As much as I find myself looking forward to this game - and I'm even coming around to the new combat - one thing is bugging me. So many of the warrior skills seem to inflict elemental or necrotic damage and statuses (from what I can tell, necrotic damage has replaced spirit damage). Some of these can arguably be explained through environmental or weapon/projectile effects, but others seem downright magical.
For example:
- Spectral Bulwark and Deadly Ground each create a type of necrotic aura that damages enemies - Bloody Advance throws spectral blades that seek enemies and deal necrotic damage - Fury of the Forge and Warden's Fire rain burning blades down from the sky - Spirit Storm creates a necrotic whirlwind that siphons health from enemies - Reaper conjures an etheral scythe that deals necrotic damage
I'm all for having variety in combat, I'm just confused as to how non-mages could actually execute some of these skills. The unique ability of mages to channel magic from the fade - and the risks that come with it - is a fundamental piece of lore on which the series is built. In previous instalments there have been in-game reasons for say, templars empowering themselves through lyrium or reavers tapping into the magic of dragon blood.
I guess it could be something to do with runes or even the ritual Solas started. I just hope there is some kind of rationale beyond the good old 'rule of cool'. As it is, I'm considering avoiding some these abilities when building warrior companions.

Reaper (Mourn Watch themed spec) is clearly some type of Spirit Warrior (an Awakening spec) and the way the skill constellation works is that some of the spec themed skills are in the core right before you go into the spec. So Spectral Bulwark, Deadly Ground, Bloody Advance, Spirit Storm and Reaper are all related thematically.
Champion's Warden's Fire animation use an horn to summon the effect. It looks more like having an enchanted horn then an actual magical ability.

It looks more like having an enchanted horn then an actual magical ability. To be honest, I'd completely forgotten about the Spirit Warrior spec from Awakenings! That has a pretty specific explanation about making deals with spirits, though. Unfortunately the spec description for Reaper isn't very helpful: "Defender of the living and dead, the Mourn Watch Reaper leeches life from enemies, throws shields with precision and turns their own pain into strength." It sounds as though they're trying to go for a mash-up of Spirit Warrior and Reaver, despite those specs being unrelated in previous games. I suppose I could head-canon the spirits part! The magic horn makes sense for Warden's Fire but Fury of the Forge doesn't seem to have anything like that.

Pretty sure Slayer Is a purely physical dmg and two hand focus specialization. Its all about stagger and slappin hard with a big weapon.
I do find It puzzling as well. Inquistion had a bit of It, but not to this degree.

One is the dragon hunter spec, the other is from the Grand Necropolis. I don’t think reaver is specifically a dragon hunter spec. There is a codex entry in DAO about dragon hunters having run-ins with reaver dragon cultists, who are not specific to Nevarra (and might have originated in Tevinter). Anyway, neither have anything to do with the Spirit Warrior spec as far as I’m aware. I’m warming to the idea of Reaper being a Mourn Watch version of Spirit Warrior, though.
