Written by an actual neurologist: What would it really take to make the Six Million Dollar Man? a medical thriller on earth and in space!
Glenn Armstrong Shepard had his sights set on going to Mars as a flight surgeon, but a training accident on the Moon left him crippled. Now he has a new plan: to be fitted with bionic prosthetics and come back even stronger.
Fate and the Space Force have other plans, and Glenn is grounded. Another doctor—his ex-fiancée—takes his place, and Glenn will have to fight to prove he can be an astronaut once more. . . .

I don't necessarily agree with everything, but this book is quite thought provoking.

Decent enough military sci-fi at times cleverly woven together. Some of the naming conventions and aliens are pretty goofy but it has good characters and battle sequences. R.C. Bray's performance really helps it though the source material doesn't take advantage of his skill as a narrator as Expeditionary Force provided. Still worth a listen if your starved for this type of genre and have some Audible credits to spend. The first four parts (excluding prequel books) each include two books...giving it better value.

So I started a new book by the same author and the contrast for me was the polar opposite, I was hooked from the first two pages and had to force myself to stop reading and go to bed. The book is the first in a series of I think three books. "The war is over. Its heroes forgotten. Until one chance discovery . . . Idris has neither aged nor slept since they remade him in the war. And one of humanity's heroes now scrapes by on a freelance salvage vessel, to avoid the attention of greater powers. After earth was destroyed, mankind created a fighting elite to save their species, enhanced humans such as Idris. In the silence of space they could communicate, mind-to-mind, with the enemy. Then their alien aggressors, the Architects, simply disappeared—and Idris and his kind became obsolete. Now, fifty years later, Idris and his crew have discovered something strange abandoned in space. It's clearly the work of the Architects—but are they returning? And if so, why? Hunted by gangsters, cults and governments, Idris and his crew race across the galaxy hunting for answers. For they now possess something of incalculable value, that many would kill to obtain." Just finished and I really enjoyed it, good story, good characters/races. Just started the second book.

Peacemakers. The Galactic Union’s most capable enforcers and resolute negotiators, their name alone elicits fear and awe among the Union’s citizenry.
While the occupation of Earth continues, MinSha mercenaries under the command of Major General Drehnayl have assaulted Human-held colonies in the outer rim, wiping them out completely. With the famed Four Horsemen nowhere to be found, the Mercenary Guild’s attempt to instill fear and subvert humanity is perilously close to reality. Tasked with finding the MinSha is Jessica Francis, Earth’s first Peacemaker, but the odds aren’t in her favor. Racing against time, Jessica realizes that finding Drehnayl's forces isn’t enough—she must do something to stop their atrocities and end their reign of terror.
Upon locating the MinSha fleet, Jessica faces down Drehnayl’s armada with a band of heroes both hopelessly outmanned and under-equipped on the binary planet Victoria Bravo. Her decision made, and with MinSha Lieutenant Colonel Tirr and the near-AI Lucille at her side, Jessica charges into battle intent on stopping Drehnayl once and for all…or to die trying. A Peacemaker must set the terms, honor the threat, and know when to stand or fall. For Jessica and her friends, that time is now.

This has been on my to-read list for a while: When he came home, so did they...
Driven by vengeance, Michael Alexander enlisted in the Army the day after 9/11. Five years later, disillusioned and broken by the horrors he witnessed in Afghanistan, Michael returns home to Georgia seeking to begin a new life. But he didn't come alone. Something evil followed him, and it's leaving a path of destruction in its wake.
The police are powerless. The Army has written Michael off. Left to face down a malevolent creature first encountered in the mountains of Afghanistan, he'll rely on his training, a homeless prophet, and estranged family members from a love lost...
But none of them expected the dragon.

I just finished this: I thought it was very good, a dreary Victorian gothic tale, more downers than uppers in the book. Almost a ghost story. The reason I say almost is that the author whether skillfully on purpose or just by her natural writing style set scenes where there appeared to be ghosts at times but, the characters seeing them were the non credible people in the book (half mad or insane or very very young). The characters you basically trusted never saw the ghost but saw others acting as if they had seen ghosts. It is the only full length novel this Bronte sister wrote.

