I love the weapons in Mass Effect 3. There is excellent variety of guns, even when compared to actual dedicated shooter games, and the weight mechanic is great from a game design standpoint as it gives a valid reason to have weapons that are seemingly sub-par as long as they make your powers recharge faster. Add in mods, ammo powers and armor pieces and you really can make just about everything work, even on Insanity.
Still, there are some weapons that take more effort to become viable than others and this thread is dedicated to them.
Assault Rifles
Sniper Rifles
SMGs
Pistols
Shotguns
This is obviously just my opinion and if you disagree, I'd love to see these weapons get more love.

Assault Rifles
- Argus - I can see what the devs were trying to do here, but a close-range, burst-fire niche was filled better with the Hornet at a much lower weight.
- Mattock - The Harrier is an improvement in every way, the Mattock actually deals less damage than its automatic brother, despite what the weapon description states. The only reason to use the Mattock is ammo conservation and that is more of a skill issue than anything else.
- Vindicator - I debated on whether or not I should put this here as it really isn't that bad but the game has 17 ARs so why not? If it had the same fire rate as it did in ME2 then it probably wouldn't be here.
Sniper Rifles
- Incisor - Much like the Vindicator, the Incisor had its fire rate nerfed but it suffers far more in this regard. The lower fire rate accentuates the recoil to the point that the Incisor is almost unusable outside of cover. The only SR that might be better when aiming at the torso as aiming for the head will just cause the rest of the burst to go to waste.
- Javelin - At least in the Legendary Edition, the Javelin seems to deal the same amount of damage as the Widow but needs a brief charge-up time to fire. It does have a unique scope that highlights enemies through walls but it's up to you to decide whether or not it makes the Javelin worth it.
SMGs
- Locust - The most accurate SMG in the game but it comes at the cost of magazine capacity and the damage output is mediocre at best. Should have kept its bonus damage against armor.
- Geth Plasma SMG - It's like a pocket Typhoon, holding down the trigger increases damage and fire rate but not to the point as its AR counterpart. You are going to have to expose yourself to enemy fire for a long time to get the most out of it.
Pistols
- N7 Eagle - I'm not sure what the devs were trying to do here. The Eagle plays like a very watered-down SMG, leading to the question as to why you wouldn't just use an SMG over this thing in the first place.
- Arc Pistol - You can charge the shots to deal more damage, but why wouldn't you just use the Carnifex or Paladin if that is what you seek?
Shotguns
- Katana - I didn't want to put starter weapons here as they are kind of meant to be sub-par and they at least have lower weight, but the Katana is an exception. Damage is too low for a one-shot kill while the fire rate isn't good enough to make it efficient. The poor accuracy will only compound both of these issues.
- Eviscerator - There's nothing really wrong with the Eviscerator, it's just that it doesn't excel in any particular role among the Shotguns.
This is obviously just my opinion and if you disagree, I'd love to see these weapons get more love.
