Could go with the Battlefront system. You can do a manual cooldown early, wor overheat it with the chance at a "perfect reload" via a timed button press, that gives you no heat buildup for a while after.
Is already coded in Frostbite from those games.
I think the mixed ME3 system was fine though. Andromeda's would've been too if it weren't so easy to make disgustingly overpowered weapons via crafting.

Thermal Clips were added because, and I quote "We want CODs audience" and for no other reason. I know many people around either don't seem to remember that, or weren't here to see it, but there it is. They thought a lazy, half ass fake ammo system would attract COD players to their game. That's all it was. There is zero reason to have such a system In Universe, and very little reason to have it out of universe. Period.

Fun fact: They did implement the hybrid system in ME2. They just decided not to go with it. You can activate it with a coalesced edit though. The problem of course is that the game is not balanced for it now. IIRC, it also was never debugged, so it has a few quirks (such as, you cannot reload/pop the thermal clip unless your weapon is actually overheated, no wasting partially used thermal clips here).
I think with correct balancing, a hybrid system could have worked. Ammo would have had to be very sparse, so you would still have to deal with the overheating most of the time but in very difficult fights, you would have the option to just change clips. It would certainly have been more lore friendly, that's for sure.
Ah well, water under the bridge now. I never minded the overheat mechanic in ME1 but the clips also work fine. No biggie for me.

Halo infinite just did what I have been advocating since Mass Effect 2 Plasma weapons in halo infinite (overheating mechanic weapons) can be MANUALLY VENTED as a reload-like mechanic at any point during a firefight...failing to do so makes the weapon overheat normally. This concept had been around since GoW... Can we PLEASE dispense with thermal clips in ME5 and introduce a more lore friendly active ventilation mechanic for appropriate weapons so the developers have their "it feels more like a shooter" crutch (which is why thermal clips were introduced in ME2) while maintaining internal logic? Anyone else on board?
No. I hated the overheating in ME1 and IMHO a shooter that has overheating guns in it sucks anyway. It makes combat less fun and doesn't work. As a concept it might work in TV shows and movies but in video games in kills the flow and fun of a game.

No it does not, to claim it does is an illogical fallacy with no actual proof. Many modern shooters have venting mechanics and they are very popular and successful games. Assuming ammo is the only way to approach shooters is smooth brained and foolish.

I'd like to move away from thermal clips. Not sure, this would bridge the gap or not to make overheat work for more people but its a RPG, a action or shooter RPG sure but the RP part should mean that the setting and lore matter. And finding ammo boxes, and having clips fall off of enemies where it makes no damn sense hurts the game imo. I have low expectations that bioware gives a crap about their own lore though.

WHY would COD players be playing a game like ME2 to start with? Just laziness.

In ME1, you start out with a crappy assault rifle that overheats just by looking at it. You end the game with a Spectre X assault rifle or Kovalyov X that you've dropped "Frictionless Materials" in and you have a bullet hose that rarely overheats even with Inferno Ammo.
