Back to Chuck Dixon's Bad Times series: They travel to the past to save the future. To fix a man-made paradox that threatens to alter mankind’s destiny forever, the Rangers must defy the legions of Rome at the height of their power. Their mission is to rescue one man from slavery in order to free the world. An adventure that spans two millennia takes them from the days of the Caesars to the siege of a city in the path of total war to a nightmare world of a possible future in which civilization is reduced to an anthill.
It all comes down to them as they become Avenging Angels.
The third entry in Chuck Dixon's celebrated time travel adventure series Bad Times! The Rangers travel back in time through the Tauber Tube to Roman era Judea to save a man who will change the world for the better with his presence and for the worse with his absence! Their most intense, bloodiest and momentous adventure yet!

Just finished and I really enjoyed it, good story, good characters/races. Just started the second book. So finished the second book "Eyes of The Void" definitely a good as the first one, more characters added to the line up which is a bit of a struggle for my poor memory but a lot more development of characters, factions etc. I struggled to find long lengths of time to read it which meant little bits here and there so I feel "I" didn't do it justice but it was still a very good read. Already started the 3rd book. Finished the third book of the Final Architecture Series and would wholly recommend the series, thoroughly enjoyed it but i just wish I had been able to spend longer stretches of time with it especially at the end. It is a series I will definitely re read it has a good story, good characters and is interesting and had a ME feel to some of it. I think he has probably set it up for another trilogy.

Trying out a cyberpunk series: The Singularity is Coming! The 22nd century brings an era of technological wonders—and horrors. Cybernetics and genetic engineering. Mass surveillance and social credit. Full body cyborgs and nanoscale engineering. And the pinnacle of human achievement: machine intelligence.
Edenet is the next generation of the Internet. Designed by Anatol Corporation, it will bring the power of a supercomputer to the fingertips of every user, anywhere in the world. At the heart of Edenet lies a cutting-edge artificial intelligence that regulates all traffic on the network.
And one of its lead scientists has disappeared.
Fearing the worst, Anatol hires psychic contractor James Morgan to track her down. Accompanying him is Eligia Ogrod, the mysterious assistant to Anatol’s CEO. Their investigation takes them through the militarized streets of Warsaw, a corporate fortress in Shenzhen, and the human hives of Hong Kong.
Morgan is no stranger to intrigue. Yet the deeper he digs, the more questions emerge. Who is Eligia Ogrod? What does Anatol want?
And what is the truth behind Edenet?

Sometimes you'll find a book by accident and then it turns out to be awesome. Here's the accident: My old LotR books fell into pieces and I decided to buy a new one volume edition. That turned out to be unreadable, because of its weight. So I bought a boxed set containing the three separate titles. In that set was a fourth book. Here's why that was awesome: That fourth book was "The Lord of the Rings: A Reader's Companion" by Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull. This book contains entries ordered by the LotR page number and entries are not ordered alphabetically. If you want to know something about a subject or a phrase on a page of the LotR then you look up the LotR page number in their book. You'll be amazed what you can find there. From background information and trivia to explanations of archaic words. Sometimes entries contain a single line, but others can be more than a page. When required the entries also show the source of the information and the page numbers in those sources. Those can refer to sources of Tolkien, his son Christopher, or other scholars. Obviously, it is not a book that you read from start to finish. Instead, I keep it somewhere close when I am reading the LotR. The page number order is handy, because it is easier to find a page number than a phrase, word or name. The companion is also available separately. And yes, most modern LotR editions have "standardized" page numbers, so it most likely works with your hardback edition. Some versions of the three volume edition of the LotR have page numbers, which start at 1 in each volume. Other three volume versions use the page numbering of the one volume edition. Both are supported. If the page numbers are off then the page numbers are still very close to your page numbers. This can happen, because the publisher made booboos in some editions of the LotR and old editions of the LotR may have a different word count. Pocketbook editions of the LotR, may have much larger differences for obvious reasons, but even then it is useful, because it was written in the sequence in which the LotR was written. Of course the Reader's Companion has an alphabetical index of its own, to find stuff in the companion itself. In addition it has a couple of chapters, which contain more general background information. All those make finding stuff easier for you. If you rather have a regular index then these two authors are also responsible for additional entries in the index of the modern LotR titles. I have 3 different editions of the LotR and all use their index at the back of the books.

