I am the Best of the Best /thread
So, this is about score discrepancy and host advantage. But it's not an epeen thread, you fucking scrubnards who I could easily beat 1v1 on your host. /thread
Obviously, lag is the big factor here. I can watch and see my shots not doing damage even with enemy animations showing otherwise - I see the dance, but no damage ticks on the bar. Can be seen to a lesser extent with powers - they visually land on your client connection and the visual feedback confirms this, then the Jack the Phantom stabs through each of the quad.
Yeah I have a quad you fucking two-nutted human wastes of oxygen /thread
How can this be improved? We used to bitch and moan about "netcode" with good reason despite the big brains saying "there's no such thing as "netcode". Sure OK buddy, but there is code that does the network work. Checkmate edglord, take the Shredder and HVB off of your Falcon you absolute mutant. /thread
Why am I bringing this up? Because epeen matters you twits, and I am obviously better than everybody and if there just wasn't lag you would all worship my dripping diapers like it was Mother's Milk.

^^^ This guy fucks.
Didn't say what.
...
Anyways, to be serious for a second - I am pretty good. I am better than 8/10. The 2/10 that are better than me, are so much better than me that it seems like a paradox.
However, I often play with people who are hosting and for me have a nearly unplayable lag factor. I persevere because I like to play the game when I want to play the game. I don't often "carry" this host and the lobby, but often will score 30/40k less than host for reasons described in the OP. Not my imagination, have been told this in multiple friend request messages on Origin.
I really actually don't care about the scoreboard, but I do think there are many ways it could be improved to be more indicative of team contribution. This is directly about lag though - is there a way to make P2P more like dedicated servers? I am ok with some mad Australian destroying my score, but I do want it to be more as a result of skill dominance than lol 600ms teleportation carries without end-game reward.
ETA - This is a constant point of refinement on Star Citizen. Sure, that's vaporware likely, but this is something serious MP games talk about and work on. Any of you actually have a clue what the limiting factors are? I obviously do not.

Latency cannot be overcome by space magic.
Predictive AI solves this problem, but creates another - no human body is actually playing the game anymore at that point - the AI will determine everything and the gameplay will simplify "resemble" the player's input. That's worse than what we have now.
Dedicated servers don't entirely solve the issue either. They are generally region locked, again for the insurmountable difficulty at hand - distance traveled for the flashing light on the optical cable. The speed of light is obviously too slow.
I posted this thread because it seemed funny to me, but also to field outside-the-box ideas. We need FTL fiber optics, then I can play with cricketer and dnought and DispenserOfLube and LordSirian (some for fun, some for reasons) on a level playing field and see their true brilliance (which exists for the former two) or for the latter their horseshit on full display for exactly what it is - manbaby with low skill floor, and mad cheater.
There can be no justice in this universe without latency free MP gaming.

Some otherwise good guns are so purely awful off host it makes me want to cry. the Venom... this is, probably, the single greatest reason why I host like 90% and prefer to play solo on my own host than play with a full team on someone else's. My favorite gun in the game is seriously affected by even moderate lag, and lots of my favorite powers and kits as well (biotic charge, dark sphere, etc). This, and the ps3 memory leak bullshit, are the only serious flaws in what is otherwise my favorite game of all time

Yeah biotic charge is another, you are ded, ded, ded if you have a class that relies on charge to keep yourself alive.

Vanguards are probably my favorite class overall, too. Something really satisfying about the high risk/high reward CQC playstyle (and they synergize perfectly with my favorite weapon class, shotguns). But its such a pain in the ass offhost, and doubly so if you're playing a Venom Vanguard (which I usually am).

