I've been trying to adjust settings for about a week, and I really can't get anything close to a good picture out of the TV.
I tried looking on the internet, but the model I have is never the one people talk about, and none of the settings match the available numbers. To explain that further, everyone recommends settings from 0-100, but this TV's settings don't work like that, which each having a unique set of numbers (sometimes -10 to 10, sometimes 0-20 or 0-50.)
By default everything is very washed out. This problem seems to persist across all settings until everything is too dark to see. I haven't been able to find a middle ground where the brightness is "normal." I don't know how to explain it because I've never really had this problem before.
The issues seem to mostly have to do with Contrast, Brightness, Backlight, Picture Mode and a special "high contrast setting" that I don't understand called "Contrast Enhancer."
I don't know if it's even possible to give me advice that would make sense, under the circumstances, but I'm a bit desperate, so any help is appreciated.

I won;t be of much help other than to say i also have samsung smart tv but have never had poor contrast or washout. If I recall on mine there were some base choices to make outside of the individual settings that made a difference. (As in options for gaming or movies etc.)
You do have a high definition cable box correct?

can't get anything close to a good picture out of the TV. I recently battled with a Samsung smart TV, and it was a pain to get the settings right. You would think that was easy, but alas no; they were hidden in four different places and poorly named. Not sure if my advice applies, but what I did was, I disabled every possible picture "enhancement" setting I could find. After that I could make sense of contrast and brightness. I don't know how to explain it because I've never really had this problem before. Yup, it was a first one for me too. Whatever I did, the automation seemed to foil it, the picture was all over the place. You probably want to disable this, and set the backlight to a maximum value. Then set the contrast and brightness to your liking. Hope this helps.

I mostly solved the issue when I found out that my model is an obscure update to an existing one that, for some reason, changed the names of some of the settings and changed the number range of the rest. I was able to cobble some settings together that seem to have solved 90% of the problem (turning off the special contrast setting and jacking the standard contrast setting to max did most of the heavy lifting.)

I still have some details to hammer out, but the image is much better than it was.
