Fucking W E E B S E E B S Anyone know of any decent fantasy anime? Been enjoying Seven Deadly Sins recently and was wondering if there were others like it. Have you watched Legend of the Galactic Heroes? Its only one of the most overrated animes of all time after all.

Hm this thread dropped off the page, no biggie! Anyway, I was going to follow up on the other thing... I actually think my favorite character is oh right spoilers inc... Kaworu, his ability to forgive and understand the kind of perpetual mess that is Shinji is pretty profound and all told is pretty overwhelming.
Also his reflections on the nature of Adam and Lilith struck me as some kind of conflict of civilization sort of deal... but with kind of a harmonious resolution.
I interpreted that final moment as essentially that Kaworu as an angel believed that humans were in a state of rebellion and determined to destroy them in a perpetual conflict, and that therefore the angels were destined to destroy humans and humanity (or the Lilim).
Therefore, drawing on the strength of Adam, they would destroy the progeny of Adam and so on, but at the final descent he realizes that they are drawing on the strength of Lillith, and therefore as Lillim.
So in essence, they weren't necessarily competition, but complementary, therefore the necessity of destruction was obviated, but given the crisis something or someone also had to die. So therefore, Kaworu also convinces Shinji "whether I live or die makes no great difference to me"
Anyway, all that coming off the fact that he was able to connect immediately and such with Shinji and leave such a large impact, it kind of revealed the nature of angels as powerful but also possibly benevolent beings.
Anyway, I think the original series is worth watching by.. well... literally everyone, crazy ending included. Even nowadays scanning lots of available anime I don't come across many or hardly any that can match the power of Evangelion. Furthermore, only a handful are better for me, IMO.

Evangelion is one of those shows I think is reasonably good but not really deserving of quite the amount of praise it receives. It's certainly interesting as a deconstruction/critique of old mecha shows, but I don't think it quite holds together well enough in it's own right to be the kind of classic many people portray it as (I've not watched all the remakes - I saw the first one and felt it fell into the "OK but nothing more" category so didn't bother continuing).
I do love the original ending though. I know it was just something hastily thrown together after they ran out of budget, but it fitted the overall screwiness of the show much better than the "proper" ending they did later.

If we are talking EVA and favorite characters? Ehh Misato probably. To me she is sort of the cornerstone of just what the series was trying to represent beyond base symbolism. The whims of youth slowly being buried beneath age, duty and obligations. You can rebel against it, to an extent, complain and indulge in excess but at the end of the day, those responsibilities own you. This is irrelevant of social standing, material wealth or anything of that nature, because at some level you actually believe what you are doing to be right, and this is cast against self desire, morality and other factors.
While admittedly I did not grasp the intricacies of this character immediately, once I did I came to view her as perhaps the most complete character in the series, just the average adult. If she wasn't doing her job for NERV she would be in a lab somewhere, or a corporation, that regardless of the scenario she would be the burn out, the person weary with her life but yet incapable of doing anything else. She has her own traumas, desires and goals obviously but they are all but beneath her duty, something she laments even as she is dying, questioning whether or not what she did is right, or if she even led a fulfilling life.
Perhaps the most genuinely human character in the show. She has had suffering in past, done sordid and bad things, yet unlike other characters this is not so much a defining trait, her pain not overshadowing anything, but it like everything else building up to this rational construct that is the character. She comes across as alive, and despite suffering a few poor bits of writing here and there towards the end either format, I must say that its been a long time prior or after EVA that I ran into any character that just struck upon in just human, how real they were.

What other shows do you like more? Also agreed on Misato. Legend of Heroes is fine, in terms of the kind of that aesthetic but I think Berserk is a lot more inventing and interesting in tackling a kind of charismatic figure vs kind-hearted and understanding type of individual.

Within the specific genre of mecha deconstructions though, Bokurano is easily the best.

Within the specific genre of mecha deconstructions though, Bokurano is easily the best. Well, Space Battleship Yamato was a direct inspiration for Evangelion, I thought Queen Millennia was better than Yamato, but I also though Eva was better than both. As the others, I like most of them, fine, just not as much as Eva. The only one that jumps out at me is Hunter X Hunter, but I believe that one sorts of falls into a different sphere of stuff... not like it doesn't compete with Evangelion or something but it's explicitly focused on a DBZ style/Jump category. Nonetheless, that would still be the only one, and for a complex set of reasons, it has a completely different set of thematic interests and elements (as opposed to Yamato and Eva, for instance)

Although Trigun, Escaflowne, and especially Cowboy Bebop are commendable choices.

The original...well, it's very much a 70/80s era anime with the issues that shows of that kind of age usually tend to suffer from (good overarching story but the episodes tend to get very formulaic and repetitive) - as an aside, have you seen Ideon? It definitely has these issues which do make it rather boring at times, but it's quite interesting to see Tomino go completely off the deep end and it was a massive influence on Evangelion, even down to the utter WFT??? ending. Ultimately though, I really judge anime by the simple criteria of "how much entertainment did I get out of the show" - I'm not one for getting into more complex reasons for judging things - and those I listed are those that I most enjoyed

Would anyone like to attempt to persuade me to watch the following:
-DBZ -Naruto -One Piece
Because the Japanese sure haven't been able to.
This is despite the fact that it appears to be in the Japanese constitution that all citizens are required to like at least one of the above.
Lupin III also appears to be universally liked here, but that is anime for oyajis and therefore easy for me to like (even if it peaked with Miyazaki's Cagliostro no Shirou back in 1982).

Well first of all One Piece is way more entertaining than Naruto, IMO, so there's that. It's kind of complicated though like all 3 of those are incredibly long... like overwhelmingly... almost impossible to finish sorts of things. So... to persuade you to literally watch like 400 episodes er... that's a bit tough. I would say those series are more than they appear on the surface, sort of intentionally.... like a lot of the most interesting characters and moments in One Piece for instance come much later, IMHO. Also I failed at quoting but PhroX I have not seen Ideon, it looks interesting though. Edit: Also it's not listed, but Fairy Tail was more enjoyable than either Naruto or One Piece, IMO.

I am expected to tell you to choose One Piece, however, I am going to go off the rails and recommend that you check out Fate Zero and then its sequel, Unlimited Blade Works, to get your fighting fix. The story is deep and intricately woven (especially in the case of Fate Zero); the characters are interesting, the premise original (mages summon figures from history to fight on their behalf so that they may claim the Holy Grail and each servant (historical figure) has a class which grants it more abilities; Berserker, Saber, Archer, Assassin, Caster, Rider, and Lancer), and each series is about 24 episodes long as opposed to 300-800 plus. You also get some awesome gunplay and magic fights between the mages The fighting scenes are really something!
