The companions' subplots felt more important in DA2.

In both DAO and DAI, we're fed information about the companions until we finally get The Big Quest where their personal struggle is both revealed and resolved.

And it is done.

In DA2, their individual storylines are an ongoing development through the whole game. And on screen, not just dialogue.
