I have never played a Witcher game in my life, however I do own all three games on Steam.
I think it's about time I started playing them, but every single person I mention it to immediately says: "Nooooo don't play 1, it makes Atari ET, Ride to Hell retribution, and Big Rigs Over the Road Racing' look like absolute flawless paragons of gaming perfection in comparison, I would rather suck the exhaust pipe of a Semi then play The Witcher 1"
But from the bit I've read about it, I don't think it looks that bad - in fact it might even be the kind of game I actually enjoy. I don't mind backtracking and running around from place-to-place at all. I don't mind the slightly dated graphics - in any case there are mods for that kind of thing. I've read the voice acting is pretty bad, but meh! I can live with that as long as the core gameplay is enjoyable.
What puts me off is the possibility that the game might be one of those super-complex kind of games that require a degree in stat management to work out how to get a half-decent build. I'm not very good at the kind of super-fast combat that requires superb twitch reflexes, speed and and pinpoint accuracy either - not sure if it's like that?
As for The Witcher 2. I'm given to understand that it's one of those 'death by QTE' kind of affairs. Absolutely stuffed to the brim with insta-kill quick time events for almost every major encounter. Is it really that bad? I'm not a fan of QTEs at all.
Obviously I want to play TW3 - but before I do so I'd like to get the 'full story' and play the first two games beforehand.
So, anyone play these two and enjoy them? If so what kind of tips can you give to a total newbie?

I recommend playing them. Witcher 1 was developed on BioWare's aurora engine, and it looks it, primary with character models, but the rest of the game looks fine. Gameplay wise Witcher 1 is more of a rhythm game than anything, where you have to properly time mouse clicks for best results, its not the most engaging, but I don't mind it. I just play on easy, and I don't bother with alchemy at all. Magic is pretty basic in these games, you are probably just going to alternate between your wind and fire skills most of the time. Witcher 1's biggest detractor is probably poor map design with a lot a back and forth quest design, but if you stick with it, it is a really enjoyable game in my opinion, I quite enjoyed the story and setting, more than a few people hold it in higher regard than the Witcher 2.
To be honest, I don't recall there being too many QTE's in TW2, when I think gameplay annoyance, I think of the Kayran boss fight that has a seemingly intentional obtuse and counter intuitive solution. Again I play Witcher 2 on easy and don't bother with alchemy. Witcher 2 is a hack and slash, with broken hit boxes that would probably drive someone insane on higher difficulty, but on easy I don't have any trouble. None of these games are overly stat based, they're fairly simplistic, Witcher trilogy and Mass Effect trilogy have a lot in common in many ways. Story wise Witcher 2 is in the Obsidian mold where it reaches so high, but execution isn't quite there. Haha. Personally I'm willing to look past some plot holes/contrivances because if you can what's here is really good, and feels right at home within Sapkowski's Witcher.

Played each at release and enjoyed all of them. Blast Processor already made most of the points I would have made as well. W1 is clunky, ugly and at times rather ridiculous but stick with it and it has some really nice story elements going for it (one of the best "detective" chapters in games I've seen for example). W2 was a huge step fp CDPR. I think it still looks good today, I enjoy the combat system and the story is great if you don't mind reading all the background codex entries and such. Otherwise, you may have a hard time understanding all the politics that are involved. It's quite complicated and required you to dive quite a bit into the lore of the world. You do that though and you get a really great game. Also, if you are planning to play W3 at some point, having played 1 and 2 will make it much more enjoyable I'd think (I don't have the direct viewpoint of not knowing W1 and 2 of course but Geralt's motives and attitudes as well as the political situation you have to deal with in 3 are much more relatable and understandable if you went through 1 and 2 with him. You'll also meet a lot of characters that will already be established as friends/enemies, so if you know 1 and 2, the journey in 3 will feel much more personal. Just be aware that there is a little bit of a disconnect between 1 and 2 as CDPR gave some characters a bit of a redesign in between those two games. And despite the fact that you have a save import from 1 to 2, quite a few of your decisions will not carry over (most notably, you romance option will default to one character in 2, regardless of whom you chose in 1). But either way, it's worth it going through them.

Interesting, and thank you. I've never played a 'rhythm game' in my entire life, but to the best of my knowledge you have to follow a beat when it comes to combat, timing your attacks to the drum groove or whatever - I'm thinking that TW1 isn't actually like that and you had something else in mind when you made the comparison.
As for difficulty I almost always start games I'm a complete newbie at on easy- at least initially, and if I find that there's no challenge at all I'll up the difficulty accordingly.
One final question then: Is it a good idea to read The Witcher novels before beginning to get a better idea of the world and back story?

Oh, I meant what said. You must have missed the scandal at launch, everyone bought there plastic drums and guitars, only to find out there was no controller support. Nearly sunk CDPR right there. Jokes aside, yes, I didn't mean that it is an actual rhythm game, just that there is a rhythm to the sword gameplay. It's a very simple system.
I enjoyed the books, and I notice things I didn't before, but overall they aren't necessary to understand the world.

I own TW1 - because it was free on GoG - but haven’t played it.
I liked TW2 well enough. I think I have about 90 hours in it for two completed runs. I don’t really care for the combat and I really don’t care for the inventory system, but is an impressive game given when it released.
TW3 is one of the all time greats, in my opinion. The combat is recognisable from the 2nd game, but with enough evolution to be fun and accessible, rather than a pain in the ass. Geralt is much easier to like - if that matters to you - than in 2, and with Blood and Wine, they have one of the best, maybe even the best send off for a fictional character that I can remember. Certainly the best in my experience with games.

