In Mass Effect we can see influences from Star Trek, Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, and even a little bit of Star Wars but I saw a lot of Mass Effect when I read the book "A Fire Upon the Deep" by Vernor Vinge. One alien civilization in particular reminded me greatly of the Quarians.
In this video you could see a stack of Hyperion novels by Dan Simmons at 2:00.
Were there any Hyperion influences in Mass Effect or were many of the devs just hardcore fans of sci fi?

Original BioWare devs seem to have been fans of fantasy and Star Wars. Not a leap to suggest science fiction as well. Maybe one of the earlier devs read the book, which I'm now interested in doing.

I would say there were a number of influences mainly from the 80s and 90s. People say Star Wars but I see more similarities with Star Trek and B5. Yes working on KOTOR inspired them to make ME but the setting itself is more like those other ones.

I see KOTOR the most in ME. ME feels like what KOTOR 3 would have been, in 3 Acts. Other than that I see Pitch Black/Riddick influences, specially in ME2.
