The Kett only reproduce by transforming other races. But only select members of those races with the correct genes. The rest are killed or worked to death in camps. Even if they leave some members of those races out 'in the wild' they are making sure that the genetics they desire are dying out. Their only way to keep from a drastically contracting population is to constantly expand and find new races. But if those new races fight back, or the local 'Archon's' rebel, as arms-length regents are wont to do, then their population reduces some more.
So is Kett 'civilisation' on its last legs? Are they a dying people? It'll never get explored in the games as I doubt Andromeda will be visited again, but I felt the need to share never-the-less.

I don't think so. There is a whole Kett Empire somewhere in Andromeda. I forgot the main villain's name in ME:A, but he went against the wishes of his superiors. He basically formed a cult based on Exaltation. The main goal of these Kett was to Exalt as many races as they could to build up their ranks.

The Archon is going against the wishes of his superiors by going after Remnant tech instead of concentrating on exalting the races of Heleus. My point was that their Exaltation dogma was in itself leading to their demise. That's the whole Empire not just the local fleet. I do wonder how they evolved in the first place though if they only increase via Exaltation.

As for your initial question, I guess they are dying out if they depend on exaltation to bolster their numbers. Maybe their empire is fragile and the enslaved are rising up.

Maybe their empire is fragile and the enslaved are rising up. It would make them a more interesting antagonist if the franchise ever takes Andromeda forward again.

I could imagine them having evolved like any other species but lost their ability to reproduce naturally for some reason. It would make them a much cooler antagonist indeed, but I fear we will never find out.

I recently noticed that SAM actually hypothesises about this in the Codex.

Yeah, on this 5th full playthrough I've been trying to glean every little bit of information from the game that I might have previously overlooked. I'm sure I've read this entry before but it just didn't register fully until it was hypothesised here in more plain terms. It could have been one of those entries that get updates instead of being completely new entries so you have to look carefully through the entry if there is a notification.

The Wiki also contains these entries on Kett vassal races which further shows that they need constant expansion to continue existing leading to potential civil wars and vulnerability to races fighting back. Basically the Kett are screwed long-term.
Eealen One of the kett vassal races, the eelaen are a race that have been exalted past viable population. They now have become nomads who document and share knowledge.
Sirinde One of the kett vassal races, the sirinde, which possibly translates as "eat their dead with reverence", have genetically poisoned themselves to stop exaltation, now have become dependent on kett neuroscience to survive.

I have absolutely no recollection of any mentions of other vassal races so I wonder if the Wiki is solely based on the game itself?

These entries are based on a codex entry that is hidden behind a certain choice in an optional quest:
But there are a few entries that are 'not quite right', and apparently one can't edit pages anymore as simple visitor

I only just received the Aden quest and I do remember that secret intelligence from prior playthroughs. The Codex isn't easy to keep up with because the unread notifications can easily be erased with a flick of the mouse's third button and then you'll never find out what it was that you missed.
