"Andromeda" was bland and a poor attempt to imitate a Marvel movie. BSG and the original trilogy were serious adult sci fi. Mass Effect Andromeda is just goofy compared to them.
Back in 2013 this is what I imagined narrative sci fi video games in the mid to late 2010s would look like.
Why have video game producers failed to make space sci fi games with serious adult stories?
If Squadron 42's story is light years ahead of Andromeda and much better than Starfield then the amount of money, people, resources, and time spent on those games would have been a waste and we should have had something like Squadron 42 back in 2017.
We should have gotten a space sci fi game that was more like the Battlestar Galactica re-imagining or the original Mass Effect trilogy in the mid to late 2010s.
Should the next Mass Effect be more like Andromeda or like serious adult sci fi like ME OT, The Expanse, and BSG?

Star Citizen is the most expensive game ever and it's still in development, with Squadron 42 being part of that said development and also still not released.
So I have no goddamn clue why are you using this game as an example of a Sci-Fi game's performance in the 2010s???
Is this just another lame attempt to dunk on Andromeda?

The most expensive game currently in the making is GTA VI with a 2 billion USD budget vs Star Citizen's and Squadron 42's shared ~600 million. Not sure if other juggernauts like that are around.
Squadron 42 and MEA are ultimately very different products. They share the science fiction theme but that's about it - almost everything else is different, from the style of story and writing to what you actually do in the game. MEA is what it is, no matter whether Squadron 42 exists or not.

A bit of constructive feedback: I've seen quite a few of your threads, and the pattern seems to be "Why was x better/worse during x-time period". Respectfully, have you ever considered that this might reflect a lack of perspective on your part, and that you're projecting your own feelings from whatever time period onto the topic you're discussing?
It's possible you're making these threads because you're seeking social connection and view talking about your own experience with these topics you're passionate about as a good way to do so, which is great and all, but you tend to give scant evidence for your claims. If you think a certain time period is worth noting, explicitly try to show why in depth by giving a comparison with different time periods and providing concrete examples of good/bad trends between these periods. To most people, these threads are gonna come off as low effort and indicative of a lack of research into whatever talking about. Inevitably, some people are gonna disagree with what you're saying anyway, and when you continuously make weak/non-existent arguments to back up the same copy-and-pasted thesis in different forms, you're giving people ample room to dismiss you from the get-go.

I do agree that there is a lack of adult sci-fi games. I mean ME2 was the last sci-fi game that I truly immersed myself in. I did enjoy starfield, but personally I would love a game more akin to the show The Expanse. I want something much more grounded than ME. Squadron 42 does look like it may just do that. But, who really knows when that thing will get a release date. I'll probably be in my 70s, before it ever see the light of day lol.

No wonder they are trying to charge $200.

I wish them well and the concept art does look intriguing. But it's clearly in very early stages. I hope the IP is original enough to stand out.

It's basically "any and all media were better in another decade and how modern day media sucks in comparison". This comes a lot in decades long franchises like Star Trek, Star Wars, Doctor Who, The Transformers, Marvel, and DC.

In the beginning, computer games were a niche product. Even back then, people wanted to earn money with them, but it wasn't a mass product. Not everyone had a console or a computer at the time I would say from 2000 onwards it became more and more mainstream, also because more and more people could afford consoles and computers. Today, the games market has become so big that you can almost compare it to the film industry. The downside of this is that now, especially the AAA games are being made for the mainstream. That's why most AAA games are very similar and not very provocative. or creativ and often boring

The reason is simple: Marvel movies make a LOT of money and most have gotten a lot critical acclaim, so why wouldn't BioWare or any company not want that? People want to escape from reality not be reminded how bad the world sucks right now I can watch and listen to the news for that. So pardon me if I don't want a steady diet of super serious grimdark hopeless nihilistic sci-fi like BSG and the MET were. I've over that and honestly I sick to death of that shit, so I will gladly take MEA and Marvel over more of that same old old boring super serious grimdark hopeless nihilistic sci-fi shit. And oh yeah fuck "realistic" and realism in sci-fi too if I wanted realism I will watch a fucking documentary.

The weird thing is that Andromeda isn't really that optimistic or hopeful. Their situation sucks and there is little cause for optimism if you actually think and consider all the details. It's only the surface that seems optimistic and fun. Like they had to choose between crying or laughing and they chose the latter.

You mean the guy who came up with and forced through the Mass Effect 3 endings? And the same guy who dreamed up Dylan, a.k.a. what they thought of as the G.O.A.T.; known to us as Anthem? And the same guy who left Biower after the ME3 endings debacle, to go to Microsoft, where he did nothing of note, only to return to Biower as CEO, where again, noting of note, only to leave again? Never forgive or forget those responsible for the ME3 endings mess, or the "leadership" responsible for Biower's lost decade. He is primary in both, with the worst part being zero acknowledgement of either.

I'm currently watching Farscape most people think it's a humorous light-hearted space romp and while it does have it's totally absurd episodes it's at times MUCH darker than BSG it just uses humor and absurdity a cover for it's darker elements the same with it's unofficial remake The Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and the same with MEA.

Yes, it was an amazing show and the silliness on the surface probably makes a lot of people give it a pass. I suppose in general it may have once been easier to get series approved if they seemed lighthearted?

They certainly were because they were not suffering from brain rot via social media and hatred of past sci fi works like authors today are.

They certainly were because they were not suffering from brain rot via social media and hatred of past sci fi works like authors today are.
The backlash to the remake of Battlestar Galactica and the fan's hatred of the Star Wars prequels proves my point.
Also check out some the hatred that Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: Voyager all got from fans in letters to various sci-fi magazines, some of the early reviews of the shows and so on, and go read up on the backlash to the death of Optimus Prime got in The Transformers: The Movie back in 1986.
Sorry but fandom bitching didn't start with the internet it's only made it more visible and worse. Sci-fi, fantasy, and horror fandoms have ALWAYS had trolls and toxicity the only difference you had to really work at being a toxic troll back in the days before the internet.
