I think that overall, the impact of any one developer (who is not a lead) in a video game project is overstated. At the end of the day, delivering a video game, or any product, requires teamwork. I'm sure anyone who has worked with a big team knows that colleagues come with all sorts of beliefs, work ethics, and talents. These can obviously influence the type of work that they will produce. However, within this context, where a team of writers exchange ideas and the lead decides which content to approve, the thought of a single developer, regardless of their beliefs, "ruining" a massive video game is a stretch for me, especially since Sam Maggs is not the lead writer. The story mistakes for the Last Jedi, or even Mass Effect 3, where leads and upper management dictated where the main story would go, is not an equal comparison. In any case, I feel reassured by the PlayStation blog post, where they state multiple times that their plan is to respect the story and characters from the original. I'm sure we'll be seeing some small degree of change in character dialogues and story, but that is to be expected with a remake. I'm still excited to see how they modernize the game. If they can update the graphics/gameplay and expand the story/characters while respecting the originals, that would be great! Worst comes to worse, we'll always have the originals to go back to. I see no downside to this remake

I'm just wary of Sam Maggs, is that too much of a criticism? So long as it stays civil, there were some nasty fights going on here. I will personally encourage all here to be civil and to be tentatively suspicious but not that is the only topic being discussed. Have any of you given though to what I warned about those same people using reactions such as the ones here to their advantage? If they do a bad job then give them respectful critics and if they surprise us with the game being better than we though and surpasses that then we are better for it while delivering critics (both good and bad in both cases). Don't you think her comments where specifically to raise other types of attention for the KOTOR Remake? There is no such thing as bad publicity as they say so please, share memes here and there but let's also discuss things as calmed as possible.

I'm not sure what to think of a KotOR remake. Guess we'll have to wait and see how much of a fuck up is made (or not) After all failure is an option.

Going forward, please discuss KOTOR Remake as you will, but please leave individual developers out of it unless they comment on the KOTOR Remake in the press (and then their involvement in the topic should stay civil and relevant) But there is nothing to talk about, except the current developers. There's not even a bullshot of the game. Then discuss Aspyr, the developers. It appears you and many others are unable to discuss an individual developer without making personal attacks on said individual developer.

I'm just wary of Sam Maggs, is that too much of a criticism? No, assuming you are wary of her ability as a writer, based on her past performance. Because that is both civil and limited.

I think that overall, the impact of any one developer (who is not a lead) in a video game project is overstated That reminds me that time Anita visited Naughty Dog. Don't underestimate what damage can be done, even in passing. I haven't played the Last of Us 2, though I have heard about that backlash. In Naughty Dog's case, the director Neil Druckmann held Anita in high regard, and he was the creative director and lead writer for that game. Hence, it's certainly possible that she provided advice for the story that Druckmann used as guidelines for the rest of his team. Since he is the director, he would no doubt have a big say on the themes and story itself. However, I don't see that as very likely for the KOTOR remake. The Last of Us 2 was an original story, a blank canvas. Meanwhile, the KOTOR remake already has an expected story and characters, hence they can't deviate too heavily from that, unless they want a fan backlash. There are also developers from the original KOTOR at Aspyr who will no doubt provide their input to ensure the game remains on the right track.

The danger is to put original KOTOR on a pedestal. It was solid BioWare writing of its day (I see similarities to Dragon Age Origins) But as the original is (in my view) essentially unplayable for a modern audience, they should press ahead with what they want to do, whilst respecting the original. Who knows how much they will elaborate? The romance options needing a significant upgrade seems pretty obvious. The'll do away with the silent protagonist I would have thought. Maybe it'll have multiplayer. Do Aspyr pack their games with microtransactions? Either way, it'll be nice to have a new version fit for today, I enjoyed the original.

People who don't want to learn D20. Combat mechanics wasn't what I was thinking about, but you might be right. Revamping the combat mechanics are the first thing they thought about, I'm sure. And they are basically forced to do it because I doubt Hasbro will allow them to use the old D20 rule set. Then probably voiced Revan and some choice/romances options being tweaked added. Romances are a very popular feature, so unless LucasFilms is forcing a canon storyline without choices, Juhani's romance should be completed and for sake of parity, Carth probably made available to both gender (no idea who could be a male gay romance otherwise). Also, it seems some people don't know that KoTOR storyline had special content only for female Revan (it wasn't just Juhani) that was cut in the original.

Out of curiosity, when did people last play the original? I had a try when it went backward-compatible on Xbox but my brain seized up after about 5 minutes. (I don't doubt the excellence of the original, I just think it has aged badly)

Loved them still even though the graphics are a bit off these days. I did not use any gfx mods... Loved them still. Also never could bring myself to be a Sith.

I started replaying it again this weekend after the remake announcement to get ideas about what things would most need improvement. It had been probably 5 years before that. I've actually been surprised how playable it still is. The prologue could be improved a lot but gets much better after that. Forgot how so many quests have several ways to complete them...we could use a lot more of that in current games. I'll make a complete list once I get all the way through.

If you have a 4K UHD TV, an HDMI2 cable, and an Xbox One X you can run some OG Xbox games in 4k either off of the disk (if you have still have it) or by paying and downloading it of the MS Store.
Some games MIGHT run at higher framerate (I'm not 100& sure about the framerate though), and I think there is some minor graphical improvements and it's the same with Jade Empire, Fable, Halo, and all the other OG Xbox games that are backwards compatible.

The biggest improvement I can think of off the bat in terms of gameplay would be the ability to select individual abilities for hot-keying on a keyboard, just like Mass Effect had. It became a bit cumbersome to have to click through the ability list after every battle just to find Force Heal, for example.

As it's a remake not a remaster all options are open. I've seen some requests for a line-by-line duplicate other than in graphic quality - I suspect there is zero likelihood for that close a copy (nor should there be in my view).