Just started listening to Eyes of the Void...Sophie Aldred does an amazing job with the characters. Tchaikovsky really is the best at writing alien aliens and creating authentic worlds. There's a kind of poetry to the way he writes few other authors replicate in Sci-Fi and Fantasy...that I find very appealing. I usually hate to throw labels like genius around but I really think he is one. Damn, I wish I could write like he does. Plus, I can't help but smile every time I hear "“Angels of Punching You in the Face."

I'd be interested in how the voicing of Kit the Hannilabra is as I can never quite get it clear in my head? And the Essiel that must actually be quite hysterical!!! It's hard to pick a favourite race or character they are all so good and yeah that saying “Angels of Punching You in the Face." is brilliant EDIT 3 July: wonder if the whole Parthenon thing was influenced by the Asari if he was aware of MET? I also can't help but imaging Havaer as being Mordin Solus. I really need to read them all again as my reading of them was really disjointed. q5tyhj I think you'd really enjoy these books.

q5tyhj I think you'd really enjoy these books. This is Adrian Tchaikovsky's Final Architect series? From reading the blurb on the Wiki page, I'd say you're right. And I'm sort of finding my current book ("After the Revolution" by Robert Evans) a bit slow to get going, so I'll take a look and see what the kindle price is for book 1. And thanks for the rec.

Kit is great...they have a mechanical sing-song voice that is delivered unevenly...like the translation software is not quite in sync. I'm not sure about the Essiel or at least I can't remember well...don't they use subordinate races to speak for them? I don't think the Parthenon are an Asari thing though I can see the comparison. I actually have a similar concept to them in one of my own stories I'm trying to develop...but it's more from the standpoint of just how wrong that could go...pretty much all the fears of the Hugh toward the Parthenon in actuality. I could see how with someone voicing it for you Havaer could end up sounding like Mordin. Alas, he's played pretty straight...typical agent man. Still well delivered and it works for his character. Probably the best is Delegate Trine who sounds like Julia Childs...and Olli comes across every bit as onery as she is...wish I had a mechanized scorpion to wreck things with. I think Kris is probably my favorite...character-wise I mean...mainly because I love the whole metaphorical aspect between dueling and legal arguments. That was very cleverly done. I'm with you though, I really have to reread/listen - much as I had to with the Children of Time novels. I have to wait for my next Audible credit to drop so I go through again before listening to the 3rd book.

Yeah favourite character is tough between Olli, Kris and Solace for me and if I had to pick one probably Kris. Re the Essiel they (well the Hook and The Scythe ?) use a Hiver to Translate but it says the make like weird farting and belching noises IIRC. I don't know if I have ever seen Julia Child but I did a search is it the Chef? If that's what Trine sounds like it'd be pretty funny.

I've always had trouble reading "the Silmarillion". My problem is that it is hard for me to concentrate, because several parts don't "click" with me. Two weeks ago "the Silmarillion" was released as an audio book, read by Andy Serkis. People seem to like it, so I wanted to give it a try. And wow! That audio book makes a difference, especially when I read the paper version at the same time. Andy Serkis is not only a great actor, he is also an awesome voice actor, who makes the book come alive.

Finally getting around to something I've meant to for a bit.
My personal favourite series, the Prince of Nothing by R. Scott Bakker, has a 4 book conclusion. After rereading as far as I got last time, I'm now starting the last book, "The Unholy Consult." Slow going, I don't read as much anymore and my views have changed in the 20odd years since I started, but it's still compelling. Also has a sense of humour that hits well, out-of-nowhere makes you chuckle. Or in one case shake my head in mutual horror/laughter/guffaw. Sonofabitch teed it up for half the book then drops it on you. Rereading the first trilogy is still an experience too. I also appreciate that the author's consistently teaching me new interesting words and ways to use them. He's the reason 'inchoate' is grafted into my brain. (Sanderson put 'Apricity' on the map for me.)
I am entirely intrigued how he ends this. There's more going on underneath than I can understand, and I'm curious to see the overall payoff. In a different life I would've loved moving east and taking courses from him. I read his first trilogy at an impressionable time and the ideologies behind a lot of what goes on have formed a backbone for further concepts. Similar to how a lot of my friends started looking at the world a bit differently after seeing The Matrix in theatres.

