Another match today, where I ended up being the host but the lag was so bad for me that I was shocked when we got to the lobby. Phantoms broke all of their sync rules, and I was seemingly getting one-shotted left and right. This was annoying.
It was fun to find an old thread on Fextralife, bashing on Robarcool for talking about hosting on his connection and having lag. We used to ridicule that notion, because we were a bunch of drooling idiots that couldn't comprehend how any of this works. Or, we just liked the drama... very hard to tell with the OG crowd then. There were a lot of douchebags. Anyways -
Our new GPUs like to do their own things... apparently they will happily ignore some in-game settings. Even FPS settings. And, of course, we have some tryhards and even just "monitor enthusiasts" (?) that like to play at maximum framerate, even if it is detrimental to the experience of others. Well... it is detrimental to others!
This thread, for an entirely different game, is somewhat enlightening as to what is going on. The top comment on the Steam thread is from a developer. Now, this may not be a perfectly analogous situation, but I think it might be.
Relevant portion -
The suggestion there, is to use your GPU control panel, and manually set the Max Frame Rate to 60. I also thought maybe the Background Application Max Frame Rate should be set to 60, but learned that this setting only affects the game when you have changed focus to desktop or another window. Not something that would affect game performance.
So, I have done this, and will see if it helps my on-host issues at all. I suspect if it does, it will be very minimally. Why? Because to get this to really work, everyone would have to do it. When a newer/powerful GPU is in the match and the player using it hasn't tuned things, that extra processing on their end will affect my processing of their game. Which will then also affect the processing of my game. And everyone is lagging, yay!
So, I present this thread as something to try. I also present this thread as another example of rushed development, and things to nail down further in future titles. Finally, it possibly explains why I feel like I have experienced more lag, in general, when playing this game since getting my 3070. I will report my feelings on this, it won't be super-scientific but hey, what do you expect from an expelled Jedi?

It's not lag, it's that the frames affect the simulation. Limiting to 60 fps is the right conclusion.

It's not lag, it's that the frames affect the simulation. Limiting to 60 fps is the right conclusion. Care to explain this further? It manifests in my game on-host, the same as a laggy match would. Your point may be correct, but I am not sure why you are making the distinction. We knew "frames affect the simulation" a long time ago, so that doesn't really contribute anything to the conversation. I didn't know that GPUs like to ignore in-game settings, and that more power running on its own schedule can cause issues for others, and thus this post. ... I did play a few matches since then, didn't have any host migration and didn't open a lobby. Lag/latency/whatever term you want to use - I experienced all of it. It is killing the game for me, I just don't enjoy that challenge anymore. At this point, I feel like they are trying to kill the game by making it slowly unplayable. Yes, that is a tinfoil hat you see there.

Yes, that is a tinfoil hat you see there. Lining the whole suit is more effective tbh. 5G(eth) signals are getting quite advanced. I've nothing else to offer as a PStriple scurb. I don't even know what a frame is and lag is basically a beneficial game mechanic used to make my quarksman fire a Raider 6 times
