A question regarding Thedas lore. I'm making a belly dancer character in my RPG so my first obvious idea was the he was going to be a rivaini character, as far as my limited knowledge of Thedas go it is the culture that would fit, a "gypsy style belly dancing" at least. But I wanted more of a middle-eastern arabian dancer and I would like to know if there is any place in Thedas that would fit it, a place with deserts if possible. Oh and either human or elf so no Qunari/Dwarf places.

To be clear, you mean Tabletop RPG, right?
There's no real analogue for Arabic nations or culture in Dragon Age. Rivain does seem like your best bet, though, if only because it's been explored so little that you can basically make up whatever you want.

Yes, I understand but since I didn't read the novels and the comics (well, I read some...) I was hoping there was something I didn't know. I was also hoping that there was some kind of civilization that live/lived in that Inquisition area of Western Approach, Hissing Wastes and Forbidden Oasis, it seems like it would be something persian/arabic/whatever... I also think Qunari have something egyptian, pyramids and stuff? So perhaps part of the qun is also "arabic" (they tend to mix influences)? I would not play a kossith/qunari but at least I could make up something in the background of the character that would justify it's "borrowed culture". Thedas is big, there are mysterious lands beyond thedas and unfortunately they spent three games in Ferelden/Orlais =( I'm sure that somewhere in their world there is an "arabia inspired people" but it seems like they don't plan on showing it anytime soon

The Pyramids of Par Vollen actually PRECEDE the qunari. They were built by the natives of the island and have been largely abandoned. Keep in mind that the Dragon Age setting is largely limited to the continent of Thedas. There definitely are lands beyond Thedas, but they've never been really explored by the Theodosians because they're either overwhelmingly hostile or extremely difficult to get to. A couple things to note about Rivain: 1) It's a matriachal society ruled over by a queen and governed by seers — hedge mages who at times allow themselves to be possessed by spirits. 2) They maintain a peaceful relationship with the qunari. Many Rivaini have converted to the Qun. The rest are nominally Andrastian, but they hold more reverence for the natural order and spirits. 3) They enjoy wearing jewelry and tattoos.

Rivain could be a good candidate. The other place to consider is the central/northern part of Seheron, an area not held by either the Qunari or Tevinter but largely in the control of native rebels. I know it is said to have jungles but if you are going for a gypsy belly-dancer type rather than a specific Arabic style one, then it could still fit. The belly dancer tradition is far more wide spread than simply the Arab world. The Romani gypsies have their origins in northern India and a lot of traditional Indian and far eastern dancing has flamboyant yet supple movements to the body. Seheron also has the native rebels known as Fog Warriors and these bands are said to always be accompanied by Fog Dancers. Whilst they remind me more of the Ghost Dancers of the Native Americans, there could be an element of sinuous, erotic dancing in their traditions as well.
Otherwise there doesn't seem to be a specific desert area that would fit the bill. The Anderfels are very arid but their cultural traditions seem to have been heavily influenced by the Chantry and southern Thedas. Most of the other known desert areas like the Western Approach and Hissing Wastes are largely uninhabited and no longer have a native culture.
You might also consider somewhere in Tevinter. Whilst the mages rule, the biggest class there are the Soporati. There is no real reason why there might not be a dance group or even tribe that specialise in belly dancing. In the south away from the coast it is likely dry and desert like, particularly in the region of the Silent Plains. So your dancer could originate from somewhere like Solas or Perivantium.

Yeah, I've been reading about Rivain this past weekendgervaise21 Avatar Nov 1, 2016 14:20:40 GMT -2 gervaise21 said: Rivain could be a good candidate. I will read more about this, specially Seheron, very useful info, thanks.
