Are you still on the tutorial missions? There's plenty of time to explore Paris, but you do have to get past the intro.

Ah, Paris. I really loved the city in this one, but the parkour was not yet good enough I'm afraid. At least on PC version where it still stutters from time to time heavily.

I didn't finish Unity (yet), but I thought the parkour was very smooth and enjoyable. I play KB&M.

Is black Flag any good or is it the same as Unity- follow, sneak, (get caught) runaway All the older AC games are similar gameplay-wise (as far as the common types of missions), but I don't really know what you mean by this. I think all of the games have tailing missions, but some have more than others, and they are not the majority of the game.

I just started playing this and while I am interested in the main character’s story the gameplay is not very engaging. Is the whole game like this -,following people, evading police and sneaking around? Can you actually roam around and explore? I have only played Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla so are all other AC games like Unity for game play? If all you've played are those 3, you are def in for some big differences going to the older games. And yes there are a ton of evade/blend and follow missions in the older games.

It is a good demonstration on why the people that really liked the AC games before Origins were disappointed with the game for it was in a lot of ways a complete re-imagining of how the games work and felt completely different.

I see. I guess I prefer the more recent games. I dont mind stealth play, but it seems like the older AC games feel a bit too repetitive for my liking.

To me, stealth is the whole point I think Valhalla and Odyssey are way more repetitive than the older games, though their length may contribute to that impression. But if you don't like sneaking around and knifing people in the back, then the older games may not be your thing. Are you going to finish more of Unity, though?

No - I keep getting caught and having to start over lol. Yeah the other games are long but it seems like there is more freedom to explore and more fighting options, but then again I’ve only played an hour or two of this game. I did play another AC game years ago but stopped after a couple of hours for the same reason- too much sneaking and running away for my liking .

I ended up really liking Unity in the end but it certainly was the AC game, where it took me the longest by far to get into.
They increased the difficulty quite a bit in this one, both for stealth and for combat.
Unity - more than any other AC games - makes you learn the correct patterns to counter different enemy types. Some you have to parry, some you have to evade with the right timing, some need you to attack with fast strikes, others need slow and heavy attacks. Once you know what you are doing and when you have some decent equipment, it's actually pretty well manageable but especially the beginning is pretty hard.
In general - as has been said by a couple of people already - if you enjoy the last three games with their fairly free gameplay, the older ones may not necessarily be your cup of tea. The gameplay since Origins is more a rip-off of Witcher 3 and other open world RPGs, whereas the older games are much more action-adventures with strong stealth elements.
Even so, maybe give Black Flag a shot. It's a bit easier than Unity, especially in combat and it allows for a bit more straight forward aggressive gameplay, only needing stealth in a couple of missions. Also, it had by far the best ship compat in an AC, so if you enjoyed roaming around with the Adrestia in Odyssey, you'll probably love the Jackdaw in Black Flag (and Rogue because that's basically just a Black Flag asset flip with a new story ;D).

Once you know what you are doing and when you have some decent equipment, it's actually pretty well manageable but especially the beginning is pretty hard. I appreciated the difficulty of combat being brought back. Especially after I had teenage Conner counter kill his way through an army of redcoats for an hour. It incentivises the use of your tools, makes you consider how you should approach a combat encounter before engaging in it, and reinforces the idea that you're supposed to be an assassin. Unfortunately, the Witcher clones removed everything I liked about the series.

I'll just piggyback of this thread to talk about my AC Unity experience.
I started with Odyssey, t'was alright, then Origin. God I loved that game, being Bayak was awesome. It made me realise how much more I prefer a solid fleshed out character who's dialogue you can't influence, over Kassandra and the player dialogue and romance options.
Anyway I seriously disliked Unity at first, it took a while but it was the NotreDame mission where the game really started. It's very narrow and tutorially up until that point. I loved Paris, it was by far the most engaging setting so far. The people, the grime, the variety of missions, the helix missions in future Paris, I loved all of it. I got obsessed with Enigmas, learnt a ton about the Revolution, actually read the database entries which is unlike me, and had a grand time.
My gripes are that I never cared about the characters, and some of the QOL elements were so badly done. I'm one of the unfortunates who was forced into the DLC early in the game as I clicked the wrong fast travel button, and had to do a level 5 mission at level 2 just to exit the damn thing and get back to Paris. Very poor implementation.
So....Syndicate or Valhalla next?

But if Unity is the only older AC game you have played, you might not even notice too much. Syndicate was my first, so I'm partial to it.

One of my personal favorites is Syndicate and I played the majority of AC games at release. It did have some quirks to it, but I found using Evie whenever I had the chance it felt fairly close to most prior AC games, I found Jacob and his playstyle would have fit better with the last three games where Evie was more like the prior games.

I can see that, definitely. I do miss getting to have a prologue showing their childhood or training like we did with the earlier assassins. That is obviously something I didn't realize on my first playthrough, but it stuck out at me once I'd gone back and played the older games.

I ended up with Valhalla but that's fine, I can save Syndicate as something to look forward to in the future. Yeah Unity is my only older game and the style is quite different to the newer ones. I like it tho, I like loading into a level and seeing how many objectives there are, how many guards, entrances etc. It feels more like a proper level to get your teeth into
