After Alan Wake 2 Starfield is the next big game which doesn´t have a physical disc. Unlike Alan Wake 2 its even worse you buy an empty case with a download code. I know this isn´t a topic for PC players who will argue what´s the big deal is but i hope that atleast the PS5 gets a physical disc of Dreadwolf. Yeah a complete version with all DLCs like in the good old days would also be (more?) awesome but i really don´t want to download the whole Dreadwolf. Also for love of god please no Code in the Box nonsense.

Considering online support for games dies inside 5-10 years, I would also want a physical disk so I can play. There is already a lot of people concerned they'll kill DA keep and then all we get to play DAI with are the three origin worlds they set it up with by default. None of which reflect my DAO nad DA2 choices by a long shot

I’m guessing not. That just seems to be how the whole industry is trending now.
I don’t actually own any discs for my PC games, now most of my console games.

I am on PC, and the last physical game I bought was DA2 in early 2011. I have bought off EA Origin or Steam ever since (and one game on GOG), and all 30+ of these games are still playable. Why does a physical disc matter on Console?
My youngest son owns several Consoles, and he says that he rarely buys physical copies. The primary exception for him is collector editions, and his secondary exception is speedrunning a game and not having the latest patch to allow exploiting bugs for faster playthroughs.

Andromeda had no disc, atleast not the PC version, so I'm guessing it will be the same for DAD. I already mentioned this in my opening post. This topic is of course not relevant for PC Players because there is almost no physical PC Retail market anymore. Why does a physical disc matter on Console? I can only speak for myself but first it´s nice to have some physical at shelves to look at. Second and a pretty big one Licenses. Let´s say i want to play Deadpool (or any other delisted game) but i have missed the moment to buy it. I still can buy on secondary market a used (or even new) copy of Deadpool. On Steam almost impossible. Maybe some Keyseller have codes but that´s highly unlikely the more the years go by. By the way i have also countless games on GoG, Steam and Epic but i prefer physical games. Even so crazy to buy pretty expensive physical games. But not that crazy to buy most of the Collectors Edition out there.

That first tweet was deleted. Bethesda released another tweet saying Starfield will be selling disc versions. It’s just the Constellation Edition won’t have one but just a digital code.

1. Internet connection speeds may not be up to par in some areas making it tedious to download. 2. Now while I do occasionally buy digital it's only for games I wouldn't mind loosing. Because over in the land of TV streaming companies are canceling and removing entire shows from streaming. I know not one to one but just imagine that a company saves money/ room on their servers by getting rid of some games. So if you don't have them downloaded, they're gone.

I know this isn´t a topic for PC players The hell it isn't, I haven't been able to get a physical copy of a pc game in years and I'm pissed off about it. Owning a digital copy isn't owning, it's renting, they can take it away from me at any time, i want a physical copy that i can install from without needing any online storefront that will inevitably cease to exist or drop the game to save the company money. I get them valueing digital copies, they get more money without needing to make physical discs and ship them, but Jesus they could atleast have physical discs within the collectors editions, which are already filled with physical goods they're shipping out anyway. Digital is all very well when I'm trying out other games but for my favourites i want a physical copy dammit.

When it comes to movies/ TV shows I basically stream everything these days or buy it on digital due to not having enough room for all the discs (probably) or not having the money to really splurge on a lot of movies and TV shows. For books haven't bought a book in awhile but everything gets jammed onto my kindle (should look into a replacement for that) for some of the same reasons... And well games are also my go too entertainment and way to relax every day so I guess games are just more important to me. So loosing access to my digital books will be super annoying...but being able to gurantee I have physical copies of the games I really want...like Dragon Age...is a must.

The way things have been trending, I do wonder if this will be the last console generation to have physical discs for new games.
I've no doubt you'll still be able to buy one separately to support the prior-gen games, but it wouldn't surprise me if they went all-digital going forward.

