I've finished ME2 Insanity as a Vanguard. It was tough until I got several shotgun and health/shield upgrades then i was charging and shotgunning face everywhere - I actually enjoyed it!
Now, I'm starting ME3. It seems there is a Charge/Nova build that doesn't rely on shotguns as much? And a non-nova build that is more shotgun focused? I haven't tried Nova yet really.
Also, what bonus power would u suggest? I was using Reave in ME2 - seems like it can set up biotic combos in ME3 with Charge and stuff - crazy. I know ME3's difficulty is easier due to all the combos even on Insanity - what are some builds that are fun for Vanguard in ME3?
P.S. I have read that Vanguard is OP in ME3 - honestly if its still fun i'm okay with that. Towards the end of ME2 I was unstoppable charging everywhere and I enjoyed it.

Charge + Nova build essentials: - Charge: Radius - Weapon Synergy - Barrier
- Nova: Force and Damage, Half Blast, Pierce
- Incendiary Ammo: Squad Bonus, Headshot Damage, Explosive Burst
- Assault Mastery: Damage, Weight Capacity, Shotgun Damage
Nova give you 1.5 seconds of invulnerability, so with Half Blast you can get that twice (total 3 seconds) before you lose all your shields. So with a light enough weight, Biotic Charge can be about 3-second cooldown, letting you do Charge > Nova > Nova > repeat until everyone is dead. You can also work in some shooting and do Charge > Shoot > Nova (+ reload) > Nova > repeat. This build works well with 3-4 second recharge on Biotic Charge. Bonus powers: Reave for priming and detonating biotics on anything. Fortification if you want a little extra damage protection. General-purpose charge-only build: Same as above, except swap out Nova for Pull and Shockwave. Can drop Shockwave if you want only three powers with a controller and plan to use Reave. Pull: Radius, Expose, Double Pull. Shockwave: Radius, Distance, Lift. Other builds: If you ever feel adventurous, try playing a build without Charge (Nova optional, or required if you really want adventure).

My personal fav Vanguard build for ME3 is a Cryo Combo build.
You'll need Squad Cryo Ammo and you're favorite gun. Personally I prefer the Scorpion for its accuracy and virtually guaranteed chance of freeze effect, but this build also works really well with pellet based shotguns (i.e. not the Geth Shotgun). You'll also want to get your recharge time as low as possible, which means carrying light and opting for recharge speed bonuses in Liara's room.
The premise is pretty simple: 1) Remove protection layers (Having a squadmate with some type of chain Overload) 2) Shoot a couple of rounds 3) Wait for the freeze duration to take effect 4) Charge into the fray
The cryo explosion should trigger further freeze effects on unprotected enemies nearby - if all goes well, you can repeat steps 3 and 4 back to back, just continually charging into frozen enemies and shattering them. Because cryo effects only work on unprotected enemies, I tend to target troopers and cannibals first to get the party going. If you want to play with your food, you can use Pull on a frozen enemy before targeting them with Charge, to shatter them mid-air

Thanks for the replies.
So I'm just finishing up Mars in ME3 and I'm wasting things with rank 6 charge, rank 5 nova, 5 incendiary, 4 assault mastery and 4 fitness - 1 reave. It's hyper-active and i'm zooming around everywhere - i feel OP and I just started. I haven't run into any super tough enemies - the Guardians so far are the hardest with their shield. Usually I can have Liara drop a singularity and that gets them off their feet - and I just charge for an explosion. So far, it's fun but I worry it might feel less satisfying than using your brain for encounters. I kind of want to see the Vanguard playstyle through since it's so unique but I literally just wasted a tougher group of mobs right before you meet Dr. Eva and barely needed any help from my companions - unlike other classes/playthroughs. I'm a one-stop wrecking machine. After playing the series many times and needing help from companions - at least on insanity - it feels even easier than other playthroughs. I do feel powerful, though. Maybe a bit too much...
I'll keep going with this charge, nova, shotgun face style, nova - rinse, repeat for now but it might get a little too one-trick-pony. That being said, I did enjoy doing it in ME2 but it only became fun when I got enough shield and shotgun upgrades - was very hard for the first 30% of the game or so. And I just started ME3 and its relatively easy already...

Yeah I feel you - now you see how ridiculously OP a Charge+Nova Vanguard really is in ME3. There maybe a couple of levels where it's less of a cake walk, especially where you find multiples of Geth Primes', Atlas', Banshees or Brutes, but overall it can get repetitive because of how easy it is to spam. Glad you tried it though!
If you're looking for another challenge there's a Shockwave + Nova Vanguard that feels, at least to me, more similar to the ME2 Vanguard playstyle.
You'll want: - Detonating and Lifting Shockwave - Any Nova tree
The premise is to remove protections, get as close as you can to hit a cluster of enemies with Shockwave - then use Nova on the lifted enemies for a biotic explosion.
This is a more challenging playstyle because you have to manage your range and timing. You need to get close enough to hit enemies with Shockwave AND be able to hit them within the radius of Nova for the combo AND be able to hit them while they're primed within the really short lift window of Rank 6 Lift Shockwave.
It's a much more vulnerable playstyle that requires more strategic planning due to the lack of invulnerability and shield replenish - you might enjoy this if you feel like switching it up
