Please don't call me a bigot. I didn't say I didn't want one as a companion. I was saying why practically it might be have been difficult for them to introduce a non-binary one at this stage. I'm pretty sure Weakes would have done so if they could. My apologies. Reading your post it came off as a way I’ve seen many speak over the years. That said I can’t remember where but I do remember devs saying they wanted to at some point. But I’ll drop it. The original post was just meant to stir thoughts, not debates like this

Saw someone comment on this, so thought I’d share it here. We know Taash is written by a non-binary writer We know Taash is played by a non-binary actor Wouldn’t be surprised if Taash is our first non-binary companion.
Yeah, I've read a leak which mentioned that Taash is non-binary. I would not be surprised either.

No In german they and she are the same word "Sie". If a non-binary would call Sie as well the female and the non-binary would call the same. In Germany we go around by calling the name. Similar to what Thailand normaly does.
It is complicated and the reason i as dyslexic not a fan of this at all. Call all "it" and it would be easier for many. Sorry that is my opinion.
Looking it up, that’s not true. There’s quite a few pronouns that are used for nonbinary people in German, like Xier. But like you mentioned, if there are issues the dubs can simply use the character’s name. I am german and i never heared the word Xier in my life. I will look it up. edit: This are unofficial words, that are only be used by a few people. Which one should they pick?
Yes, the only problem is that many people are confused by it. And at least in germany it is a hot topic. So i understand that they are careful. And Taash get enough hate for her look allready. So they do it like with DAO. One step after another. Maybe we get one next game.

Apology accepted. I'm sorry if I upset you too. I thought I remembered something about non-binary being mentioned but I don't think it was to do with Taash. One of the VAs who voices Rook identifies as non-binary (I think) and said it was cool to be given the opportunity to voice a non-binary character. I assumed that perhaps if you select non-binary for your gender they will offer that VA as the default, although you can still choose one of the others if you wish. May be I misunderstood them.

Correct, Erika (the American Feminine VA) is genderfluid and is very excited to play a nonbinary character and will choose all the dialogue about it. I don’t think it’ll set that one as default unless you pick the feminine body for qunari and dwarf if they assign voices to races like in DAI until you choose. So they do it like with DAO. One step after another. Maybe we get one next game. ”Maybe next game”. Yeah right, they said that with Asexual characters after DAI and look how that turned out.

There’s quite a few pronouns that are used for nonbinary people in German, like Xier. At the risk of being unpopular, is this a real pronoun or a made up one? Not everyone is familiar with the plethora of made up ones and it could be very confusing for people that are not. The companions are just the basic sexes but Rook can be non-binary if you wish. Please just leave it at that. Made up of course. As a German of advancing age, I have never seen this used in spoken or written language at all. Doesn't mean you won't find it if you poke around some social media bubbles but so far I haven't.

Hmmm... I'm old school. I used to hire people with the skills and talent for the job. So, what's a non-binary writer / actor? And why do you use this description.

I try to explain. And i hope this is okay. I am sure they hire people for skill and talent. Because a bad writer or actor wouldn't make a good game. Non-binary is someone that isn't male or female. The nearest i can think of in nature is the snail that is a hermaphrodite. But i am not sure, if it is similar. I think of them as someone that has both a female/male body and the oposite in ?. I take me as an exemple, even if i am not a non-binary.
I am a female, but my body is a mix of male and female body parts. The reason, i have more testosterone in my body then a average female. So i think non-binary have an even more difference beetween body/hormone and ?.

”Maybe next game”. Yeah right, they said that with Asexual characters after DAI and look how that turned out. I don't understand it with Asexual, but maybe it is a matter of writing. To find someone that can write them well. Corrine isn't a writer, if i am remembering correct. Maybe the other don't feel like they are up to the task. And as she say, better non than a bad written one.

Non-binary people are those who don't identify as a man or a woman, identify as both etc. It doesn't have anything to do with someone's body parts. Essentially there is sexual identity, which is based on biology, and gender identity, which is based on how your view yourself and this will be influenced by how wider society perceives what is masculine or feminine. As I understand it, non-binary are those individuals who do not feel they conform to the gender stereotypes of their society and thus would prefer to identify themselves as something different, in other words gender neutral. An alternative would be to describe yourself as a non-conformist man or non-conformist woman or just not accept gender stereotypes at all because they will vary from society to society, culture to culture. I personally do not believe there is a gender typical man or gender typical woman in a world of 8 Billion people and we are all wonderfully unique individuals. I understand why some people may feel happier identifying as non-binary but this can create problems when it comes to language as I have already highlighted.

I don’t have strong feelings about Taash being nonbinary or not, whatever Weekes decided is fine with me, but I’m a little confused by the translation argument. Translators are already going to have to deal with the concept of a nonbinary Rook, and translation in general is inherently complex and filled with concessions, approaches often dictated by the individual translator.
For example, the translator for Anne Garette’s Sphinx would omit the gendered French out of the book before translating to English, and when Rabassa translated Hopscotch he described himself as an actor playing the ‘role’ of author. This Little Art by Kate Briggs is a good book that grapples with the issues inherent to translating between languages, although how video game translation functions is something I know less about.
All of this is to say that Taash’s gender will likely be the least of the translators’ concerns, whatever it might be.

And that is the reason i struggling. Because i don't see the need for new words. But more the need to achieve greater acceptance in society. A men in a dress is still a men until he say other wise.

If their body isn't different from what they are feeling. I am really confused about your answere.

It's getting ridiculous that Taash is among the companions that were shown the most and yet she still doesn't have a normal in-game screenshot of her lol. It's either a weird angle or a weird expression or both or it's in a very bad quality.

I agree with Jennica, the lighting and pose is a little weird. Not sure what's going on there. Although as someone mourning the loss of Harding's forehead, I wouldn't mind big brained Taash, heh.

I wish they'd given us a pic of her looking somewhat at the camera(I want to see more of her hair), but the details we do finally get to see on her look cool. The trinkets and necklaces are nice, as are the details on her horn rings.
