My two biggest problems with bg3 cast are that I loathe Wyll’s re-write and that the Origins system creates companions that have to also function as protagonists, which makes it all feel a bit strange. They’re pretty fun though, easily the best companions Larian have written. How was Wyll rewritten? I didn't keep a close eye on early access, though I do remember disliking how they made Shadowheart fluffier in the release version. He was a charlatan and his backstory was tied to the goblins. More theatrical, obviously a fraud, but still someone who cared and wanted to help people in need, like the tieflings. It was a much more compelling character and conflict, someone who took the easy path but still accomplished good deeds in the progress. He had no obvious ties to Karlach, and there were hints he was in a romantic relationship with his patron.

I wonder if they changed that in response to early access complaints of not enough good-aligned characters. I agree it sounds more interesting than what we got.

In EA Wyll did seem to be the only 'good' guy, just with a dodgy past. But his personal story was linked to a feud with a goblin, which seemed rather petty compared to what everyone else had going on. I must admit to being one the the people who commented that the companions all appeared a little too 'edgy' in EA, like something out of a goth teenagers fanfic. I was then a little disappointed by Shadowheart's reasonableness in the release version. In retrospect maybe what I wanted was just a more mature edginess?

Honestly, his feud being so much smaller in scale was partly why I liked him compared to the others, ha, especially since it fed into a justified if erratic and self-serving anger. I think his writer was the same as Lae'zel, who felt similarly grounded... she just also happened to be a pirate space frog lady.
The game probably would've benefited from a more obviously "good-aligned" character introduced as the initial companion; it'd be like if Origins gave you Shale and Morrigan first instead of Alistair and Morrigan. That was always my issue more than the edginess (which I mean is just kinda Larian's MO), and they had to change Shadowheart to fit that for plot reasons. I also just missed the huge cast from previous games, they weren't as developed, but there was a sense of moving in and out of lives that I really liked and haven't found in many other games.
