Palaven has Menae so it could be possible different Turian nations had a space race to Menae in their equivalent of the 1960s.
Could there be any races in Mass Effect that didn’t have a space race but instead focused on space probes and faster propulsion systems?
The space race was more interesting and inspiring than I realized. I checked out a show on Apple TV out of boredom as well as curiosity and it ends up igniting an interest in real space exploration. I binged watched movies like “Hidden Figures”, “The Right Stuff”, “First Man”, and “The Martian”.
I didn’t realize how dangerous those first spacecraft were. I didn’t know Neil Armstrong almost died on a Gemini mission. I didn’t know the first Apollo mission was a catastrophe. I didn’t know America was so willing to put so much risk into putting not one flag but six American flags on the Moon. I didn’t know space exploration had any benefits to technology that could be used on Earth.

Pretty sure the asari had a decent space race because they have these very competitive city states. Though their early space craft probably looked very different from ours, given that they had eezo on the plante's surface, so it was probably incorporated from the very start. I also expect their space race was maybe more of an open competition, almost like a sport rather then for some geopolitical power struggle. IIRC, while the city states had rivalries, actual wars were pretty rare in Thessia's history.
The turians probably had a much more military focused space race. Though I don't think we know how exactly Palaven was structured before their space age. We only know of the colonial wars, which happened way later but they do indicate that they have internally rivaling factions. Given that, I assume they had nation states on Palaven and given their culture, they were probably at war a lot. So I assume their space race would very much have been about who can put weapons platforms into orbit first.
With the salarians, it could have been rivalry between different clans and their scientists, who'd figure it out first. It could also have been that they used spy satellites a lot on other families.
So yea, I could imagine all of the council members having space races in their past for various reasons.
