I am currently installing it on my old gaming rig (built for ME3!!!1!) that has been repurposed to tasks more suited to a dignified elder. This is my third Linux distro, so not a total noob, but still a newb. Things to know - Creating a bootable thumbstick is a thing, for making a Windows installer or Linux. It can be done in numerous ways, but the most straightforward to me is using cmd/PowerShell and running diskpart. You can then select it, clean it, and make it a "primary partition" which makes it MBR/"bootable". Format, then put whatever stuff you want on there. In this case, SteamOS. The thumbdrive is named "steamingos" because most Linux distros, like Windows, are steaming piles of crap :/ (I am a miserable SoB, forgive me) Anyways, after creating that thumbdrive, just extract the Steam OS download onto that thumbdrive main directory. Make sure it is on the root directory and not in a folder, UEFI is finicky. Prep for the PC you are about to install to - BIOS needs to be set to boot from USB first. To do this, the thumbdrive needs to be in the PC before you enter BIOS (from restart is easy way, then F2/F8/Delete whatever it is for your system). Then in Boot section, choose that thumbdrive as primary boot. Secure Boot will not work with SteamOS - if this is alarming to you, I understand but it also isn't as bad as it sounds. I leave that to your own opinion. Save and exit. Install will commence. I am now choosing my language. From first glance, this is the least polished installer GUI of the distros I have used (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Manjaro, now SteamOS). My hope is that it handles GPU issues better than other distros, and also that it is lean. This PC is just a test lab, with a weak GPU, but it will be informative. With a GTX1030 on a 1050p monitor, it can run most older titles at decent settings, which again is just for testing. Not a daily driver yet, but this PC does other things too when it isn't having brain surgery. SteamOS is a fully functioning Linux distro, so I can run apps on it, browse internet, etc. This is gaming related, so if anyone has questions about how X works or if Y sucks or if Z is cool, feel free.
EDIT: DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU HATE YOURSELF OR LOVE TORTURE.

I've got to be honest, I opened this thread thinking you were going to be selling Steam Decks, and now I'm a little disappointed.

HA! I am selling nothing. I uninstalled this dumpsterfire today. Am installing PopOS. SteamOS is not at all ready for Prime Time on PC. There are lots of issues, and some of them for me were not worth the headache.
I would downvote the shit out of my OP if I could.

I remember going into a new job and the guy before me created a DNS server using a distribution of Linux I have never heard of. I couldn't even figure out the name of the editor the guy used and my boss chewed me out because I couldn't figure it out. So I politely asked them to show me where I could find any information on the distribution and they couldn't find any. I wound up just leaving the server alone with plans to build a new server using Windows based software so it would be easier for others to use and I quit before that happened.

Pop OS - is a decent distro. I like the desktop environment, I like that graphics work, and that the updater system seems to work properly through the gui - Ubuntu needs terminal love to update properly in my experience. It is well-documented for a Linux distro.
That said, it isn't without pains. Getting some things to work is just going to be a trial and error, or headdesk and lightbulb alternation, until the mystery is solved.
In my home environment, I have multiple "desktop" OS to deal with - 4 flavors of Linux (Raspbian for Pi-Hole, Android for Shield TV, DSM for Synology NAS, Pop OS for lab PC), Windows for gaming PC, and FreeBSD for my router. These mostly work the same, as they are all Unix based - if you have years behind the desk, some of these commands haven't changed for over 50 years.
This leads to a lot of confusion, frustration, and endless learning. My job involves computers quite often, so I guess I do this somewhat to try and stay relevant in a world that is finally determined to pass me by technologically. Keeping up is hard.
