Less talk and chatter about humans for once. what Elf origin do you want in Dreadwolf? Pro-Solas? Anti-Solas? Neutral bystander? Tevinter slave or even a Lost Evanuris? I honestly wouldn't mind a much older character this time - doesn't need to be a lost evanuris themselves but someone around from the Mythal/Solas time to see how accurate his claims were about the Elven Gods.

I've put slave elf as that throws up certain possibilities. For example, it was stated in Tevinter Nights that Sicarri recruits are often taken from slave families, the latter being then held as hostage against their loyalty but with the promise of freedom as well. That would throw up an interesting background and possible personal quest. Failing that, I would just opt for city elf.
I notice you don't give the specific option for Agent of the Qun, which would actually be more likely than Agent of Fen'Harel. At least an Agent of the Qun would want to stop him, whereas I can't really see how they could have a PC who was actively working for his agenda and if they had changed sides, the obvious question would be "Where is he then?"
The problem with being an ancient elf is that there is too much we ought to know about the past but won't, particularly if the player is a newbie. It could work if we had suffered from amnesia after waking from uthenera and then kept finding clues that started to restore it, although that does sound a bit too much like the plot in DAI.
With regard to the potential Sicarri PC, that could be any race or class, since they have mages in their number, which is why I have put it forward as a possibility.

I voted for Slave Elf, as I enjoy following the tale of a powerless to gradually powerful protagonist (an "underdog"), and I picture the background offering an interesting character perspective. If I play as an elf in Dreadwolf, I am actually hoping to utilize the warrior class though, and I am uncertain if that would be available to that background. So, if class restrictions were to be a thing, I would prefer a City Elf instead.

Ancient Elf waking up from Uthenera, would be an eye opening experience. Kind of like Javik, being familiar with the old world and how wonderful yet flawed it was and comparing it to modern Thedas. Giving us a chance to decide which world if worth saving. Though chances are we'll be an Elven slave and through various circumstances get our freedom and decide what we value and work with/against whomever we decide.

Ancient Elf waking up from Uthenera, would be an eye opening experience. Kind of like Javik, being familiar with the old world and how wonderful yet flawed it was and comparing it to modern Thedas. I just think that would be more appropriate for a companion than our PC. An ancient elf companion, particularly if they hadn't been a supporter of Fen'Harel in the past, would be particularly interesting as they might well have a very different perspective of our rebel "saviour". Alternatively, they were a former ally who felt betrayed by what he did, because the voices in the Vir Dirthara would seem to indicate some of them were his supporters and none too please to discover what his plan had led to. I am actually hoping to utilize the warrior class though, and I am uncertain if that would be available to that background. WoT says that whilst slaves cannot serve in the military, they can be personal soldiers or bodyguards. Look at Marius. He was trained as a specialist mage killer, no doubt intended to act as a bodyguard for an Altus who wanted something more than magical protection against their enemies. So there is definitely potential there for a warrior class slave. Also, as I say above, the Sicarri have all classes within their ranks. That is the benefit of them opting for a slave background because every class can be a slave, even a mage.

The Lackof elf origin. A little known group that's fond of questioning other elves about the cultures they claim to be from and not acting particularly elfy except when prompted. Some claim they're possessed by otherworldly entities with an unhealthy interest in pointy ears.
(This comment is tongue in cheek and I don't actually expect a humans only origin, even if it would be my preference. I don't hate elves or elfphiles, and wouldn't expect them to be cut anyway even if the devs were inclined to reduce the playable options.)

If they were an actual Origin story to play, the Arlathan Forest Dalish Elves would most likely be my pick. There's definitely some interesting stuff going on there.
But since that's unlikely to happen, I'd choose Lord of Fortune. Or some storyline path of a Dalish Elf becoming a LoF.

