Hey all, it's - roughly - that time of year.
What was your favourite game this year? If you have wide tastes in types of games, break them down! Favourite RPG, favourite tactical, favourite visual novel. Whatever works.
I know not everyone plays a huge number of new games every year, so it doesn't have to have been released in 2024 - it just has to be new 'to you'.
And no criticising the choice(s) of others, thanks. This is not a thread to bring down people for liking what they like, or deconstructing why they like it.

The other new games I played this year, I think it was "I was a Teenage Exocolonist" and a visual novel (you could argue they're both VNs) is Royal Order. Both good, Royal Order was geared for older players and was heavier on romance. Also, you're technically the villain which was a lovely angle.
Exocolonist has lots of NPCs I liked and lots of choices and endings. Tough call to say which I liked better😜 Exocolonist was more addictive and I guess I feel drawn to explore the other endings.
Both are stat raisers.
Replayed Stardew Valley and tried a new romance in it. Elliot is King, and since he's not a dragon, that's allowed.
Oh yeah, Vampire Masquerade Swansong was .. interesting. I didn't regret playing it, but wouldn't play it a second time.

For me Veilguard and it's because it is the only new game I played this year. While not new an honorable mention to Dragon Age: Inquisition while I thought the Inquisitor was bland I did enjoy the companions. I did buy Rogue Trader a few months ago but haven't played it.

I only bought a handful of games this year and now that I think about it, I pretty much enjoyed them all very much. Lucky me.
In somewhat chronological order:
Terminator: Resistance - an AA shooter set in the Terminator universe while John Connor is leading the human resistance. You fight SkyNet's machines, meet an interesting cast of characters and improve your arsenal. DLC features another story mission at the side of Kyle Reese, plus a bonus mission as that Terminator that breaks into the human resistance outpost at the beginning of the movie.
Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon - FromSoft's big robot shooter. I loved tinkering with the armored core (robot) - the game lets you swap out pretty much every bit of the body and attached weapons and devices. And paint it and put decals all over it. Looks great, plays great.
Space Marine 2: I'm a Warhammer 40k fan so this one was a no brainer to me. Looks absolutey awesome, respects the franchise and almost venerates the first game made by Relic Entertainment. My new number one of "good bloody fun" with a truly epic campaign and operations maps for multiplayer. Love the combat that rewards precision and timing over wild hacking around.

Yes, I forgot about this game as a big Terminator 1&2 fan I really liked the game. I like how future Connor looks like the actor who played him in the beginning of T2. I enjoyed all of the callbacks to those two films while not acknowledging the later films.

I mean, it's Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Let's be real, it was always going to be Veilguard for me.
Of the other 2024 games I have actually played this year: I thought the Alone in the Dark reboot was criminally underrated. Impeccable Lovecraft vibes, fun gameplay and great performances from the leads. I'm sorry it didn't sell.
Also really enjoyed Times & Galaxy from BioWare alumnus Ben Gelinas and the rest of the team at Copychaser Games. (Do you like the parts of Mass Effect where you run around the ship speaking to your co-workers (and flirting with them outrageously)? Do you ever wish the parts of the game where you leave the ship involved reporting on a cat show or a spaceship crash instead of shooting hundreds of people? Do you want to play as a robot with a cool reporter hat? Boy, have I got a game for you!)
I haven't finished it yet (got distracted by a certain BioWare Game ...) but Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is excellent so far and I'm looking forward to getting back to it when my Thedas obsession recedes a bit.
Oh and Last Epoch finally got out of early access this year! It's really fun if you're like that sort of thing.

New games I played in 2024: - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden - started fine but got very repetitive.
- Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered - ok, I'd played them before, not new.
- Skull & Bones (briefly via U+) - dreadful, glad I didn't pay for it.
- Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 - uninspiring (sadly)
- Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn - didn't connect
- Star Wars Outlaws
- Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Three to still be released in 2024:
- Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024
- Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl
- Indiana Jones And The Great Circle
Games I seriously considered but didn't eventually buy. - Final Fantasy VII Rebirth - thought I'd wait until Part III then play the lot.
- Dragon's Dogma 2 - too strong a focus on boss fights I thought.
- Black Myth: Wukong - the same.
Of the new games above, I only finished 2: - Star Wars Outlaws - started a 7/10, finished an 8/10
- Dragon Age: The Veilguard - started an 8/10, finished 10/10. Not perfect, but its pros suit me and its cons don't bother me. My GOTY.

I'm one of those who hasn't played very many 2024 games. My favorite of the ones I did was probably Songs of Conquest, a spiritual successor to Heroes of Might and Magic with lovely pixel art and fun campaigns. Unfortunately, the devs pulled the plug on more campaigns for the foreseeable future, but it was fun while it lasted.
My favorite game played in 2024 was Cultist Simulator, though it came out in 2018 and technically I first tried it last year. But that was only for a little bit, and I only got into it a few months ago. Once I got over that initial hump of having no clue how anything works, it became one of the most unique and satisfying narrative experiences I've had in a video game.

