Premade Defaults: John/Jane Shepard, Hawke, Scott / Sara Ryder. These are generaly high-quality models and textures in line with companions, at times modeled after a real person. They are largely used in promotion, often leading to an "iconic" image of that game's protagonist. By default, they're not editable at the CC - it's take it or leave it. I guess the bad part about these is that they have such a strong, iconic image, that it almost feels wrong to play as anything but them. Custom Presets: DAO and DAI (Custom presets), DA2 and ME2 (had Custom presets, as well as Premade defaults). You can customize your character to your heart's will - which is awesome. But generally speaking, these are arguably inferior-looking (or have been in the past), features are modular, so, especially next to companions, the difference should be noticeable. Well... as BioWare likes to say and I paraphrase "the canon protagonist is whoever you played as". But which do you prefer? In your canon/main, have you played more as the defaults or did you customize your character? It seems they're going the DAI route with Veilguard, but would you like there to be premade characters? Discuss!  (((In my case: Mass Effect Trilogy: Default Femshep. Mass Effect Andromeda: Default Sara Ryder. Dragon Age Origins: Custom Dragon Age 2: Default Femhawke, but I've also played custom characters. Dragon Age Inquisition: Custom.))

Either way I do tend to start off with the custom characters but with DA the 'presets' have never really been that well advertised. More like window dressing. Yeah, you can tell they didn't spend a lot of time on those presets. To be kind.  They can be a decent starting point, though.

Both in MELE and DA2, at some point default John/Jane Shepard and Garrett/Marian Hawke had such a strong visual like, carved forever into my brain because of all the promo stuff, that I had trouble imagining them looking like anyone else. Same with the Ryders, to a smaller degree. Maybe that's why in Dragon Age, they usually have the protagonists in helmets (the armor may be iconic, but no particular image or identity attached to it). You can be whoever you like.

Strongly prefer to fully customise most of the Dragon Age protagonists since they can have so many different combinations of race, class and backstory. I want flexibility to create characters with scars and tattoos and other features that reflect the particular character and their background even if a preset versions might look 'better' .
With a more set character like Hawke, I like being able to adjust the preset even if I don't usually go far from it. I've got a bunch of Hawkes that are just the preset versions with different hair colours or without the beard on M!Hawke or with tattoos.

I know it won't happen but it would be awesome if they allowed people to download it a few days early to play around to set their PC and Inky ahead of time. That was such a huge selling point when DAO was about to drop. I must of made a few dozen characters.  I think it would help them sell way more copies. If I have to wait for the game to drop I know I'm not going to have the patience to spend a great deal of time on my first go playing with the CC. 30 minutes...1 hour tops. Let me at the story! Also, it would be great if Xenon is hanging out near the Mirror of Transformation in our hub making snarky remarks about any changes we might make. |

I like the idea of CCs and really want to spend time in them getting them meticiliously right, but I just end up getting impatient to actually start the game. But given the fact I'll have to create Oliver and Kara will probably take about two hours this time out.

I never played a deafult character like...ever, What's the point? they never look like a character I'd like to play, and I usually resent them because they have the better hairstyle, but for no reason at all that hairstyle is not awailable for the custom character. That have always angered me to no end. Expecially in ME. Like, why do I have to play miss botox to have the better hair?! I don't like default femshep at all, but for no reason the only decent haistyle is only for that very ugly mug.

That would be the best scenario to promote sales imo...it worked well enough for BG3 (was that free?) If they're confident enough in the section up to the Solas ritual then people will pony up the 70$ or whatever cost to continue the story. Of course it'll be plastered all across youtube in short order so the visuals, gameplay, RP elements are going to need to impress the broader audience to get good sales numbers...that's true regardless of approach. I'm rooting big time for a successful launch so I can get ME-next.

In ME I always go with the preset appearance, like u say it is way more detailed.
In games such as DA and BG I prefer that there is no preset model though, as the point is to create a character that is pretty much 100% your own.

Custom whenever possible for a simple reason: I like a very specific appearance and/or type of character and if I'm forced into a premade character I'll most likely pass the game entirely. Would I be forced to play with the Rook shown in the gameplay trailer, I'd pass on the game.
There are a few games with a pre-defined protagonist that I'll play like the Witcher 1-3. but then again I've been a fan of Geralt since before the games and he's pretty close to my prefered looks.

I still mourn the fact we can't customize the companions like we could with Hawk in DAI. Since we'll be doing it with the main and the Inquisitor, it certainly would have been possible to allow the players to change the companions' appearance if not the sex, race, voice & background. So the Trash fans could have had their voluptuous female...
Oh well, since it is not an option, full customization. It'll be the only way I can get a cute white boy, if not as a romance option then at least as myself.

When I first played ME I went for default Shepard cause the cc was atrocious lol then some sometime later I think it was before MEA, I revisited my canon boy and did a thai Shepard who turned out to be hot enough to me even for ME cc standards.
I want to play Jade Empire someday but the fact I cant customize the character (I know you can choose some presets/classes) is one of the few things that stop me from playing, maybe one day.
DA:tV cc sounds very promising, hopefully I can make a cute chubby bear human Rook that doesnt look like an abomination (chubby body types are always too muscled and weird looking for me in these kind of games)