Some of that is manageable. Targeting your enemy gets seriously distorted with 300ms+, while your RHA is actually not RHA because the game considers you a meter out in the open. Love the death jump when I warp meters from my client location where I'm plugging away to my host grave where I look like an idiot bleeding in the open. Sadly, the rush of the enemy is what makes the game compelling, and being able to take the fight to them when you want/need to. I don't see a way to remedy the situation with current technology. Originally, the host was authoritative in this game, and what we as clients saw on our screen more accurately reflected what was actually going on. To fix the Vanguard glitch, and probably some other desync issues that I can no longer clearly remember, they gave some authority to the client. This was a solution, but it was not perfect obviously as we all have complaints using some of our favorite guns off host. Beerfish - re: Crusader, stop trying to snipe headshot with it. When I started just firing at will with the clunker it became awesome even in Lagville. I still ADS most of the time, but once I have a solid shot I take it. I mostly play off host and that gun remains in my top 10 most used. Mine rightully belongs to my Geth Engineer though. Saber, yeah the whole purpose of the gun is to sploosh heads. It has lost favor over time, since Crusader is basically a better Saber. Venom.... god damn it is sad what lag does to the gun. I still use Falcon off-host for the Venom's purpose, because hellfire that thing sucks unless you have low ping. I think there is a solution. There are several actually, but some of them would money-gate the experience and that would suck badly. One part of it is... this already sucks thinking about it. If I wasn't sad I'd be laughing at my shithole country for not making high speed internet a utility because a lot of Americans would be gated by part of my solution - a minimum speed requirement. To play the next MP at any difficulty above Wood, you need to have 200down/20up or better. This would disqualify my current connection, as I get about 300/11. It is the upload speeds in America that are particularly bad, and even though in gaming we are sending small packets, we are sending them constantly and upload speed does matter FFS. I get irrationally angry thinking about ISP service, so I'll turn back to the game. This "solution" is my lowest price money gate. A lot of the world has 1000/1000, but of course Iowa and some other third world states are using satellite or DSL with speeds that would likely make them an awful host for anyone, anywhere, regardless of their personal ubernet at home. It is not a great solution. I don't like the idea of a wealth gate at all. We need help in the fight. ... That's what I have for today. You guys are scrubs.

This was a solution, but it was not perfect obviously as we all have complaints using some of our favorite guns off host. Yeah none of the off-host issues are game-breaking or disqualifying or anything- even in laggy games, you can play the game and even succeed (both individually and as a team) especially if you know how to work with/around lag issues. But it does mean adapting your playstyle to account for lag. Which really really sucks. It means the game can't really be played as intended (WorkingAsIntended@bioware.edu.email.net.gov) for many of the kits, builds, and weapons in the game if you're playing offhost. Now, some people seem to be better at tolerating this (and enjoy finding enjoyment in despite of it) than others, I'm definitely one of those with low tolerance/patience and so that's probably the main reason I have 150k solo masteries or whatever (may be slightly exaggerating there, but you get the idea) because I'd rather play the game the way it was intended + the way I want to play it by myself, than to deal with the lag bullshit on other people's host, with really the lone exception being games with friends/other BSN'ers, doing challenges and all those fun shenanigans we all used to get up to back in ME3mp's glory days.

I play off-host still for the epeen. It has just become a demented broken form, that allows for all sorts of excuses.
If I know I carried the team, but I didn't top the board by anything less than a significant margin, I know why and I am not mad. Same goes for the lagfest where I score 2nd by 30k but revived everyone including the Vanguard host (not a jab at you!) - I know what I did, and still feel the satisfaction mostly. Also, I know that if I wanted too, I could abandon the team concept and end up soloing half the match and get that top score, but what a pyrrhic victory that.
So, the scoreboard could better indicate contribution. Points should be given to the player for any positive team action. This creates a small balance issue maybe, but we have managed worse.
My epeen is invulnerable at this point, I am a slave to my own headcanon and nothing will dissuade me otherwise. If it did, I would drop dead. But I still want to play with others more than feed my peen. If I can't show the team my peen and have them lerve it, that's when I break down.
When I break down, the team breaks down. We can't have that.

Raise, and all in.
I play on WiFi from international locations, mostly Asia, some Europe. Lag, latency, and off-host topics addressed here are legion. Soloing gets boring to me fast, so pugging with those conditions it is.
But still, I play. Must have a masochistic streak.

We have played together a few times at least, I think. Maybe watching each other bounce-hop all over the map, with moonwalking Geth Primes.
Yes, it is a form of masochism, and also a sort of test. Can I adapt? I know I have a build for this lag, but I brought a Venom - is it worth it? Can I find the timing? Strong epeen can surge inside you, giving you focus and making you stronger. It can also boil over when all of sudden you get downed twelve times in 20 seconds, revives and gels be damned you are fucked son and why have I wasted my life in this stupid insignificant way, again?
The answer to lag, for the curious, is rapid fire weapons and hitscan powers. Doesn't matter the kit, but of course there are a few that do it better than others. Turian Sentinel is the MVP, Shield Boy is right there too.
Wifi? Good god man.

Agreed, good sir. I wonder sometimes about my seemingly unlimited taste for lag-pain. Then the TurSent, or indeed shield-boy, with the Geth Scanner of course, administers a salve to me epeen. Then, of course, brought back to reality with invisible turrets or banshees....