The books are definitely better than the TV show but only because they are deeper and give more insight into the characters.

From the author of the Full Metal Superhero series, which I liked: The wrong crew. The wrong ship. The right Captain.
Idealistic navy lieutenant Jacob Grimm just wanted to honor his mother’s sacrifice in the last great war. When he’s forced to return fire and destroy a squadron of ships to save his own, he thinks he’s the hero…
Until they discover the ships are full of children.
Disgraced and denied promotion, Jacob’s career is over. That is until the head of ONI needs a disposable officer to command a battered destroyer on the rim.
There’s just one problem, Interceptor hasn’t had a CO in months and the ship is a mess. Worse, the system he’s assigned to is corrupt and on the verge of all-out civil war with the Alliance.
However, no one told Jacob he was disposable.
Pirates, smugglers, and Caliphate spies complicate the situation and one captain with an old ship can’t enforce the law, let alone stop anyone.
The single greatest discovery of all time is about to change intergalactic politics forever. If Jacob doesn’t find a way to succeed, then it won’t just be the end of the Alliance, it will be the end of freedom for humanity.

I started reading "the LotR" in 1970, followed by "the Hobbit". Yep. I am that old. And since then I've read them many times, until they fell apart. I started with the Dutch versions, but later on I read the English versions. This time I am reading "The Annotated Hobbit". It is printed using two columns per page. The wide column contains Tolkien's "The Hobbit" and a narrow column has Douglas A. Anderson's annotations using a smaller font size. And the annotations are often on the same page or close nearby, which I think is handy. I love reading Anderson's comments. It adds an extra dimension and makes Tolkien a bit more human. The very first annotation is a lengthy one about the usage of the words "dwarves" and "dwarvish", consistently used by Tolkien. Tolkien admitted that these were initially errors, but it was too late to correct them. Being a philologist one would expect him to change them, but instead he decided to cover it up by dreaming up a rationalization for its usage at the start of his book. In a letter he wrote "I am afraid it is just a piece of private bad grammar, rather shocking in a philologist". Of course to those who later pointed out that "dwarfs" was really the correct term, he could correct them again, because the real historical plural is "dwarrows". And who could really argue with him? After all, I know that he worked on the "Oxford English Dictionary". There are some color illustrations made by Tolkien and various others. And there are many black and white ones, but a lot of those have a poor print quality. They are almost as bad as old photocopies. Still, I like that these are scattered all around the book and they clearly illustrate the points made. If you want to re-read "the Hobbit" then this book is awesome. I would not recommend it as a first read, because it would be too confusing. I love it.

Just finished and I really enjoyed it, good story, good characters/races. Just started the second book. So finished the second book "Eyes of The Void" definitely a good as the first one, more characters added to the line up which is a bit of a struggle for my poor memory but a lot more development of characters, factions etc. I struggled to find long lengths of time to read it which meant little bits here and there so I feel "I" didn't do it justice but it was still a very good read. Already started the 3rd book.

So Brent Weeks is coming back to The Night Angel....and this fourth book appears to be partly written in tradtional 3rd person when writing secondary characters....But then chapters that focus on the main protaginist are written in 1st Person...and I cant stand First Person writing.
Gives me the creeps! So Im having HUGE second thoughts about buying this book!

I plan on reading all the books before I do the tv series. Very sensible, some of the books were better than the TV series version of them IMO especially book four. Lot's of changes in the TV series (some very good and some a bit confusing) in particular the number of characters in the books was made less in the TV series with some characters and their stories merged to save money etc. Read the Novellas as you read the books, they are often a microscope into parts of a book or a character. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Expanse_(novel_series)

My next Year of Sanderson book arrived today: m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51OWQxQS03L.jpgA man awakens in a clearing in what appears to be medieval England with no memory of who he is, where he came from, or why he is there. Chased by a group from his own time, his sole hope for survival lies in regaining his missing memories, making allies among the locals, and perhaps even trusting in their superstitious boasts. His only help from the "real world" should have been a guidebook entitled The Frugal Wizard's Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, except his copy exploded during transit. The few fragments he managed to save provide clues to his situation, but can he figure them out in time to survive?