I know I'm not the typical consumer, but I don't engage in any form of entertainment media that has no physical component. I own all of my music albums on CD, all films or TV shows that I like on DVD or Blu-Ray, all video games that I play are with an inserted disc, and I own a massive collection of paperback and hardcover books. I will stream shows or movies, but only if I have verified that I can purchase a physical copy if I like it. This hard rule has led to some disappointments in the area of recreation (I haven't listened to the last three or four album by one of my favorite musicians because she stopped pressing discs, and I just found out that Baldur's Gate 3 won't be physical-not even the expensive collector's edition which I thought might come to my rescue), but I have no inclination towards changing my position.
Barring my potentially unusual tactile interaction with books (I will occasionally flip all the pages in fast sequence and smell the paper...), I just like being able to have ownership of a copy. The only way my copies become unavailable would be due to a natural disaster. I don't have to worry about a company's financial outlook, server stability, server security, licensing contracts, or content whims. If I happen to live another forty years, I could choose to pay Disney + (if the service even exists that long...hypothetical thought exercise assuming current service doesn't change) $5280 to watch Frozen, or I could buy a copy for $20 and not need that internet connection to play the movie. Of course, I can see why the company would be salivating over the difference, but I have no desire to try to possess intangible goods.
So, I DEFINITELY would prefer a disc-based version of the next installment of my favorite video game franchise.

Years ago when I had finished ordering all the parts for a new PC, I suddenly realized that buying a disk drive had never even once crossed my mind.
I’ve thought about getting an xbox + game pass to try out games and then buy only the ones I’d really, really like to replay.
Most games I have on steam are one-and-done. I appreciate not having to find the space or someone to give them to (I HATE just throwing stuff out). If I really like a game it would be nice to get a physical copy, just in case, but usually I’m too used to digital (for PC).
Funnily enough, I only recently got into buying digital games for consoles. So far it’s only been for the Switch, because they had some nice sales. Currently contemplating getting a ps5 and if it wasn’t for backwards compatibility, I might have opted for saving money and getting a Digital edition.

I was really disappointed when I ordered Pillars of Eternity and whilst the box contained a disc, I had to create a Steam account and then use the box code to download the actual game from there. Sadly, the days when you could play the entire game from the discs that came in the box seem long gone. I suppose this is intended to avoid piracy or something but it is frustrating.

The hell it isn't, I haven't been able to get a physical copy of a pc game in years and I'm pissed off about it. I believe that we will could have physical discs if the PC Industry had made the Blu Ray its standard. But they didn´t. The last major one for change would have been GTA 5. But instead going with a Blu Ray the PC Port has 7 DVD Discs. And yeah i can understand that you can´t release a game with over 10 DVD Discs nowadays.

I don't want to 'rent' my games and then have them pulled because of some copyright nonsense, bean-counting shenanigans or cultural/political related reasons.
Plus, Remaster and Remix editions often lead to the original games being delisted which can be BAD as seen with GTA Definite Edition.

I doubt EA will go to digital only for console until the market is almost completely digital by consumer choice. Dragon Age: Inquisition was available on PC with a physical disk in the box. At that point in time physical purchases were almost non-existent by customer choice.
What I do see is the Collector's Editions will be harmonized so there won't be a disk so anyone on any platform can buy a single SKU for the Collector's Edition so they don't run into a problem that someone on one platform cannot get one, but there is availability on other platforms. Going by Andromeda as well those are probably going to have limited retailers for purchase, I think Andromeda you could only buy from the BioWare store much like other developers who have taken that route selling it only on their storefronts. With those versions you didn't even get a digital code for the game and there was a lot of uproar over that for people still had to buy a copy of the game on top of the Collector's Edition bonuses.

Aren't we getting to the point where the content simply doesn't fit? Do people want to go back to the days of installing from several disks (as admittedly used to be the case)?

I don't have a problem with installing from multiple disks but I do agree that it is likely not workable anymore. I still have my case with 4 discs for Baldurs Gate 2, now 23 years old, and DAI, approaching 9 years old, the latter probably on the edge of what was feasible when it came out. I don't mind so much if I can just download it and then not have to worry about going on-line again but if I have to log in every time to play, that is where it gets annoying.

I still have my case with 4 discs for Baldurs Gate 2 And I think Baldur's Gate was 5 (or 6?). That might have been with the Sword Coast, I might have bought it twice over time. I like that a digital game just works (on console) and I don't have to look for the disk.
