Hey there! Hope you're all having an enjoyable afternoon/evening/what-have-you. Forgive me if I posted this in the wrong place; I did some digging around and couldn't find an answer to my question in any other threads, so I decided to ask here.
What is this forum's policy on posting on old threads? Can I comment on a thread that hasn't been posted on in a month? Three months? How old does a thread have to be to be considered dead? I know necroposting is generally frowned upon, but I didn't see anything explicitly saying it wasn't allowed, so I figured it must be one of those 'unspoken rule' type things. I just don't want to pull an embarrassing noob maneuver and accidentally get a thread locked or something lol.

I'll tell you what, I'll go find the oldest thread I can find, and see what happens! Be right back.

Here we are: bsn.boards.net/post/1495030/threadI'll let you know if I get the thumbscrews. I'm betting no one notices. The subforum I did that in isn't going to report it. I guess that means it's probably not the best experiment, but that's okay, because I knew how it was going to turn out. Necroposting is fine around here, as far as I know.
In fact, doing it once in a while is good for the soul. Reminds us of the past, shows us where we came from, all that stuff. Plus good jokes, you never want to let those be forgotten.

ThatDamnableRogue , no official policy against them. I necro’d The Wheel of Time thread myself a week or so ago. As long as you’re not doing it all the time and/or to cause trouble, it’s fine. Usually, if a thread has been buried for long enough, it’s best to just start a new one, but we assume good intentions until/unless experience teaches us otherwise.

Good to know! Thanks for the spontaneous experiment and the quick answer, guys Edit: I'm gonna assume that as long as the thread's still on page 1 of the board I'm viewing, it's safe to post on.

<evil laugh> Never understood the aversion to simply continuing an old conversation. I think - though could be mistaken - there was an actual rule against it on BSN Prime, wasn't there? Not that that made any sense, but that's possibly where the 'stigma' comes from.

Not that that made any sense, but that's possibly where the 'stigma' comes from. I think the stigma is older than that, though I'm not sure where it began. I can understand it in some situation like Answers HQ where using or necroing a thread that's been marked solved would be a bit counterproductive.
Decided to do a little research and found this... Why is thread necro-ing a bad thing?

I think - though could be mistaken - there was an actual rule against it on BSN Prime, wasn't there? Technically, no, but in practice, there was. As far as I know, Raen and Stan never banned anyone for necroing threads unless they were doing it repeatedly in a short time. The official reason wouldn't be "necro," but "excessive trolling" or unproductive posting or somesuch. One of the MP devs who used to post on BSN (I forget which one, except that it wasn't Brojo) posted a thread in the staff/mod section that we were ultimately told about. It explained that necroing threads wasn't against the rules, and discouraged staff and mods from taking action against it. In his case, he was specifically citing old threads from the MP section that the users and devs would regularly "necro" to add to, expand on, or update information as the game's support cycle went on. However, when the modbots took over duties, they almost entirely ignored the rules, and threads were constantly locked for being "necro'd." On a few occasions, we were able to get non-mod staff to unlock them, but we never did manage to successfully convince the modbots that it wasn't against the rules (gawd I lost count of the number of times I would link the actual rules to moderators.)
