I was just wondering why is that such a popular stance among players.
Think about it. Being the Inquisitor opens up the possibility to create whatever change s/he would like to see in the world. The organization can do a lot more good than just defeating Corypheus.
Well, the Inquisitor might not be that altruistic, but then again, this position can serve one's selfish ends just the same.
With that in mind, I don't understand why is it that ever since the game was released, the fandom has always said "My Inquisitor never wanted the role". Is it because of the Herald of Andraste thing?

Is it... is it because of the Herald of Andraste thing? I htink i tdepends on the Inquisitor though as most of my human ones especiall ym ymage ones are happyt otake the role as a means to elevate their position in society much like Vivienne managed to do. My mage ones fo rthe most part never comeout and sa yit though as they realise how t ogame the system and the best wayt od othat is to make subtle moves without drawing attention. A lot of my elven ones though don't caer much for Andraste but recognised this as an opportunity to put elves back on the map and back in positions of power where the ycould suich as wit hBriala. Th eQunari ones I've played for the most part couldn't really caew lessbut recognis ethe need to restore order. The one dwarf I've played wa very muc hthe same as my Qunar iones tbh.

Yeah, I am not your silly religions anything. I was alienage refuse yesterday, now you want to bring me flowers as your holy pointy-eared Inquisitor? Naw, I'm good.
My first Inq was human male, and was fine being the Inquisitor, but again felt uncomfortable with being called HoA, because my first playthrough of any game is a hard self-insert RP. I don't believe in deity, at least not in the way of the Chantry and the Maker; that sort of benevolent mythos doesn't work for me personally and therefore my Inq also frowns on it.
So, you need to separate the two predicates in your question. Which role are you asking about? The HoA, or the Inqy?
If Inqy, I agree that is a mystery. If HoA, that seems obvious to me - a devout person might feel honored, but would not feel right claiming to be anything they weren't. The rest are more "wut?"

Is it because of the Herald of Andraste thing?Basically, yes. For my Dalish Inquisitor, it was horrible to be made the figurehead of the religion that persecutes her faith and people. It didn't matter what she said or did, people would just change it to fit their Andrastian narrative. People associated her good actions and hard work with the Maker. For my Adaar, his success meant validating and empowering a religion he didn't like and which tried to opress his kind (mages) Basically, they knew they were strengthening the public perception of Andrastism as a result of their hard work to stop Corypheus. They were also both aware that if things went south, they'd be scapegoated for heresy which would lead to things becoming harder, even bloodier, for their people. In both cases, they resolved to make the best of the situation by trying to improve things for their people. For example, my Adaar leaned into people seeing him as a general stand-in for qunari in general by emphasizing that he was qunari when possible (ex. "I'm a qunari standing for Thedas.") They also outright sabotage certain orders (ex. Templars/Disband the seekers) to make things easier for their people (Dalish/free mages)
