Peacemakers. The Galactic Union’s most capable enforcers and resolute negotiators, their name alone elicits fear and awe among the Union’s citizenry. Except for Jessica Francis. Not only is she the newest Peacemaker, Jessica is also the first Human Peacemaker, and she commands the respect of few, both inside and outside the Peacemaker’s Guild. No one believes humanity is ready to take on the mantle of being a Peacemaker, and Jessica is stuck flying a desk. That is, until a species-induction mission comes along, and she is in the right time and place to get assigned to it. The jungle world of Weqq was terraformed millennia ago and seeded to grow medicinal herbs to be used in the event of war. But when a routine MinSha collection mission stumbles upon a young TriRusk, a race that can synthesize diamonds and hasn’t been seen in centuries, the mission’s leader knows that more than just the MinSha will be interested in the creature, and that a Peacemaker’s aid will be necessary to protect the species. With mercenaries sent to kill everyone on the planet and an administrator reluctant to turn over the young TriRusk, a negotiated solution may be impossible, despite Jessica’s best intentions. Outnumbered and outgunned, there’s only one thing Jessica knows; she’s got them right where she wants them.

Behind enemy lines and displaced in time!
Before the Battle of Trenton, George Washington reputedly threw a coin across the river. What if that coin was a bicentennial quarter?
When a squad of ROTC cadets training at Fort Dix, New Jersey, in November 2008 find themselves transported to December 1776 in the days before the Battle of Trenton, they find a Continental Army in disarray and General George Washington contemplating the potential of a bleak future. To make matters worse, they’ve lost a modern M-16 rifle to a roving Hessian patrol. Understanding the ramifications of such a discovery, the cadets have no choice but to report to General Washington. Without ammunition or their own meager supplies, can Cadet Sergeant Jameel Mason and his friends steel Washington’s courage and set the infancy of the United States of America back on track?

I 've read the newest book of the Gereon Rath mystery series by Volker Kutscher. It's in German, but I know, that at least the first books are translated in English - you should grab them, they are so great. The book series starts in Berlin in the late 1920ies and the main characters are detective (Kommissar in German) Gereon Rath and Charlotte Ritter, who is one of the first women working in teh police firce (she is the intelligent one, not that Gereon is stupid, but he is reckless and often gets into trouble). The cases they solve are interesting and tied to the history of that time. The characters, even minor ones, are all well written and believable. I've read Transatlantik, the newest book. By that time, the Nazis have taken over and both Gereon and Charly are in trouble, because they don't fit in with the new establishment. I was on the edge the whole time, I've read that book, so gripping. I just looked it up and there are some of the novels translated in English - the first one is called Babylon Berlin, like the tv show based on the books (I wouldn't recommend the show, it has really nothing to do with the books)

The upside of the book are the Norns (basically ''evil'' high elves/drow), they are one of the more interesting races of the various fantasy books I read over the years, they are made proper alien in their behavior and societal structure to not feel like mere humans with pointy ears. That's refreshing and its interesting to follow their storyline. Biggest downside is pretty much everything that is not about the Norns. Especially, everything that involves the King & Queen. Whoever thinks that reading pages upon pages where nothing but the trivial conversations of an aging couple happens, where the husband, the king, is a bit on the simple side and gets scolded and constantly berated by his bickering wife, the queen -, should be whipped with birch twigs. There is absolutely nothing interesting about them and they constantly whine about the son they lost years ago. Like in every other sentence. Its maddening. You can easily skip most of those section and you would hardly miss any interesting story related content, but that would cut the book in half. I can only imagine those section were used by the Author as filler. So all in all the book is quite a drag and a chore to read, the only highlights the sections that involves the Norns, but they are good enough to keep me going.

I'm not sure I'd want to read a series about their mid-life crises...

Once, there was a shining civilization grounded on magic, with sorcerers, flying cities, iron ships, and castles in the clouds, and wonders beyond the dreams of mortal men.
And then, in a single cataclysmic moment fifty years ago, magic flared and the wondrous world came to an end. What few who survived are struggling to reclaim what they lost, while darker forces plot to shape the future to something more to their liking.
John, a young magician, is expelled from school after a disastrous experiment scarred his girlfriend and sent to join a band of adventurers in the Wildlands, the rough and twisted lands on the edge of the civilized world. Their first mission: defeat an evil sorcerer and liberate his thralls before he becomes a threat to all.
But it may already be too late...

I was a huge Tad Williams fan but I read something that really put me off reading his books, I think it was Shadowmarch. I really liked his To Green Angel Tower books of which I still only have Storm, wonder if I loaned the others and never got them back??? I also liked his Otherland books and The War of The Flowers.

I`m currently reading The Seven Wonders By Steven Saylor. "The year is 92 B.C. Gordianus has just turned eighteen and is about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime: a far-flung journey to see the Seven Wonders of the World. Gordianus is not yet called “the Finder”—but at each of the Seven Wonders, the wide-eyed young Roman encounters a mystery to challenge the powers of deduction. Accompanying Gordianus on his travels is his tutor, Antipater of Sidon, the world’s most celebrated poet. But there is more to the apparently harmless old poet than meets the eye. Before they leave home, Antipater fakes his own death and travels under an assumed identity. Looming in the background are the first rumblings of a political upheaval that will shake the entire Roman world. Teacher and pupil journey to the fabled cities of Greece and Asia Minor, and then to Babylon and Egypt. They attend the Olympic Games, take part in exotic festivals, and marvel at the most spectacular constructions ever devised by mankind. Along the way they encounter murder, witchcraft and ghostly hauntings. Traveling the world for the first time, Gordianus discovers that amorous exploration goes hand-in-hand with crime-solving. The mysteries of love are the true wonders of the world, and at the end of the journey, an Eighth Wonder awaits him in Alexandria. Her name is Bethesda."

