I haven't- I haven't read anything by Sanderson besides his WoT books- but Mistborn is one I consistently hear good things about. I feel sort of obligated to give it a try because its so well-reviewed and respect, and I almost certainly will eventually, but I can never get myself to get started, I always end up putting it off. Have you read any of Sanderson's other stuff? Would you say Mistborn is his best work?

For a long time, it was my favourite in the series (hence my username). It wasn't until the much later books started to reveal things that 4 & 5 began to rise in the ranks. Its interesting, for a lot of fandom communities, there's a clear consensus about things like which is the best book/album/etc. Mars Volta fans will almost unanimously tell you Deloused or Frances are the best TMV albums, with Cassandra Gemini a clear favorite for best song. Tool fans agree Lateralus is the best album. ASOIAF fans tend to agree that Storm of Swords (book 3) is the best book in the series. But from what I gather, WoT fans seem to have a really wide range of opinions on which books are the best or worst in the series: For me, Lord of Chaos is my absolute favorite. I've read it maybe twice as many times as any other books in the series, sometimes I'll just read Lord of Chaos by itself without reading any of the previous/subsequent WoT books. The whole sequence with Rand getting kidnapped by Elaida's faction of Aes Sedai -> Rand getting freed/rescued by the Aiel/Ashaman, the first reveal of just how powerful and dangerous Taim has already turned the Ashaman into. Easily my favorite sequence in the entire series, gives me goosebumps/chills every single time I read it. You had me at Dumai's Wells. Hands down the best ending to a fantasy novel I have ever read. So fricken epic. A master of the craft at the absolute peak of his game. It even made its way into my signature here on the forum 6 has the best ending, no doubt, for me. But the rest of the book isn't quite as strong, I thought.

But the rest of the book isn't quite as strong, I thought. Its been a while since I read it, my memory is a little hazy on the first half of the book. But the second half of the book is just amazing. The Dumai's Wells sequence is not only may favorite sequence in any WoT books, its probably one of my favorite sequences in any novel, ever. The only competition would probably be the Tyrion's trial -> Jaime's confession of the real Tysha story -> Tyrion's escape and confrontation with his father sequence towards the end of book 3 of ASOIAF, or basically all of the Silmarillion. Either way, its fantasy fiction at its very best. Just thinking/talking about it makes me want to go re-read it. You should see my copy of Lord of Chaos, its an absolute mess from all the use and abuse over the years. Its amazing its still holding together at all.

WoT fans seem to have a really wide range of opinions on which books are the best or worst in the series Best? Sure. Worst? Crossroads of Twilight is the clear winner (although to be fair, it has been years since I've poked my nose into that fandom and its conversations). Whatever the epic fantasy version of 'this could have been an email' is...that's CoT.

That entire subplot with Faile getting captured by the Shaido and Perrin's having to rescue her was painful, it just dragged on and on and on and didn't really serve any purpose. I do a lot of skimming/skipping through most of that when I do a full series re-read.

But that's only four (HUGE) books in a projected ten book series. plus a couple of novellas.

All legends are born of truths. And just as much lies. These are mine. Judge me for what you will. But you will hear my story first.
I buried the village of Ampur under a mountain of ice and snow. Then I killed their god. I've stolen old magics and been cursed for it. I started a war with those that walked before mankind and lost the princess I loved, and wanted to save. I've called lightning and bound fire. I am legend. And I am a monster.
My name is Ari.
And this is the story of how I let loose the first evil.
Thus begins the tale of a storyteller and a singer on the run and hoping to find obscurity in a tavern bar. But the sins of their past aren't forgotten, and neither are their enemies. Their old lives are catching up swiftly and it could cost them the entire world. No one can escape their pasts and all stories must have an ending.

I just finished The Cult of the Spiderqueen by S.A. Sidor. The book is set in Lovecrafts Cthulhu mythos and is about an Amazonas expedition that goes sideways very quickly. I wasn't sure, if I should read the book, since I'm arachnophobe, but it was really good - adventurous, mysterious and well written. People, who are familiar with the Cthulhu mythos probably already guessed, which entity makes an appearance.

From the son of Jim Butcher, of The Dresden Files: On the streets of Boston, the world is divided into the ordinary Usuals, and the paranormal Unorthodox. And in the Department of Unorthodox Affairs, the Auditors are the magical elite, government-sanctioned witches with spells at their command and all the power and prestige that comes with it. Grimshaw Griswald Grimsby is…not one of those witches. After flunking out of the Auditor training program and being dismissed as “not Department material,” Grimsby tried to resign himself to life as a mediocre witch. But he can’t help hoping he’ll somehow, someway, get another chance to prove his skill. That opportunity comes with a price when his former mentor, aka the most dangerous witch alive, is murdered down the street from where he works, and Grimsby is the Auditors’ number one suspect. Proving his innocence will require more than a little legwork, and after forming a strange alliance with the retired legend known as the Huntsman and a mysterious being from Elsewhere, Grimsby is abruptly thrown into a life of adventure, whether he wants it or not. Now all he has to do is find the real killer, avoid the Auditors on his trail, and most importantly, stay alive.

Beerfish I have been reading a series of what was supposedly to be a trilogy but became 5 books. The trilogy took me ages to finish and then the 4th and 5th books dropped, it was the longest it has ever taken me to read such short books. I even skipped pages. Anyway I finished all 5 of these books, book 5 was the saving grace otherwise a truly ordinary series of books: Also finished book 11 of Dropship Troopers "Tango Down" by Rick Partlow. These have been a good series but one that has dragged on probably two books to long including book 12 which is yet to be released. Now reading the Jack Widow Book Series, the first three book trilogy. Book 1 Gone Forever has been a huge step up so far and I am enjoying the character and story, he seems to be a bit Jack Reacher but ugly.

Finished the first Jack Widow book, started well then the plot became a bit too obvious and the ending was good.
Started the second one and it has again gotten off to a good start and I had trouble stopping myself reading to go to bed last night which is a good sign.

Started book 1 of the Saga of the Seven Suns. Classic space opera stuff. It seems a bit generic for now, at least so far I haven't seen anything that one hasn't gotten in one form or another somewhere else already. But it's fairly enjoyable and relaxing to read, so good fun for late evenings before going to bed.

I read those a long time ago (I have little memory of the detail) but remember enjoying the first couple of books but struggling through the last few mainly just to finish the series. IIRC the premise of the first book kept repeating itself with a different element every book until the last few when a resolution was necessary. That was me though and who knows what my state of mind etc. I was in back then, you may enjoy them a lot more than I did.
