Surprisingly we don’t seem to have a general Game of Thrones thread that I could find, so I made one.
House of the Dragon Episode 1 aired last night and I thought it was great, a return to form for the glory days of Seasons 1-4 of Game of Thrones.
The character work in this one episode was fantastic, particularly for King Viserys.

Copying my post from the "What you are watching?" thread: Just watched the first episode of House of the Dragon. It was ok, nothing spectacular. Lots of blood and gore and naked people. The biggest cause for attention was trying to figure out why the guy playing Prince Daemon looked so damn familiar. I recognized the face but my brain was drawing a blank on who it was. Then I saw his name in the credits: Matt Smith from Dr. Who!

I've already seen reports of a second season confirmed, even though we've only seen 1 episode so far! The House of Dragons doesn’t really roll off the tongue like the Mouse House, but it is still plenty accurate. WB/HBO are all in on Westeros and it’s dragons at this point.

I've already seen reports of a second season confirmed, even though we've only seen 1 episode so far! I don’t have numbers on hand, but it apparently had wildly successful premier numbers. They must be confident there won’t be a drop off with the rest of the season and reception has been good. I don’t fully understand this trend of shows having seasons confirmed this early, sometimes multiple seasons, but I imagine it helps to get production up and running sooner.

I think it's a bit like the TV version of letting critics see a movie many weeks before release. It projects confidence in your product.
And - like you say - helps lock in production schedules. Working actors in Hollywood are busy.

Watched the first two episodes last night and while it's not terrible, I don't think it really captures the same level of epic scale that Game of Thrones did. Maybe it's because these two episodes make liberal use of the same 3 locations (the small council room, the king's chambers, and interior: castle hallways) that it feels very small in comparison.
The first episode of GoT was out in the countryside, giving wide vistas of the land, as well as being in the castles for close up drama. Plus, I don't know if its just me but there seems like there is a slight color filter over everything. It's most notable for scenes in the castle but it feels like the lighting quality is not as up to snuff as the first season of GoT.
All in all it feels like a cheaper version of what came before, which is odd since the cost of each episode is estimated at $20 million compared to the original series' budget of $6 million (for seasons 1-3).

Episode 2: Like any true man, Viserys chose his wife based not on politics or personality, but on how willing she is to enable his miniature hobby.
I’m hopeful the show will look better as we get to bigger set pieces, but does it look to everyone else like everything is a little desaturated? Also like half the scenes are filled with various levels of mist, clouds, and smoke.

Yeah I don't know if they are desaturating everything since it all happened "in the past" and we need that underlying theme going on but it does make the show feel like it's more cheaply made than its predecessor; like they couldn't afford proper lighting equipment. And the obfuscating of what little outdoor scenes there are isn't really helping to dispel that feeling either.

So....in other words if I don't have Crave/HBO just yet then there's no need to rush out and subscribe to it just to watch this......? To put it simply: Hard pass..?
Though my mom does want Crave in November when Season 3 of His Dark Materials comes out. So maybe I'll wait till then to catch up on everything.
However, I might just take a hard pass because GOT really sucked after Season 6. The last two seasons were horrible, and it turned me right off the franchise so much so that I don't even care to re-watch our BDs of Season 1 through 5 when it was actually an amazing show.

I actually think it’s been a huge improvement writing-wise from the latter seasons of GoT. It isn’t at the heights of early GoT (though there have been some fantastic performances), but it’s pretty good (The old showrunners aren’t at all involved thankfully) So worth watching, but maybe not worth subscribing for just that if you aren’t invested in the franchise anymore.

I think you made the right call in having this be its own thread. Tonally and structurally this show is a completely different proposition to GoT. That's not meant as either a criticism or an endorsement, just an observation. Ep 3 Good to see the Lannister family confidence was not an aberration that appeared only in Jaime, Cersei and Tyrion. Jason (sp?) is quite taken with himself.
The complete disconnect between the ruling classes and those who hold them up was never more clearly illustrated than in that poor soldier in the opening scene that was just happy to see Daemon and his dragon and ended up getting squished because lol-commoners. And in a different setting and tone, Rhaenyra riding off into the wilds and trying to outrun her Kingsguard that would very certainly have suffered consequences if anything had happened to her. They truly believe they were ordained by their gods.
Otto isn't as obviously malevolently cunning as Tywin Lannister appeared to be, but he is a player of the Game, no doubt. It takes a certain someone to instruct their 14 year old daughter to seduce a mourning king 3 or 4 times her age.
I find myself feeling for Viserys. He is clearly not a 'mad king' type, but is still bound by some pretty bleak traditions and expectations. It could not have been clearer that he didn't want to kill that stag, but went through with it because nothing says Happy Birthday 2 year old like slaughtering an animal while your soldiers hold it still for you.
Rhaenyra throws shade on Robert Baratheon. Nice.

I'm puzzled. I saw a size comparison between Drogon and Balerion. The latter is gigantic. Cool?. But comes the question. A dragon that size, what does it eat? Whales?

Episode 4 was solid. Seemed a bit like a set-up for true beginning of the story. Quality Uncle/Niece time in the brothel and slums. Was Daemon taking Rhaenyra to the mummer's play that mocked a female heir deliberate? Or just good fortune for him? He looked pleased that she was annoyed by the comedy at her expense.
Targaryen women seem to have an enduring fondness for dark haired, sad eyed boys.

That last shot of Ep. 5 with the rat was awesome. Great cinematography there.
Overall, I like the show so far. Yea, it doesn't have the scale of GoT of course but that's a good thing in a way, it sets it apart quite a bit. This one feels more like a Shakespeare play almost. I am curious where it'll be going.

Just saw it is doing bonkers numbers (in the US, anyway). E5 had viewership of 29 million, apparently. Contrasting with GoT at its peak, which was apparently 44 million.
This is...unexpected.

I was trying to wait for them to finish season 1 before I started watching, so that I could binge-watch the entire season at my leisure, but my patience ran out. Overall am enjoying the show, the contemptuous and contemptible writing that marred the last few seasons of GoT is mostly absent so that's good to see. Generally think they did a good job casting, all the main characters- Daemon, Viserys, Alicent, and Rhaenyra- are spot on so far. I'm a little nervous about Larys Strong (the Clubfoot) because they cast some skinny little weiner for the role but I'm guessing he'll be played by a different actor after the time jump so hopefully they nail that because he's one of the most interesting characters in the story, the Fire & Blood version of Littlfinger and/or Varus. A little disappointed that Corlys and Rhaenys haven't had larger roles so far. Also wish Alicent had a bit more agency in her rise to power and a more active advocate for her son to be named heir instead of Rhaenyra. Presumably that will change. Also not crazy about how the Daemon/Rhaenyra incest scene went down, having Daemon take her somewhere extremely public and then ditch her seems really stupid on his part. His goal is to marry Rhaenyra, but humiliating and angering both Viserys and Rhaenyra seems like a dumb way to go about that. Daemon obviously has his character flaws, but stupidity wasn't really one of them.

The younger of Viserys' son's (no idea what his name is) looks like a cross between GoT's Viserys (Dany's shithead brother) and Joffrey. Definitely has the attitude for it. The older brother is useless.