Had a pop up as a recommendation to read: Sarah Stone Complete Quadrilogy. I have read mostly books with a male protagonist so thought I'd give these a go as they had a female one and so far the first one has been pretty good. "Sarah Stone. Left for dead. Disfigured. Angry. Get all 4 books today! BOOK 1: SOFT TARGET Nowhere is safe from evil... When an elderly suicide bomber strikes a quiet English village, a once proud nation is brought to its knees. Yet this first attack is just the start of something far greater and much much worse. The days to follow will determine if the United Kingdom has a future, or if it will be reduced to anarchy and ashes. Only one person has a chance to halt the impending terror attacks: damaged ex-solider, Captain Sarah Stone. Sarah despises her own country for what it did to her, and that’s what makes it so hard when she is forced to save it, but when an old enemy takes credit for the attacks, her thirst for vengeance forces her to take action."

[iframe title="YouTube video player" width="560" height="349" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/oT4z2iZIOuA?wmode=transparent&start=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="1"][/iframe] Yep, the chef...over the top just like Julia. Yeah, the Hiver performance doesn't capture those sounds...be pretty tough to do and sell...but amusing nonetheless...more high pitch and squeaky and of course synthetic sounding. I started doing audiobooks back in 2019 with The Wheel of Time...more as a trial thing than anything else...and I haven't looked back. Aside from really bringing life to these stories I'm able to listen while commuting and working and generally doing everything else that makes actually reading impossible (plus I get tired eyes really quickly trying to read anymore). The cost only ends up being a little bit more than a soft cover (cheaper than a hard cover) with a membership and occasionally audible will run sales for members...I ended up getting half the Expeditionary Force series for like 5$ per at a time I was debating whether I even wanted to continue the series which is simultaneously great and frustrating. I would say you have to be somewhat discriminatory on how to spend credits as there are limits placed on the number of returns per year...maybe 2 or 3 per. If you haven't really done the audiobook thing and want to try I'd start with stories you love to return to. Anyway that's my spiel on the joys of listening.

Yes, a good actor/voice actor/narrator makes a universe of difference! Couldn't agree more! I've tried to start some audio books of various titles (most recently the X-Wing series) and the reader was so monotonous, I turned it off ln 5 seconds flat. Like that dude with the glasses, ugh, what'shisface..... You know "Buehler. Buehler. Buehler." Like that level of monotony. Then switch gears and you hear or see something like Shakespeare (which I dispise and loathe) read or acted by someone the likes of James Earl Jones or the late, great Christopher Plummer....and the performance comes alive. You actually understand the characters and what is happening, and why. When it is done to that caliber, I actually find myself enjoying shakespeare (though I will deny it if anyone questions me).

Test-reading this for my niece to see if it's age-appropriate for her (she's a voracious reader) Supposed to be a sort of "harry Potter for girls" series Roanoke Academy for the Sorcerous Arts – A magic school like no other! On her first day of school, Rachel Griffin discovers her perfect memory allows her to see through the spell sorcerers use to hide their secrets. Very soon, she discovers that there is a far-vaster secret world hiding from the Wise in precisely the same manner that the magical folk hide from the mundane folk. When someone tries to kill a fellow student, she investigates. Rushing forward where others fear to tread, Rachel bravely faces wraiths, embarrassing magical pranks, mysterious older boys, a Raven that brings the doom of worlds, and at least one fire-breathing teacher. Described by fans as: "Lovecraft meets Narnia at Hogwarts", The Unexpected Enlightenment of Rachel Griffin is a tale of wonder and danger, romance and heartbreak, and, most of all, of magic and of a girl who refuses to be daunted. Curiosity may kill a cat, but nothing stops Rachel Griffin!

Not reading it yet but came across a collection of short stories by The Shadow of the Wind author Carlos Ruiz Zafon. It's called The City of Mist, and was intended to be published posthumously. I really enjoyed all 4 books in the series but liked the first one the most. Can't wait to get back to that universe for a bit.

Said niece is 8 but reads at a high school level, so finding stuff for her can be a challenge!

Just finished the 2nd book. Very good, I enjoyed a couple of the new characters that were introduced quite a bit. The more or less main protagonist annoys the hell out of me at times but at least other characters take him to task for his stupid moves so at least the authors are not one sided on the issue of his actions. Quite a cliff hanger twist at the end but one that I actually thought would happen sooner or later. On to book three.

Yeah they are good writers especially of characters, I hope you enjoy book three it is pretty great I think. I'd even recommend watching series 1 to 3 once you finish book three then start reading the books again.

Just today started reading "Foreign Influence" by Brad Thor. I've heard of him but never read any of his stuff; I'm interested to see where it goes.
