So, our forum is in "speculation mode": When are we going to get release dates on the next DA and ME game? How much of the previous iterations of these games is going to impact the new ones? This question has me raising another - does it even matter? How often have I jumped into a game franchise and played every game in it? Apparently never. Here are some examples, including my personal bias/opinion. As far as ME and DA goes, these are not listed. I played ME1 and DA1 back when they were "just" ME and DA and was hooked from the start. The Witcher 3: Raised the bar in character interaction and world building but it hasn't been enough for me to visit 1 and 2 or read the books. Maybe some day. Fallout 3, New Vegas, Fallout 4: Loved F3 and NV, hated F4. Too much structure in F4. I just want to kill super mutants and raiders. Don't have time to babysit settlements, doing the same quest over and over again. As far as I know, both F1 and F2 received critical acclaim but once again, I haven't played these games. Skyrim: Would have been a 10/10 if it wasn't so buggy. Massive modding community keeping it alive to this day. Have I played TES 1-4? Nope. Baldurs Gate 3 is here and has gotten my attention. If I like it, will I get 1 and 2? Another franchise in the maybe category. Final Fantasy: Where are we at now. 16? 17? That doesn't seem realistic. There you go, something systemic in my gaming "career". Am I blundering about blindly, missing some of the best gaming experiences ever? Am I the outlier or have you done the same? Would it even matter if we are in Tevinter, the Milky Way or Andromeda? If you were in diapers when ME1 was released or an old fart like me, do you even remember? Just some questions to pass the time

I haven't gone back often, as far as I can remember but this is also because my "gaming carreer" started in the early 90s, so i have played most long running series that interest me from the early times.
I tried to go back in some cases (I remember trying to play Might & Magic 3/4/5 after playing 6) but usually I couldn't get into it and ended up quitting after a few hours. Another example is the TES series, I started with Morrowind. Loved it and every TES game since but I tried Daggerfall a couple of times and never got very far.
One of the few exceptions is Star Wars, the Jedi Knight series. My first one was Jedi Outcast but at some point I did play Dark Forces, Jedi Knight 1 and the Add-On. Not sure I would really recommend them today though.
In my experience, in many cases, going back is tough to do if you don't have a strong connection to the original. For example, I still sometimes will replay classics from the 90s but it's usually games that I already played back then and that I have some sort of connection to. It's more about reliving the old experience than the actual game. Just playing anything seriously "retro" is not my thing at all, not for old games and also not for today's retro-indie titles.

Yea h I don' tgo back often I still mpick up som eof m yold classics from my library lik eStar Trek Elite Force or Bridge Commander or occasionall yth eold Doom games. But any time spent outside o fm ycomfort games is working through my Steam backlo gand such these days. Yeah unless it's a game that used t obe one of you rfavourites and tha tyo ugre wup playing o rreally enjoyed it's goin t obe hard to go back. The E;lite Forc eand Bridge commander games fo rexampl ewere among m yfavourites before I discovered Mass Effect and Dragon Age so I htink I'd always have a soft spot for those games.

Not really come to think of it.
Mind you, with my shoddy hardware for the past several years I've been playing mostly older games. TBF I might play em anyways. I love HoMM5, Master of Orion 2/CotS, XCOM:EW, Baldur's Gates 1/2, Total War: Medieval 2, and just picked up KotOR on my iPad that I keep meaning to replay. Haven't touched that since it released.
But have I played something new then gone back and replayed the older stuff? Nope. Nothing I can think of. Good question.
