Is there a superior option, or is it just a case of personal preference? I've been doing fine so far with the damage option over the extra shrapnel.

Extra shrapnel all the way around. 1) it's more damage bc it's damage per piece. 2) it gives you a higher chance of generating multiple combo explosions like biotic explosions.

Agreed, on top of that extra shrapnell seems to center the grenades, making easier to hit. Another point as a drell user more often than probably any character. You'll notice a difference in the way clusters split and throw on and off host. Learn to throw at the floor and off walls. If a map is closed like white or glacier you want a decent split on your shrapnel because you rarely can get concurrent explosions. If you're using the venom, falcon or acolyte (puke) you'll generate more explosions bc a BE wont deprime an incendiary priming and the FE won't deprime an underlying BE. Just some good for the thought if you're used to playing the drell a certain way to refresh your play style.