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth.
It's not even the best Yakuza/Like a Dragon game but it's really good. Probably my highlight of 2024.
I'm only at the beginning of Metaphor ReFantazio but I can also see why it's getting such high praise. Enjoying it so far, though it takes more brain power for me than Veilguard lol.

Definitely Veilguard, but then again I don't play that many games, only game I played in 2024 (other than like a DAO, 2 and DAI replay).
I like it, though. My offer with the nipples and Veilguard being GotY stands.

My GotY is Baldur's Gate 3! (Hey - I only finished it in April! ) Runner Up: The Talos Principle 2. DA: Veilguard was an uneven experience for me, so it winds up among the good, but not great, games.

Trying to remember what I even played this year.
Played Starfield from release until HFW came out on PC, not a new game technically but was new for me, and really enjoyed it.
Agree with Hrungr on Talos Principle 2 plus the expansion - lots of fun, good story, and hurt my brain a lot
Veilguard of course, because I waited 10 years to get the rest of the story, and then blew through it in 10 days.

I'm waiting until I get through DAVe at least once, but Horizon Forbidden West was also very good. The only other game that was new to me this year was Star Wars Outlaws. I think - unless DAVe drops off a cliff, Outlaws will end up 3rd, with HFW and DAVe duking it out for 1st and 2nd.

Favourite Game of the Year is:- BG3 (mis-read the OP, this isn't new to me this year, but it's still what I have enjoyed the most) Favourite New Game of the Year is:- Nothing. The only games I've been interested enough to buy this year are 40K Rogue Trader which was released last year and Greedfall 2 which is Early Access.

I don't think I bought many new games this year:
Banishers Ghost of New Eden God of War Ragnarok Dragons Dogma 2 Homeworld 3 Black Myth Wukong
I also played some games which I bought recently or years ago on sale but never played:
Metro trilogy Elden Ring
For the new games of this year, of the five games I played, it's Black Myth Wukong that's GOTY for me.

This year I mostly replayed a bunch of games I already played in previous years, but I did buy a few new games.
Most of the new games I played this year were smaller puzzle games or hidden object games.
I think the titles that stand out for me that I played for the first time this year, in order of date played: - Human Fall Flat (out for a few years) - Wobbly Life (out for a few years, still in early access) - Rebel Transmute (my most recently-played early game)
I may play some more games before the end of the year, so maybe something else will stand out to me between now and then.

- Shadow of the Erdtree (now that the trauma has subsided.)
- Dragon's Dogma 2, for all its issues, fulfilled a hefty amount of enjoyed game time for its price.
- I didn't rate Phantom Liberty as highly as most others (I'm still confused by how many people say it's better than the base game story) but it was certainly something I invested a good amount of time in and appreciated.

I will join the people saying BG3 is my game of the year for both 2023 and 2024. I was very busy this year, so didn’t get a chance to play a lot of games. Other games I played are FF16 and Stray. I also started Metaphor and will finish it after Veilguard. I was a bit burned out on Final Fantasy after playing 16 but will probably play FF7 part 2 at some point.

I was going through the email address I use for all my gaming storefronts (for something unrelated to this thread) and saw that in addition to DAVe, Outlaws and HFW...I also purchased and played for the first time; Fallout 4 and Stick Fight: The Game. I wasn't in the right head space to give Fallout 4 a real chance, so it misses out for now, likely through no fault of its own. And Stick Fight was fricken awesome fun, but it is no serious persons GotY.

I also didn't play many games for the first time this year, but my GOTY is absolutely DATV. I still have not finished it, but I'm truly loving it. Out of the few other games I played, second place is going to Pillars of Eternity. I'm also liking it a lot, but going through it much slower now since DATV came out

The only new games that I've played this year is - Yakuza Infinite Wealth
- Star Wars Outlaws
- Dragons Dogma 2
- Dragon Age Veilguard
Out of these, I would choose Yakuza Infinite Wealth as the most enjoyable. It was a breath of fresh air when the setting is based in Hawaii and there are a lot side activities that kept me entertained. Some of the writing can be be a bit goofy but it adds to the charm. Star Wars Outlaws was a good game too. I like the dynamic between Kay and Nix. Not a massive Star Wars fan (haven't seem any of the films ) but the game was still newbie friendly and was an engaging experience. I though Dragons Dogma would have been a game right up my alley but the story didn't grab me at all. Stopped playing half-way through because I got bored and have no desire to return. Dragon Age Veilguard is a fine game too. The locations are stunning and the CC is the best of the series in my opinion. I still prefer Inquisition to Veilguard though because I find the Inquistions companions more compelling.
