Latest trailer gave me feels of ME2 and the original. The former because we're introduced to the galaxy by having our ship get its ish pushed in by aliens. There was some ME1 Eden Prime in the trailer.
Is Bioware taking the safe route to making a great game this time around due to all the fan butthurt over ME3?

Hmm. Semi safe. They're still cautious after ME3 about doing stuff that might trigger fans I think, but they also learned that DA:I was probably too safe. For one, Mac Walters seems to have stuck to his guns about the protgonist only having one voice per gender, they play around with having two seperate characters as the potential protagonist and honestly I feel like the trailer is evoking a new kind of vibe that isn't overly nostalgic of the previous games. It feels like a mix of Guardians of the Galaxy and Battlestar Galactica. Considering what a drastic shift in the lore everything is too, I can't really feel like it's too safe. It's actually quite ambitious, I'm just worried they cop out of taking the story somewhere bold in the end.

Because every time they try and do something bold with their stories they seem to get massacred for it. Rightly and wrongly. About the tone though I am getting huge vibes of Stargate Universe from the game.

I think it's too early to decide. I didn't see enough, really, to make even an educated guess. I agree with Link"Guess"ski that much of it looked pretty ambitious, so I'd be inclined to say, "No", if forced. The plot is the key, though, and we know nothing about the plot but where it begins. If they play it safe with the plot, then there's your answer. I get good vibes, though, from this one. It looks promising.

I used to think that I was cynical and a pessimist. Then I found the BSN.

Having not played the game, I fail to see how we can judge whether or not they're playing it safe this time around.
That being said, I hope that they follow through with the narrative of us being the invaders this time around, and allow me to have a playthrough where I'm a complete imperialistic asshole.

Even if they play it overly safe with the plot the optional side content, the gameplay or the subplots can drag it out of the mud easily if those aspects work. I think if DA:I had a good plot I wouldn't have minded its game-design shortcomings, but as it was it felt like a big jack of all trades; master of none thing, and aside from the wonky jet-pack jumping I saw in the PS4pro demo, I have kinda high hopes for combat this time... and multiplayer.
I also think the story has tremendous potential and I think I actually want to read external material this time because I'm already way into the lore premise of Andromeda (excluding the Remnants. They seem like Baby Reapers to me)

I hope they take risks with our squad.
Give us some sidekicks from Andromeda alien races.
We don't need a bunch of dorks from the Milky Way [Peewee and Mr Human Police Officer].

Taking what was good from ME1 and 2, while leaving out the crap from ME3, besides the multiplayer aspect. I see no problem with that. If the game is a mix of both 1 and 2, then they have an epic on their hands.
