These news are old I'm afraid. I think he is the lead writer since last year (or more), so...

Yes, but it has never been confirmed. People speculated the script was truly done when Schlerf left, but now we know it isn't. In fact, I would not be surprised if the game still doesn't have an ending or certain missions in the middle. Mac saying they were doing "polish, polish, polish" is a lie and I know it. They wouldn't have released such an incomplete gameplay showcase for E3 this year if it was actually ready to be polished.

There are less than six months until the game is released, unless they drop another delay on N7 day, which I don't see happening, it already happened at E3 this year.

I semi-like him. I admire his gumption, but he's kind of all talk about how good the game will be. He talks about how he wants it to wow us. Wrong focus if you ask me. It's too easy to say you want to do something. Similarly he said he wanted ME3 to "have meaning" but I felt the opposite compared to ME1 for the main plot and even ME2 to some extent, and there's the ending which he also is at least 50% responsible for. What "meaning" refered to I feel was all the artsy fartsy crap that emerged in ME3 with the child and the insanity of the endgame, The Crucible etc. I like his philosophies, but I think he talks too much about how amazing he wants it to be that doesn't support what (may) end up happening.

He's not a bad writer, but based on what we've seen, he does come up with some pretty questionable stuff when left to his own devices.

Oh HE'S responsible for the ME3 ending?? Wow. In that case, I'm even more excited for ME:A I happen to love the endings, and the nightmares Shepard has, and the way s/he is slowly falling apart, the desperate feeling of the last third of the game, and the mind-blowing ending that I TOTALLY wasn't expecting. So, this is good news

They wouldn't have been able to do the VO or level design or ANYTHING if the writing wasn't more or less done first. At this point they can't be writing much more than codeces.

Hmm. The ending of ME3 didn't ruin the game for me but I did think it was a bunch of pretentious nonsense. I'm sure there are other things he wrote in the series that I enjoyed but I sincerely hope the higher ups at Bioware are keeping a close watch.

I've always liked Mac Walters. Especially his characters. And I think some of the main faults of ME3 weren't really his. My main gripe was the lack of ME2 crew, but he said how much of a headache it was to account for all of them. He tried to make up for it by making the Citadel DLC (his idea) and the Foundation comics, so that was cool.
Some of his story writing leaves a lot to be desired though. And I don't just mean ME3. He also wrote Arrival, which sucked.

And not very high level codex entries, either. If you'll note all three games had the asari, turian, krogan, etc voiced. Others like the yahg (I don't believe) were.

Well, you should have good character interaction.
But if you're looking for plot... forget about it. This game's plot is going to be either stupid, nonsensical trash, reused, self contradicting or all of the above. My vote is on the later. Walters couldn't write his way out of wet toilet paper when it comes to plots. And the man does not care. He does not give shit about the material or the players. It's just a paycheck.
Best case scenario is a family sitcom with aliens and guns.

It's ok I won't assume the game is going be bad just because he's the lead writer. Gaming is a collective effort and many ideas will be balanced and corrected by other senior staff members.
I came to realize (by my own mistakes) that you should not expect always the worst based on previous experiences because Walters is a human being fallible like all of us but intelligent and rational like us. A person now isn't the same as he/she was couple of years ago. Time hones someone's mind. I know Walters is a professional and even if he would not admit it personally, he learned from the ME3 experience. I'm positive he will do his best to lead the writing team to success.
Always assume good intention with reserve. Being overly negative is as just bad and irrational as being hyped.

The thing is that Lead Writer is more a manager than a writer. He supervises actual writers and makes sure they are in touch with other departments. He can give some directions to maintain general game theme, like "there is not enough Cerberus in this romance", but what and how is up to writers.

I'm no fan of Walters, not going to lie. When the project started, his official role was that of "Creative director". If he has become lead writer, I'm not really happy about it, but we have no control over those decisions. On the bright side, after Schlerf's departure, they brought back John Dombrow to the company, and he has been writing for MEA for a long time.
For those who don't remember Dombrow, he joined Bioware at the time of ME 2 production. He wrote or co-wrote Garrus and Grunt in ME2, Garrus and Javik in ME 3, he was in charge of the Tuchanka storyline (including Priority Sur'Kesh), the Ardat Yakshi temple and Thessia. He was one of the main writers of the Leviathan DLC (while Walters claimed responsibility over Omega.... )
John Dombrow is very good friends with Patrick Weekes, one of the best writers left in the company, sadly no longer working for the Mass Effect franchise. If Mordin is not alive in ME 3, there's a salarian scientist called Padok Wiks. Padok Wiks is a joke name based on Patrick Weekes.
P.s: It's really good reading Linkenski's posts again. Good to see you here, brother!

What happened to him being creative director? If he's filling both roles, ME:A will be Foundation-levels of bad, story-wise.

If the writing was basically done when Schlerf left and Bioware just decided to hand his title off to Walters because they didn't want to hire someone else, I think "filling both roles" shouldn't have a huge impact on the story. There is also the possibility that the article writer just made a mistake and got Walters' title wrong. People are just so intent on panning this story before they even get a chance to read the Prologue. It's not the marketing hype-train, but the "anti-hype train" that's running off the rails around here.
