Thank you, you are the first person to tell me it's not me but the ship. Yeah, I'll also add to the chorus that the starter ship is trash. I decided to punch above my weight class and pick up the Razorleaf from the Mantis sidequest (which I've upgraded further), but I'm already eyeing building my own ship. It didn't hurt that I started with the Bounty Hunter background and some ship skills from get-go. But yeah - upgrade your ship/systems asap. Was that from the Mantis mission? I am only level 8 but have not found the combat to be too hard at all (famous last words) so was going to give that a try rather than fiddling with upgrading the starter ship. Question is can you pilot if you haven't finished the first pilot skill level? If not can you recommend somewhere I can go or a mission that is easy or at the right level to get some kills?

OK so I am not planning right away to fiddle with Upgrading the Frontier but it will be the case if I cannot complete The Mantis mission given I am pretty low level for it.
So can someone give me some tips as to what to prioritize, anything that helps me survive is probably a good start but again this is not a thing I have done before so.....
Fire away with ship upgrading stuff, assuming I can only buy stuff at the kiosk at this stage, no crafting.

Just in the middle of setting up my first base on the moon of Andraphon. Managed to find a spot that had Helium-3, Aluminum, Beryllium, and Europium (rare). I've set up a landing pad and I'm just starting to think about a proper base. I'm also on the sun-lit side, so solar panels are a go. I'll set up another spot on the moon to mine Iron. All my hoarding is starting to pay off! I also swiped this Eclipse ship. Not sure what I'll do with it (maybe use it as a starter platform to build a proper B-Class vessel). Also... this.

Where are you guys getting all these ship hijack options, I have had one on the moon and as soon as I killed the guys on the ground the ship took off!!!! When I see a ship land near me on whatever planet, I head for the location. A couple of times the ship left before I could do anything. The other thing is if you encounter pirates at some location, look around for their ship.

I like high-damage, precision weapons to place headshots. I had a tricked out Assassin's Refined Maelstrom, a tricked out Riot Shotgun, and I believe a modded AA-99. Be sure to carefully check out the gear they drop as you'll likely score big in this Level 30-35 outpost.

Fire away with ship upgrading stuff, assuming I can only buy stuff at the kiosk at this stage, no crafting. Just a few things I found helpful... - You don't need to go deep into Combat skills. Good Armor & Weapons will carry you through. If you go to the Research Station and learn what you can, you can even make some basic upgrades to them without having to go into those skill trees. - Go deep into Security. The best gear is often behind locked doors. - Prioritize Piloting & Diplomacy as well. Don't sleep on Diplomacy, it's highly valuable in getting the best outcomes in certain missions. - Get at least 1 Rank in Boost Packs, Targeting Control Systems, and Stealth (so you get a Stealth Meter). - I've also just started getting into Starship Design, but I don't know it's full value yet. - Once you get into scanning planets properly, then Surveying & Scanning become more valuable.

I did the same, but then I got blown up and when I reloaded, I met the person who owned the ship, along with her pet something-or-other, so was glad I didn't end up stealing it after all.
I think this shop on the Citadel, I mean, New Atlantis, allows you to change your appearance. I didn't try it out since I didn't want to spend the 500 credits. On the planet I was surveying, there is a third biome which I can't locate with the basic planet scan. I think I need the scanning ability in order for it to show up. That must be where the final 2 critters are hiding. These guys reminded me of the gas bags on Eden Prime:
Has anyone else noticed that photos saved in the photo gallery get used as loading screens?
Last thing for today: rescued Barrett from the Crimson Fleet - again! I had Sarah with me so she paid a ransom for him. There was also a Persuade option but I didn't use it.

Okay, it's pretty basic right now, but I've got the base up and running. Assigned Lin & Heller (though it feels more like punishment, than promotion). And I'm not sure what they're gonna do there, but... they're there.

Fire away with ship upgrading stuff, assuming I can only buy stuff at the kiosk at this stage, no crafting. Sure, I played around with the ship builder a lot lol so I think I can think of a few tips. 1. Your reactor is going to be the most important thing you want to focus on. Because it's what powers the entire ship. The better your reactor the less power switching you'll have to do on the fly in battle. 2. When it comes to weapons, particle weapons are a good choice. Especially when paired with a good set of missiles. Quick firing weapons, though not as far reaching as missiles, you'll always have a button to spam in between your missile shots. Plus they do damage to both hull and shields. 3. Read the actual abilities of everything. Just because it a class "B" module or cost more. Doesn't mean it's necessary better. I unlocked the ability to get class B parts, though the best reactor I can find is a class A. It has 20 power were as the best class B reactor I can find only gives 18. Those are a few I can think of right on top of my head. But the best thing to take away is just to have fun and experiment. Nothing is final until you leave the ship builder menu, and confirm the changes. So pick parts and just click them together to see if anything stick. The hardest part I think was just figuring out what the error messages mean. Other than that, I think it's an enjoyable process.

