So we've largely been given two path options when it comes to how we upgrade our abilities. It's done the series fine so far, in a sense that I dont see many complaints about it. That said, do you think a new game in the franchise should see an overhaul to the system? Maybe more path options, or the ability to specialize in a particular ability? I could see the latter being a thing, where - once you've maxed it - maybe you can expend two skill points (instead of 1) to gain a more powerful benefit to said ability.

Yes, the ability to specialize in a particular ability could be a good one. The thing is the more there are paths in the tree, the more daunting the balancing becomes. I dont want another "shockwave spam can get you through the game (but will make you nauseous because the screen shakes like hell)" stuff.

As long as they don't go the theme route like they have with Dragon Age I am all for them trying different things. That being said if they just alter what is already there for like you said there hasn't been a lot of complaints I am fine with that as well. Just no themes.

I want meaningful skill trees and good game mechanics. In short, as long as they are good and meaningful I will be a happy phantom. Side note for the rule of funny, able to use the Iconic Phantom's sync kill anyone with any weapon including the Krogan Warhammer.

You forgot: Plus a passive tree and a melee & hitpoint tree. And those were often synergisable. In all it was working quite well - not too convoluted and still allowed for a somewhat varied gameplay. MEA had the free classes but the bullet sponge kinda railroaded the build, but that's just me. I guess keeping it simpler allows for more controlled balance and tighter gameplay. I especially liked it in ME3MP where I could pick a class and go with it for a match then switch to another. Sticking with one way to play in campaign - I guess it depends on how long we have to stick with it. I like to have a bit more variety in campaign.