A slave elf rescued young by Fog Warriors and raised to badassery. As I say, there are plenty of interesting aspects they could give to a basic slave background. Once again, as with the Sicarri, you could be any race or class and rescued by the Fog Warriors. I would love to be a Fog Warrior, particularly if they gave us some unique abilities as a result. If it isn't someone we can play then I'm hoping for a Fog Warrior or Fog Dancer (their equivalent of a Dalish Keeper I think) as a companion. I favour playing elves but would happily play a human if it meant I could be a Fog Warrior. However, they have such a unique culture and history that I would rather have a companion who can expand on this in their conversations, rather than playing one with only a few brief details to guide me. Nevertheless, that was the case with new players and the Dalish in DAI, so it could be possible they do the same with a Fog Warrior in DAD (I think it highly unlikely we will be given full origins stories like DAO)

I went with slave elf, it makes more sense from a pc perspective & bw could have a lot of ambient dialogue regarding your character.
I would like to see an ancient elf in the part though, but as a party member & I'd like s/he to be one that opposed Solas in the past & keeps stating contradicting events, as to how he portrays the past, allowing the player to decide what's the truth

Wouldn't a slave be a city elf by default though?
At any rate, given the wording of the trailer "no magic hand, no ancient prophecy" I just want to be a...well, a nobody and as far as being "nobody" a slave would be considered nobody...
But I just really hope we get something like this: I don't really care about our background, I just want that outfit and the bow for my PC

I don't really care about our background, I just want that outfit and the bow for my PC I'd love that too. I've dubbed that figure the "Arcane Archer" because the bow reminds me of our light sword as Knight Enchanter and also featured for the Arcane Warrior, Cilian, in DAMP. At the very least I'm hoping we get a companion with such a kit based off the 2020 trailer: My fear is that the characters showcased in that trailer were actually going to feature in the multi-player element of DA:D that was later dropped. However, that is such a cool concept piece I hope it survived into the single player game.

speaking of concept pieces, the one I posted was released on my b-day this year, so that was a nice gift ...also it's been my desktop background ever since

I'd actually like to play as a Dalish elf and finally have a Dalish that was smart and realistic about what they have to do to preserve their future.
Almost without exception the Dalish have come off as arrogant, stupid, incompetent morons when they have a story arc in dragon age games.
I would like my Dalish character to side with solas and his goals up until a crucial time at the end and then betray him.

Agent of the Qun. I loved Tallis and her conflicts staying true to the Qun, and it would be different than playing as another Dalish or City elf that worships Andresate.

What they have to do is to stop trying to emulate the past. It is an impossible task and it only holds them back To my mind they are simply trying to maintain an identity separate from that of the human civilisation around them. What's wrong with that? I loved the declaration "We are the last of the elvhen and never again will we submit." Now it is ironic in view of what was revealed about ancient elven civilisation but they don't know that and the determination to remain free on their own terms is admirable. If the city elves had done so much better through accepting human rule, you could argue against their stance, but the fact is the opposite is true. Lavellan was a wonderful contradiction to our previous experience of how elves fair in the world but as I said to Solas after Haven, "It won't last", and it didn't. Still it was fun whilst it lasted.

It definitely takes a lot of courage. I just meant that they need to have their own version of elven tradition and not worry about how ancient elves used to do things. Lavellan's time standing at the top of the world didn't last, but it would be good to remember that s/he still is a comte/ss in Kirkwall.

but it would be good to remember that s/he still is a comte/ss in Kirkwall. Yes and if you make the right decisions, then your clan is also doing well working with humans and the Keeper is on the council of Wycombe (I think that wasn't just something I made up in my own head). Varric also supported that as Viscount of Kirkwall, so with Lavellan on hand as well, they should do okay. After all, they and their clan did save the city from being poisoned with red lyrium. It was something they didn't take away from me as an achievement during my time as Inquisitor. It also amused me to read in WoT that my clan had ended up in the fun capital of Thedas but perhaps that's why it worked out so well.

Ancient Elf. Someone who was loyal to the Evanuris and not Solas. Perhaps they've been in Uthenera for all this time until something that happens in the beginning of the game awakens them. They would probably have to suffer from partial memory loss after such a long time in slumber to explain why the player doesn't know everything about the Ancient Elves. This character would obviously have their own personal reasons to go after Solas.

