Can't remember, is it best to do Samara's Loyalty mission as early as possible, or was it best to leave it to the end? (If you're going Renegade and trying to pass all the persuade options.)

As long as you are taking mostly renegade+intimidate options (or even enough paragon+charm options), you should have enough persuasion to survive Morinth's brain and then recruit her, regardless of when you are trying to get her.

In my last playthrough I saved Samara's Loyalty Mission for last (well, not dead last as that was Jacob's). By that time I had my Renegade score almost maxed out even though as always I choose Renegade or Paragon choices depending on the situation, although leaning heavily towards Renegade. I also had my class specific skill maxed, adding a significant bonus to Paragon/Renegade scores (I chose the skill variant that enhances said scores the most).
Following this procedure should do the trick so by the time you get to that moment with Morinth you can resist her (Paragon/Renegade check) and the ability to choose between her and Samara becomes available.