How far would you go to remember your past?
Kieran Roark awakens in a wheelchair, unable to remember anything. As part of a classified experiment, he will have one year to learn his identity and recover his memory, or he will be euthanized by the state.
Scientist Berkeley Bennett has one mission: manipulate Kieran’s emotions in an attempt to bring back his memory. But when she falls in love with him, she is forced to make a harrowing decision that may cost Kieran his life.
What Kieran knows could save Earth from a coming war. Whether he believes the future is worth saving is another matter. Racing across an unfamiliar world in a body he does not recall, Kieran needs to discover who he was and, more importantly, who he is.

I've read the second book of Berlin Monster from Kim Rabe. I don't think, the books are available in englisch yet. Kim Rabe is a German author. 30 years ago, myth and legends became reality after an incident . oO you have elves and ghosts, witches, werewolves, demons and otehr creatures living among humans and mythical artefacts like Excalibur or Mjölnir are now real. The main character is Lucy Wayne, a human detective, who can sense the auras of the supernatural creatures and artifacts. She gets accused of having stolen some artifacts from a museum and has to find the real culprits herself, because no one believes her. SHe find out that this is about more, than a simple heist.
I liek the books, they are perfect for people who like urban fantasy in the style of Rivers of London.

The Revelations are over and the war to end all wars has begun. The plot by the Galactic Union’s Mercenary Guild against the Four Horsemen has culminated in an invasion of Earth. Faced with an overwhelming force, the Human mercs had no choice. They’ve fled, leaving Sansar Enkh to go to the Mercenary Guild headquarters on Capital Planet to stand trial for humanity. On the run, Jim Cartwright and Nigel Shirazi have travelled to the Winged Hussars’ secret base of New Warsaw, in an effort to convince Alexis Cromwell to join the fight, while the other mercenaries who escaped the fall of Earth have gone to the perceived safe haven of Karma. Alexis Cromwell is reluctant to commit to an unwinnable fight, though, and there is no safety to be found in Karma. When the Mercenary Guild Tribunal is revealed to be a sham, the Horsemen are forced to choose—is it better to hide and protect the Human race, or is it time to fight for what they believe in? All is not as it seems, though, and the galaxy stands poised on the brink of a second Great Galactic War. Vastly outnumbered, the Four Horsemen had better come up with a stellar plan, or for them, it might well be A Fiery Sunset.

The protagonist is a bit much of a pretty princess and things come a bit too easily for her at times. But the potential love interests are good and there is an obvious one, but will he be the one in the end? Also, will she ever win the battle to stop wearing pink?

I had... mixed feelings about Brandon Sanderson's Wheel of Time books. Having to finish someone elses epic fantasy series, especially one of the most well-respected fantasy authors out there, had to have been an extremely tough position. And Sanderson did an adequate job. I didn't think it was terrible, but it wasn't great either. So even though I don't fault him for the WoT books, I've never been especially keen on trying out any of Sanderson's own books either, even though the critica/reader reception seems to be overwhelmingly positive. So I'd be interested to hear what you think of the series as you go, maybe can convince me to give him a shot.

I`m rereading The Dragon Reborn by Robert Jordan. One of my favorite books in the WoT series. And its where the story really starts gaining steam, imo. So when I do a WoT re-read, I often will skip the first 2 and begin with Dragon Reborn. Nothing against the first two, especially Eye of the World, but that's about 1500 pages of mostly laying the groundwork and so can be sort of laborious to re-read when you've already read them a few times.

The Way of Kings - Brandon Sanderson This was the first novel I bought for Kindle. He’d finished TWoT satisfactorily and wanted another big book to sink my teeth into. It didn’t grab me, way back when. Liked the ghost armour/weapons and the world building was incredible, but something felt…off. Finished my previous book a while back and didn’t find anything that snatched my attention, so decided to give it another shot. So far, so good. Just into part 2. I had... mixed feelings about Brandon Sanderson's Wheel of Time books. For sure - by 'satisfactorily' - I basically meant my views on the last three books seem to be the same as yours. They were 'good enough'. Like you say - a very tough job to take on. Especially when The Eye of the World is why Sanderson became a fantasy writer to begin with. He was a fan well before he was a replacement. Separating that part of himself out of the work would have been very difficult, I would have thought. The Way of Kings is a big book, but still progressing and still enjoying it. I was a little annoyed at myself, though, because I worked out that I stopped reading the first time literally a couple of chapters before things start to kick off

For a long time, it was my favourite in the series (hence my username). It wasn't until the much later books started to reveal things that 4 & 5 began to rise in the ranks.

For a long time, it was my favourite in the series (hence my username). It wasn't until the much later books started to reveal things that 4 & 5 began to rise in the ranks. Its interesting, for a lot of fandom communities, there's a clear consensus about things like which is the best book/album/etc. Mars Volta fans will almost unanimously tell you Deloused or Frances are the best TMV albums, with Cassandra Gemini a clear favorite for best song. Tool fans agree Lateralus is the best album. ASOIAF fans tend to agree that Storm of Swords (book 3) is the best book in the series. But from what I gather, WoT fans seem to have a really wide range of opinions on which books are the best or worst in the series: For me, Lord of Chaos is my absolute favorite. I've read it maybe twice as many times as any other books in the series, sometimes I'll just read Lord of Chaos by itself without reading any of the previous/subsequent WoT books. The whole sequence with Rand getting kidnapped by Elaida's faction of Aes Sedai -> Rand getting freed/rescued by the Aiel/Ashaman, the first reveal of just how powerful and dangerous Taim has already turned the Ashaman into is absolutely awesome, easily my favorite sequence in the entire series. Gves me goosebumps/chills every single time I read it.
