It's still one of the saddest death in the history of mass effect. You can avoid it but it's way more hopefull and poetic when it does happen and the sacrifice gives new hope for the Krogan, but the sadness is still present...

Though I occasionally shoot him in the back and then kill Wrex on the off chance I didn't kill him in ME1.
Well I think this is poetic, he is the guy who worked on the improved genophage but in the end, he gives a new future for the krogans where they could prosper under the leadership of the reformist wrex and the wise urdnot bakara. I love Mordin, but I am not willing to doom an entire species under wreav's leadership or to sabotage data and kill eve. He is an awesome character, but he is not worth to sacrifice an entire people just for him.

Even Wrex was planning a murderous rampage of revenge.