Prices are fixed, should be similar everywhere. Zero changes for quantity. If you want better sell/buy prices, you need to invest in the commerce skill. So far, this is my least favorite design decision. And one of the weirdest. Merchant starships have been a staple of the genre since Traveller. And somehow Starfield's economy design makes them impossible. I wonder how this didn't come up in the earliest design docs.

I just did a cool mission for the bartender on Gagarin. Was on a ship where the systems malfunctioned and the artificial gravity turned on and off every 15 seconds. This was also my first zero-G fight. Very cool how all the stuff starts floating and then falls down again. Looks great, feels great, they really did well with the zero-G stuff.
Also finished the Vanguard flight simulator finally. I managed to finish tier 5 without any help but for tier 6 I needed all the debug stuff including the hacking (for 2 allies). But it's done and I am now the champ of the recruits.

Thanks to those that made suggestions above in a rush so no direct replies. Spent pretty much all my time getting the Mantis, it was worth the effort plus the good loot I picked up along the way but couldn't pick all the locks on door and storage. I also cleared a nearby abandoned mining place. Flew to some guys farm and said I'd help him but peaked at the Walkthrough and ship fighting so headed back to New Atlantis to upgrade the ship. Why are shields the only thing you cannot seem to upgrade?? I visited NMM it was a sort of mistake as I feel guilty. Changed the weight I can carry to LOTS and boosted my XP to help with the fight at the Mantis Lair which levelled me up to L15 I think. So got some more skill points.

So after going and getting the Mantis I decided (temporarily) to do some exploring and what it highlighted is I really have no idea what I am doing and what to do. I have been inspired by others who have just gone off and started exploring and setting up settlements etc. but if I am being honest I think I am just overwhelmed by the game. So I have heaps of missions in my journal and today I did some jumping around to places and scanning them but I think I am going to return to just following the main quest for the time being as I am hopeful it will give me some more training in everything. I also hope it will open up the map more etc. Does anyone have any suggestions re their approach to the game other than following the main quest line? I seriously considered stopping playing today purely through a sense of what the hell am I doing. For the record I jumped back into the system to do the space combat mission I had failed previously and did worse with the Mantis than I did with the Frontier. I must admit my heart was not in it and I did it accidentally. So after that returned to New Atlantis to upgrade my ship and had very little idea what I was doing TBH, it just really doesn't seem very obvious or intuitive. Maybe I am just getting too old for new games. I think I improved some stuff, fingers crossed. I did figure out how to paint my ship: Pretty sure the colours were mis-represented Before After Yeah nah, not wearing that wearing a combo of gear. No not this

The only thing that is variable is the vendor "discount/markup" on all base price and I have no idea if they gave different base ones to some vendors in-game (but I read some stuff are cheaper in the Wells so maybe). For a full simulated economy with variance per item type and place, that would require an heavily scripted mod to make it work. So they went with the next thing: let players set up their own business from extracting resources to making things and selling them via the outposts systems.

Does anyone have any suggestions re their approach to the game other than following the main quest line? I’ve been jumping around in UC space quite a bit, mostly visiting major settlements (you can tell where they are in system because their planets/moons have little city symbols over them in the system map). It’s amazing to me how much detail Bethesda put into each one. Most will give you a few quests and you got lot’s of people to talk/listen to and learn about the world. Those side quests send me to do a little exploring and combat in between. It’s a good mix so far.

Had a couple WTF moments last night. That Abandoned Weapons Facility on Luna had been overrun by pirates, who had apparently captured the research staff. I found a note describing their emergency protocols, which were to go along quietly rather than try to shoot it out. So that explains no bodies. But reading the note gave me a new Activity. Apparently a rescue mission? OK, but how exactly do I now know that the pirates came from Vulture's Roost? How do I know which star system that's in? I feel like I've jumped a couple steps ahead somehow. It's not like I've got SAM feeding me info. Anyway, that base is far off, and I'd have to travel through several new systems to get there, so I'm putting this off for later. The other thing is that I went back to that Pipeline Control Tower I mentioned in the other thread. Still can't find anything for that key to unlock (maybe it works in some other location?) And apparently, the game can't decide whether the building is in vacuum or not. The airlocks didn't close when I walked through them. And it turns out that needing spacesuits on the Moon is just a myth.

That's a bug, and it seems a rather common one. Reviewers claiming this was the less bugged BSG game seems to be off or they didn't play that much to see all the glorious issues around.
