So if you thought the 9-10 year wait between DA games was bad, just wait until the at least 13 year wait between ME games.

DeMarle was in charge of the narrative and writing in all recent Deus Ex titles, including Mankind Divided, Human Revolution, and mobile spin-offs Deus Ex: Go and Deus Ex: The Fall.
She also created the story and led the writing team for 2021’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which won the Game Award for Best Narrative.
The narrative designer shared the BioWare news on her LinkedIn page on Friday, but did not specify any specific projects. It’s possible she could be involved in either the upcoming Dragon Age Dreadwolf or Mass Effect 4.
Speaking to GI.biz last summer, DeMarle discussed her view on the relationship between gameplay and narrative in game development.
“For many, many years working in this industry, I’ve known that story is often subservient to gameplay,” DeMarle said. “But if I understand the game and what is the feeling I’m trying to evoke for players, then I can understand that gameplay is trying to do it this way, and story is here to support that or bring it forward. How can the things I write help to emphasize the things the gameplay needs, etc.?
“As long as you always know the game you’re trying to make and understand why, then it just comes down to constant communication between narrative and gameplay, and constantly looking and understanding it from that point of view.”
- I'm guessing she'll be on the next ME, but I don't for sure just yet.

This seems like a good fit on both sides. I enjoyed DEHR, and what happened with DEMD had nothing to do with her work, which was again good. Have only heard good things about GoTG, but it sounds like a one and done game and I pretty much only buy games that I will want to replay. Call me crazy, won't be the first or last time
Anyways, this seems like good business. I am awkwardly surprised.

You forgot "or died of old age."
Or just got too old to be able to play due arthritis etc.

I wonder what a clean, unglitched "speed run" takes?
I assume the above video is taking liberties/using every opportunity to glitch or abusing broken game mechanisms. If this is not the case, please ignore a futile question!

Interesting. This is potentially quite good news. I really enjoyed both those Deus Ex games (played well after the release of Mankind Divided, so didn't get caught up in the shenanigans, although I was aware of them thanks to the JimQuisition). And as for Guardians of the Galaxy...um, yes please. DeMarle has - in my view - high quality work output in both player driven narrative games (DE) and more linear narrative games (GotG). If she is indeed working on the next ME, then that would be a positive, in my view.

So, this isn't April.

I read elsewhere, Where else could she go?
This seemed like an odd question to me initially, but there is something to it. It is a good fit for both parties, and in a space ripe for reinvigoration. She surely had other options, but considering all factors it was likely her target.
Commander Jensen Shepard never asked for augmented bangstick, but here we go!
(most Shepards from this forum definitely would have asked for augmented bangstick, it's fun for everyone!)

ah yes, speedruns. I like doing them from time to time. It's a change of pace. It add's replay value. I did a speedrun on the ps3 for ME1 with a time of 3 hours 26 minutes. Not bad for that console. I have the remaster on the ps4 and on the computer. I might do speedruns on them to see the difference in time.

I sorta assumed that the video was yours TBH.
I have played Mass Effect trilogy a lot. Too much. Possibly an unhealthy amount of times. No judgment, but I think you have played at least as much. With your drive for doing all the things in these games, I just went with "yeah, probably themikefest mike" and went on with my day until you posted this.
So, I encourage you to do a ME1 unglitched speedrun, just to see how fast you can do it. I know you know how to minimize LiaraVision lmao, and also how to recruit minimal squad. You are a great candidate to do this
Michael Gamble @gamblemike Oh, hey! I'm really excited to let you know that Mary DeMarle will be joining the Mass Effect team as Senior Narrative Director. You've seen her work in Guardians of the Galaxy & Deus Ex (to name a few!). She's amazing.
A list of credits that give me more hope then when we found out Chris Schlerf was announced as the Lead Writer for Andromeda. Of course I am not sure what exactly her responsibilities will be as Senior Narrative Director.
I wish the scope was clearly defined. I am comfortable with her having oversight and final say on narrative decisions for this game, but hopefully there is also someone like a Senior Continuity Director working closely with her to make something that is both new and exciting (why she was brought in) as well as being faithful to the worldbuilding that has come before (why I might be interested).
So, BioWare please give us a detailed management flowchart of ME:NXT with their individual responsibilities as well as oversight duties. This in no way shape or form would be used by bad actors to make me look bad

This is pretty good news, I think. DX:HR is IMO one of the greatest story games to this day. While the ending wasn't necessarily the best, the world building and the care with which the scenario was constructed was absolutely fantastic. I have a background in neuroscience and this game had the best researched background material on brain-machine interfaces I have seen in any Cyberpunk setting so far. Of course, it adapted to fit the setting but a lot of the concepts that they mention in those background datapads and dialogues are real and are (or were at the time) items of active research. They basically took those ideas and extrapolated it to a dystopian scenario perfectly, including all the consequences it might have on social life, markets, interpersonal relationships, etc. Maybe it was a little bit too focused on that one issue but it still worked super well for me. Also, all the little hints to the original Deus Ex were great in both HR and MD.
Mankind Divided was actually a very nice progression in the story, I thought. The game suffered from other issues like too much emphasis on that one city map and the cliffhanger ending which didn't get resolved because Square Enix decided they needed to make a Marvel superhero GaaS game and shuffled all their studios around like crazy. But that certainly was not the narrative team's fault.
As for GotG, I am not that much of a Marvel person but GotG really worked for me and was kind of a surprise hit for me last year (as I think it was for many). The cool thing here is: That game has incredibly good squad banter, something that is very important for BioWare games as we all know. It was witty and funny and you just couldn't help but fall in love with those characters.
So yea, she showed that she can do:
- Very good Stories
- Great world building
- Be respectful to the lore of an existing franchise
- Do characters and character interactions really well
With all that, i am very hopeful that the next ME may just be a good one when it comes to the writing (which to me is just about the most important aspect of the ME games anyway). Consider me positively inclined after these news.

Having a job is hardly an obstacle to playing. Kids don't have to be, either. With kids you do have less time but I've been gaming roughly the same amount after the kid as before the kid. You just need to agree on gaming time with the other parent. However, as a single parent it wouldn't really be possible unless you have grandparents or other babysitters readily available.

Just here to remind everyone that DEHR ending has AI telling you that you have to choose one out of three endings but you can always suicide in protest. She'll fit in.
P.S. The three options are: Destroy augs, Control augs, live happily together with augs (Synthesis).

Well, here's the rub on that one -
DEHR was published in 2011. Casey and Mac were roasted for literally copying the DEHR ending nearly verbatim.
So, you can see this as an indictment on Demarle, except she was worldbuilding with this ending and ME3 was worldending. Also, it was her original idea... Seriously, what kind of hacks are Casey and Mac to pretty much plagiarize another writer in their same genre?
This is legitimate criticism. And the criticism lands on BioWare.
Does that mean Shepard will return for ME4? People can preorder a themed N7 computer or themed N7 xbox series s/x with the controller and a copy of the game. Well done EA. Take my money. I'll be getting an xbox anyways because of the next Elder scrolls game. It might release the same year ME4 releases?