Played each at release and enjoyed all of them. I too played them on release, but my account of the W1 is different. At launch it was a horrible buggy mess. It has taken them more than a year to release a stable W1 game. They went as far as to re-record tens of thousands of voice acted lines in various languages, because these were horrible too. What was astonishing was that CDPR kept the game alive and didn't abandon it. At the end they released an extended edition, free of charge for those who bought the initial game. They also removed the horrible copy protection. That development didn't hurt CDPR. In fact, at the time few other game developers were treating their customers with respect, by listening to them and act on it. That gave the company legendary status. And to the OP: Play the game. It is hard to get into and some of the humor is juvenile, but stick to it. It is a good, but clunky, game.

Although I didn't have that many problems with the release version, the enhanced edition was a massive improvement. I kinda hadn't mention it because it's the only version anyone will get to see today anyway but yeah, the release of both Witcher 1 and 2 were quite messy and both got improved substantially with their respective EEs.
ergates as for the books, I didn't read any of the Witcher books until 2 years ago. They are definitely not needed to play the games, although if you did, you'd of course have quite a bit more background on the world. If you didn't though, just read all the in-game material and you'll have no problems catching up. And it actually makes sense to not have read the books because Geralt has amnesia at the beginning of Witcher 1, so as a player you get to discover the world and the people he knows and has known together with him.

I never read the Witcher stuff, but played the games with no issue. It's a double edged sword I hear. You don't recognize character cameos and miss their extra detailed backstory, but you also don't get annoyed by some lore retcons that the games apparently have. The combat in W1 is not really a rhythm one like in musical games. You have 3 combat styles that excel in different conditions. And you don't mash the clicks, but wait for Geralt to do his combo before timing your next click at the end of it.

Regarding TW1, yes, the graphics aren't great by today's standards, and the story is probably the weakest of the trilogy, but it's still a pretty decent game, and I didn't feel like I had to spend a ton of time working on stats and items (and I *do* bother with alchemy). As for back-and-forth quests, I can think of other games that wasted a lot more of my time on boring sidequests than TW1 did, including a couple from Bioware (DAI and MEA). The one other thing that feels kind of "off" is that when an NPC runs out of things to say, they may cycle back and repeat an earlier line, as opposed to games where dialogue flows a little more naturally. One character in particular will warn you that "THE WATER LORDS ARE NIGH" over and over if you exhaust all her dialogue choices.
TW2 is an improvement in gameplay and concept, though it may leave you confused if you don't know the Witcherverse's backstory. (I certainly didn't know what the hell was going on by the end of my first playthrough.) I'd advise either paying close attention to the codex entries or look for a lore guide that doesn't spoil too much of the game. And the immediate context is usually clear enough to let you understand the implications of whatever choices you make as Geralt.
TW3 deserves all the accolades it's received. The one thing I'd warn new players about is that you might end up choosing the romance with either Yennefer or Triss before you even cross paths with the other, and I'm not sure there's a way to change your mind later.

I played the Witcher series for the first time last year and I love this series. Witcher 1 is rough and it's my least favorite, but it's good because of the in game codex which has a ton of Witcher lore. The Witcher 2 in my opinion is great not only are the graphics vastly improved but the combat is better in my opinion. The only thing I don't like is resting in order to drink a potion. You have to do a bit of metagaming and know what bosses you'll be facing ahead of time and prepare. The Witcher 3 what can I say in my opinion it is the greatest open world rpg of all time, and this is coming from a huge Morrowind fan. The graphics are vastly improved. The combat is pretty much the same as the second game. If you never read any of the books some things may fly over your head like me. For example there are npc's you meet in the game that are from the books. But like I said there is an in game codex which has detailed profile so you won't be lost. Also I forgot to mention the music in all three games is great and so is the voice acting. Geralt sounds like Solid Snake from the Metal Game series, but he is not the same voice actor. Anyway I can go on and on about how great TW3 is but I'll stop here. OH! The dlc's are great. I recommend you buy the game through GOG.com. The site is own by the developers of the Witcher series so you can support the company. Here's the link: www.gog.com/en/game/the_witcher_3_wild_hunt_game_of_the_year_editionI would wait for a sale since the game is on sale regularly.

Only you can answer. I did only play TW3. TW1 I stopped during prologue when I found no chest to dump inventory and after enemies spawned way behind and killed the escort target. TW2 I had twice trouble with QT events, once I repeated a dozen times until I looked up how to do it. I stopped at the endfight for 1st act at bossfight in a tiny room I just couldnt win.

Yea, that fight in the 1st act is the most annoying in the entire game. It's quite sad. I know quite a few people who quit the game there and then and it's a shame because this really is by far the worst moment of gameplay.
As for Witcher 1, you do get access to a storage chest after the prologue but yeah, don't expect to loot huge numbers of weapons or anything like that. It's just not part of that game.

OK I'm convinced, and in fact I've bought the complete series of Witcher novels. I'm going to be starting on the first one probably around next month, as I have other books to complete first.
After that I'll fire up TW:1 and see how I go.

Personally, I was kind of disappointed by the books. Not sure if it's the translation but I didn't think they were that well written and the story telling is neither here nor there IMO.
I think the games (especially 2 and 3) are superior to the books. This is just my opinion of course, I know the books have their own fanbase but I wanted to mention it because I'd say, if you start with the books and find you don't enjoy them that much, consider still giving the games a try.
Of course I do hope you'll just enjoy all of it.
