Since we have confirmed that our new PC shall be referred to as Rook, I decided to do a bit etymology research behind any possible hints as to why they chose that name. This lead me to the following.
A European bird, Corvus frugilegus, of the crow family. A cheat or swindler; someone who betrays. A bad deal; a rip-off. A type of firecracker used by farmers to scare birds of the same name. A trick-taking game, usually played with a specialized deck of cards. A parson. A chess piece shaped like a castle tower, that can be moved only up, down, left or right (but not diagonally) or in castling. A castle or other fortification. Shorthand or slang for a rookie.

If we can't change the name for our character, I'll go with the bird explanation I always loved birds of the corvidae (crow) family, I never understood why people view them in such a negative way as it's commonly the case.

I assume it's the last one, but I kinda hope it's one of the other ones. A couple of those are pretty juicy.

Based on the image in the previous post, I am going with the chess analogy. Also, I wonder if there was any foreshadowing in his chess game with Iron Bull. He sacrificed his last Tower (Rook), moved his pawn, sacrificed his Queen (Mythal), moved his pawn and Checkmate.
Even the cover of the book has the Wolf surrounded by what is probably meant to be the Fade whilst looking down on the Rook. So, Rook is his chess piece.
Now think back to his conversation with the Inquisitor. We ask won't dropping the Veil free the false gods. He responds: "I had plans." We assume those plans have been interrupted by the loss of his orb but he recovered from that one, absorbed Mythal and used the idol instead. However, everything we know of his plan is what he chose to tell us. Somebody suggested before that perhaps telling us he was going to destroy the world was so that we would seek to stop him. However, the current ritual was never intended to remove the Veil altogether but release the (last) two old gods that we would then have to deal with. Rook was unknowingly playing into this. Meanwhile one of our team is his pawn or alternatively the Drinker of the Well of Sorrows. The ultimate goal of Solas is to neutralise the false gods and then drop the Veil (his pawn using the magic knife the do this), thus cleansing the world of the Blight that has fully been exposed by the false gods. Solas then walks free, mission accomplished.
Remember it always seemed bonkers that he would tell the Inquisitor that he was going to destroy the world because, as Charter says, naturally we would try to prevent this. He keeps apologising and saying he did it in a moment of weakness so we could enjoy a few years of peace. This was ridiculous. Who was going to sit back and chill when they know the world is about to end? Certainly not if they believe they could stop it. Also, I don't think Solas ever had a moment of weakness. When he told the Inquisitor it was with deliberate intent to further his own plans. Of course I could be completely wrong about this but I'm not going to trust anything he says to us as being the truth.

Since 'Rook' is apparently a nickname that pre-date meeting Varric, the reason for the nickname might be different per faction.
In-game, they might still be someone chess piece and that cover can actually be looked at the Rook checking the King (wolf head).

I'm going with multiple meanings to define the relationship. Swindler: SolasA fortress or castle: Belonged to Solas but now is ours.Rooks in chess move horizontally and vertically forming the backbone of defensive and offensive maneuvers. Us.
But queen Mythal will show up to save the day

Yeah it coul dbe dependant on faction. I'm mostly thinking Rookie as I think it'll fit the kind of characters I'll largely be going for in that they'er young and inexperienced but keen to learn and do better not just for themstlves but for their friends an dhe wider world .As that' skind of how I pla ym yRyder's in Andromeda. I' m playing it lik ethat they're smar tenough to realise what they have to do even if the ydon't necessaril yhav eall th eexperienc et opull it all off.

I suspect its intended to work on multiple levels, but I think the chess reference had to be something deliberate: the PC is a piece in the high-stakes game of chess we're playing. They're not the king or queen, but still a formidable piece. And "Rook" can also be used to denote "rookie" and other relevant things. So I suspect that's roughly the story behind the new PC's name.

In my language, Rook mean forward. And we also say ROOK in our chess game (Thai Chess) when player make a move that can beat Khun (King) (similar to check in English).

Probably because they will eat anything from crops to dead bodies. In much of Europe, the common crow is the Carrion Crow, and the name says it all. Probably also why the collective noun is a murder of crows. They have been associated with death at least since the Middle Ages. I prefer the bird explanation, myself. Possibly followed by the castle. Not a fan of being called rookie all game.

I think it's probably a chess thing. Think about this: at a start of a chess game, rooks are relatively weak, since they are in the corners and other pieces and pawns are blocking them. This is like our character at the beginning, where they are not strong, not widely known, and outshined by other characters. Once the chess game progresses, rooks are " developed", becoming more active and gaining more values as pieces, just like how our character is doing quests and getting stronger. And at the endgame of chess, rooks are often critical pieces that decide the outcome. And I would bet that our Rook will be the main character that will decide the fate of Thedas.

Rook doesn't sound badass to me. Or even pretty. I honestly hate it. I love the association with chess and specifically Solas and Iron Bull's banter game, but it does sound a little silly to me. No worse than the mouthful "Inquisitor" was, though. I'm hoping my Rook will have a catchy name I can use instead, like Lavellan.

Crows are a menace especially during lambing season where they will attack exhausted ewes and try to eat the eyes out of lambs halfway through being born.
