file would need to be stored somewhere else by the user? I'd say it would be good to have at least... say a pinned list of popular mods and where to get them around here somewhere.

Of course, I could always just put it on say OneDrive and provide a link to it here. It is only interesting for people who are into Dragon Age, anyway. :-)
It actually seems like MeWe at least has no limits on file formats, I tried posting a .dazip file there last night and it worked - though I do not know what happens if one tries to post something big; the file I posted was about 700 kb I think.
But my preferred way of sharing my mod would be to be able to upload it here, las a Project, just like in the old days of the original Bioware Social Network. :-)

OK, if interested, see if you can get access to the mod file and documentation here: LINK Click hereNote that this version will not be working well, as I used resources I have later decided to remove when I made this build (since I don't want too many dependencies now that Nexusmods in about a month will become a site I will visit VERY seldom, if at all). Also, this version does not include the bundled files required for Awakening in the OC (which means you'll have to have a working install of that anyway). A new build is coming later in the summer, which hopefully will work better. ;-) This link is for testing if it is at all possible - and feasible - to host it simply using OneDrive, and that links there work as intended. |

My 2c on Nexus -
I have been modding for almost 20 years now. I don't release much, but I play what I mod a fair amount, and definitely use mods from more skilled authors than myself, a great deal.
Nexus isn't taking ownership of anything. If you understand what you are doing as a modder, you understand that you own none of it. You are modding someone else's IP. It doesn't really belong to you.
Nexus is making sure mods don't disappear because someone gets butthurt about something. This happens alot in the modding world, petty difference leading to taking the ball and going home. I don't have much sympathy for this sort of prideful childishness. Great, you made a mod. It's out there now, get over it or you shouldn't have released it.
I support the Nexus and believe it was the right decision.
ETA: I still love the Nexus. Every time I am going to play DA, ME, Witcher, Deus Ex, VTMB... I peruse what's new, and update what Nexus tells me I haven't updated. It is a great service to the end-user.