I hope regardless of our origin, our race will actually impact how the world reacts to us.
Elves and Qunari should have a particularly difficult time in Tevinter, especially dealing with it's nobility, and not a '-10 points for being elfy at court' like DAI. I want to see NPCs flat out refuse to deal with us, and that should close that route of a quest and we have to find an alternative.

Elves and Qunari should have a particularly difficult time in Tevinter, especially dealing with it's nobility Whilst I would agree about Qunari for obvious reasons, I wouldn't necessarily say that is the case with elves. Okay, they can't be Altus but they tend to think they are superior to everyone who isn't them (again with certain exceptions). However, there is no particular reason why an elf who comes into magic shouldn't become a Laetans and elevate the rest of their family along with them. All that is required is that you are not a slave or Liberati (former slave) but that applies equally to humans. Even they can become eventually become citizens with the right backing, since it is possible for anyone to be adopted into another family and be regarded as part of them. This happened with Myrion in Tevinter Nights. His own family were slaves but when he came into his magic, the Soporati factory owner adopted him into his own, since that meant everyone was automatically elevated to Laetans class. Whilst Myrion was human, I can't see an ambitious Soporati passing up the opportunity to do the same thing with an elf. Unlike in the south, it would seem your place in society is entirely based on whether you are a citizen or not and whether you have magic. Once part of the Laetans class, it is even possible to rise up the pecking order and get a place in the Magisterium. Conversely, it is possible to drop down the pecking order by selling yourself or other members of your family into slavery in order to survive. That's why I think a slave background could have such promise for throwing up a variety of different starting points depending on the back story they wish to give. You could be still a slave, newly freed, elevated to citizenship or even just acquired a place in the Laetans class. Then the Qunari attack your settlement and you are back to square one or something similar. There is a lot they could do with it to give variety in your choice.

The impression I got from each game and media is that Tevinter is a bad place to be an elf, which is saying something in Thedas. While some of that may well be fearmongering from southern Thedas I'm sure there is some truth to it, and I'd hope they don't gloss over that.

The impression I got from each game and media is that Tevinter is a bad place to be an elf, which is saying something in Thedas. I don't think it is any worse than being down south and, as I say above, there is the possibility for advancement given the right circumstances. There has been a tendency to suggest that the majority of slaves in Tevinter are elves, when according to WoT it is about half and half elf and human. The majority of free elves tend to live in poverty and it is a matter of opinion if that makes you better or worse off than in the south but I never got the impression that they experience the sort of prejudice found in the south, which was very much a result of Chantry propaganda after the Exalted March on the Dales. Tevinter definitely doesn't have alienages. Of course, the Dalish are a different matter. I understood from DA2 that the Dalish don't go anywhere near Tevinter for good reason, since it is even more the evil empire in their lore than Orlais. Also, as non-citizens they would be vulnerable to slave traders. Yet, in Tevinter Nights there are clans up in Tevinter, some outside of the Arlathan Forest, so I don't know if that is a new development or not. The Tevinter squadron attacked them but since they had no rights, being effectively foreign intruders, that would probably be the case for anyone. I know comic series aren't necessarily anything to go by but in Magekiller their contact on behalf of the Archon was an elf. I can't remember if he was a Liberati or not but certainly his circumstances seemed good enough he didn't immediately leave his service when he had the chance. I suppose it could have been a similar situation to Briala but clearly not something that the Archon had to hide, so not quite the stigma about having an elf as an acknowledged valued assistant as there is in Orlais. The dodgy part about being an elf in Tevinter is their value in blood magic. Presumably it is still known as it was in ancient times that elf blood has magical properties not found in other races, making them more likely to be victims. The difference is that, unlike in ancient times, now it has to be done behind closed doors because officially it is meant to be forbidden, although in practice every Altus family knows how to do it.
