I'm finally knda sorta trying to get into this game again. Got it years ago but had no clue of anything D&D, so the combat system got me killed and threw me off, but since I survived DAO and played some Baldur's Gate in the meantime, I'll try it again. Has anyone here experience with running a disc copy of the game (four CD version, if that matters) on an average Win 10 PC? I've got two main issue right know: First, it doesn't seem to save any options (gameplay or otherwise) and always resets them on reboot. Second, it seems to be inclined to randomly CTD at any moment, which seems to be a widespread issue?

A couple of questions first. What graphics card are you using? If you're using an integrated graphics card the game has problems with those. If you have an nvidia card got to the nvidia control panel and set KOTOR to use it, by default it's set to use your integrated card. When the game launches in options disable 'Frame Buffer Effects.' Also I forgot to mention are you using any mods? Not all mods are compatible. If you want to use mods here's a spoiler free lore friendly mod build that is guaranteed to work: www.reddit.com/r/kotor/wiki/kotormodbuildspoilerfree

It's and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660. Integrated is laptop-style, right? I had some fun with these on other games before I got the new PC. I've got a list of fixes from somewhere, even though they were from Win7 times. 1) Install DirectX 9.0c even if you have a more modern version 2) Install game using compatibility mode (XP SP2) for the setup.exe 3) Install patch 1.03 manually (no auto update) similarly 4) Remove read-only from the install directory 5) Replace mss32.dll 6) Use SecuRom fix 7) "Dantooine fix": Find swkotor.ini and add Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1 under [Graphic Options] 8) Make sure the game uses only one CPU core (if done via task manager, has to be repeated everytime game is booted up) As of now, I did 3, 4, 5 and 7. Need to take a look if single CPU core is done automatically. Getting rid of the writing protection also means it doesn't reset game options everytime. I made it off the ES at least without any CTDs. No mods for now. Want to go through it at least once without. After that it is very likely a thing of "if I find anything D&D which doesn't belong into SW, get rid of it". Thanks for the link though.

Oh, it's your first time playing? Well your in for a treat if you can stand the combat. The story is written by Drew Karpyshyn who wrote the first two Mass Effect games. While I like the sequel more the first one was what got me into Star Wars. The game uses a simplified version of D&D 3.0. When the game released it was first released on OG Xbox then later on PC. Playing mod free is the best way to go, then if you like the game after you complete it you can try any of the mods from the link I posted. Hope everything goes well.

SetAffinity to a single core. This may be helpful. Thread jogged my memory. IIRC, this can be done in Task Manager. You did the Dantooine Grass Fix, which is the most common issue for Nvidia GPUs. You should be able to run the game fine at max settings. I can't remember what version of the game you own? 4CD, DVD, Steam/GoG? Edit: SetAffinity can be done in your game shortcut, now memory comes back better. If Steam, do it in game properties, if CD/DVD make a custom shortcut with --SetAffinity=0 or whatever you like, to avoid using Task Manager every time. Helpful - www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Star_Wars:_Knights_of_the_Old_RepublicAlso, DeadlyStream forums can be very helpful for troubleshooting issues. If you mod the game, you will want to patch it with LAA patch (allows game to utilize 4GB of ram, vanilla it can only access 2)
