So Alec Ryder is wearing N7 gear on the Pathfinder job for a civilian organisation (Andromeda Initiative). Is that allowed? Having an official military rank in a civilian thing?

N7 isn't really a rank, its a mark of having completed a whole bunch of training. As long as you earned it I think its OK.

N7 isn't military rank, it just says that he was good enough to get selected for, and finished highest level of Alliance special forces training. And I doubt there is anything stopping him from personalizing his own armor to sport N7 stripes and logo on it.
Or maybe he was assigned there by the Alliance, showing that governments have their fingers in Andromeda Initiative.
In the end, we don't know...not yet (and maybe it won't be talked about at all, and N7 armor is there purely because it was iconic in trilogy /shrug)

I believe there is more to this travel than what bioware is letting us know right now. That being said maybe there really isn't any rule against it. Hackett mentioned in a mail to Shepard about the N7 operatives (ME3MP) and how he wasn't going to stop them from using the designation. So i think stands to reason that no one would bother someone who won the N7 rank (Alec) if he wanted to walk around displaying it. Mass Effect Andromeda theme music may be played in Montreal's Video Game Musical Odyssey concert
in Dec 9. Bio did mention the theme will be revealed in December.
So, attendees may be the first ones to hear the theme.
The Montreal Orchestra will perform Canadian made songs from titles such as Batman, Deus Ex, Dragon Age, and Assassin's Creed .

In ME2, when Shepard wasn't in the Alliance, his/her Kuwashi visor did still sport an N7 logo on it (and it was just purchased on Omega). Doesn't his/her armor at the start of the game also have N7 logos on it? (it's been awhile and I usually switch out to the Kestrel set pretty quickly, so I'm not absolutely sure on that). At any rate, I don't think it's something that they are forbidden from displaying once they've earned it.
