Meditations by Marcus Aurelius (Philosophy Classic version), and loving it.
Stoicism is pretty straightforward and reflected in any modern morality worth a damn, secular or otherwise, so the philosophy itself isn't a huge shock on any level. But the clarity and attentiveness it's written with is beautiful and soul-centering, and delving into the mind of a Roman Emperor with that level of rationality and compassion 1600 years before the Enlightenment is kind of inherently faith-in-humanity-raising, if that makes sense?
"Begin the morning by saying to yourself, I shall meet with the busy-body, the ungrateful, arrogant, deceitful, envious, unsocial. All these things happen to them by reason of their ignorance of what is good and evil. But I who have seen the nature of the good that it is beautiful, and of the bad that it is ugly, and the nature of him who does wrong, that it is akin to me, not only of the same blood or seed, but that it participates in the same intelligence and the same portion of the divinity, I can neither be injured by any of them, for no one can fix on me what is ugly, nor can I be angry with my kinsman, nor hate him. For we are made for cooperation, like feet, like hands, like eyelids, like the rows of the upper and lower teeth. To act against one another then is contrary to nature, and it is acting against one another to be vexed and turn away."

When a duke and his family are butchered in their sleep, a beleaguered king commands his brother Rellen to uncover not only who committed the heinous murders but why. Was it sedition? Political assassination? Or is it the gruesome machinations of a blood-hungry demon goddess and her cult?
Like fighting a hydra, every riddle Rellen solves exposes two more. The investigation quickly mutates into something far more sinister. As ancient artifacts, secret organizations, and hidden mysteries creep in at every turn, he sinks deeper and deeper into a foreboding conspiracy that threatens everything he knows.
Always one step behind, Rellen desperately chases one clue after another. To his growing horror, he realizes the duke’s murder was only the latest piece of a far-reaching legacy of deceit spanning centuries—perhaps even millennia—and the entire kingdom has been taken in by lies.
Once exposed, the terrible truth will be far more than anyone bargained for.The "Legacy of Shadows" storyline read like a sword& sorcery adventure series. This one, the "Legacy of Deceit" is more like a police procedural. With magic. Interesting given they share a setting.

Firefall by Peter Watts. Which is a combined release of his novels Blindsight and Echopraxia. It took me an embarrassingly long time to notice that one character has several personalities 😅 I'm on the second novel now.
Crazy sci-fi stuff and dystopian transhumanism.

Please explain for the simple Aussie? Obviously the guy's last name is Jordaan and not the Mass Effect race Jardaan. I thought the word play was funny. And a "pikketanussie" is ancient Amsterdam slang for Jenever, which is the forerunner of gin. The guy sings that he doesn't like all those modern drinks and thinks a pikketanussie is still best. And because N7 day is supposed be a festivity the clip shows a typical old fashioned Dutch carnival (which raised at least one of my eyebrows). I hope I am not making it too complicated. Edit: mousestalker's love for the Alpenzusjes inspired me to post this song. And obviously, I posted this in the wrong thread.

Sorry about the posts above. The thread names are very similar. Anyway... This time it is about "The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien", published in 1981 and the "Revised and Expanded Edition" of that book, published the 9th of November 2023. The letters are edited by Tolkien's biographer Humphrey Carpenter. Tolkien's son Christopher Tolkien helped him with it. Although Tolkien enjoys calligraphy, he also is known for his horrible handwriting. His son was possibly of great help to decipher his father's scribbles. Tolkien is a great writer and it not only shows in his books, but also in his letters. These letters are valuable when you want to know more about him, his family, his work and his books. Back in the day the publisher didn't want to take a great risk, so Humphrey and Christoper were asked to bring down the number of pages. Now that his letters are proven to sell well, the publisher restored the original manuscript to its full length and corrected some known errors. Each letter is identified by a number. The letters are an important resource for scholars and fans alike and changing those numbers would create chaos. The letters are sorted by the date of writing and the new letters are inserted by concatenating an alphabetic character to the number. For an example three letters were inserted between #42 and #43. These new ones are referenced as "#42a", "#42b", and "#42c". There are 154 new letters added this way. Also, some existing letters, which were shortened in the original, now have been restored to their full length. These changes caused the book to grow from 463 pages in the original hardcover to 708 pages in the new hardcover edition. I originally wanted the hardcover version, but it was hard to get, so I settled for the paperback. I rather have a hardback, because such a book will be used more frequently as a reference book than a normal book. Soon after I got it, the new edition was announced and I pre-ordered both the hardcover and the e-book. I like the e-book version, because it allows searching topics easily. But I still find the hardcover nice to browse. I don't like all letters, though. Letter #43 is a very long one to his son Michael. It is about how Tolkien views relationships and marriage. Tolkien's view of women is not only old fashioned, it is bizarre. I don't even dare to go into details. Review by the Nerd of the Rings. The older paperback. The newest hardcover.

I read Fade, the first book in the series a few months back. SO I went and got the next two books: Paxton got the crap kicked out of him foiling his mother's plans. But even that isn't enough to keep him in one place. With his new partner (don't call her a sidekick!) at his side, Paxton heads to Arizona to help an old friend with a supernatural murder problem.
But Mother is on the loose and not content to lay low after escaping prison. She's got a brand-new coven and wants her grimoire back. Nothing will stop her from recovering her book of spells—not her son or the ancient evil stirring from its sleep in the Valley of the Sun.
Paxton's faced witches, ghosts, and shadow demons, but can he handle something far worse? He can't afford to back down with the lives of two kidnapped boys hanging in the balance.
Harry Dresden's sorcery goes on a Supernatural-style road trip. Cool car sold separately.Paxton Locke's been in some pretty tight spaces before. This one might be the worst.
Drugged and shipped to who-knows-where on an airplane, he finds himself in a mysterious prison, locked up by men who seem to be Feds. But they haven't given him his phone call, and Pax is pretty sure his cellmates aren't even human.
His magic is useless, but he needs to find a way to escape. Mother has his girlfriend and wants a repeat of the night she killed Paxton's father. But this time, she won't be interrupted. Somehow, Paxton has to stop her.
Or the world might end.
Apocalyptic visions from Mother's grimoire have haunted him for years. Now she's close to making those dreams a reality. And all Paxton can do is wait in his cell for someone to realize he's not the bad guy.

“A noted explorer once asked, ‘Who knows if there are secrets lurking in the unseen corners of hyperspace?’ The answer is simple. There are!” — Colonel Terrance Van Zant, Commanding Officer, Swamp Eagle Security
Taylor Van Zant has a lot on his mind.
Like everyone in Jacksonville, North Florida, the early-twenties bartender from Riverside saw his world upended when his brother, Terry, an interstellar mercenary and local hero, died suddenly in a freak starship accident. Five years later, having been stonewalled for answers, Taylor faced a choice: Honor his mother’s wish that he never go merc or defy it to save her life by resurrecting Terry’s company.
That was thirteen months ago. Now the newly reformed Eagles stand on the verge of a major milestone: owning their own flagship. There’s just one problem. Terry left behind a ship that no one knew about, a rare breed of cruiser with a most peculiar secret.
"Free Bird Rising” is the story of a young man’s quest for justice and to escape his brother’s shadow. The shocking revelations he finds, though, will likely rock the Galactic Union to its core and get him killed.

Just finished reading the first three books of a series called "Homeworld Lost" by J.N. Chaney and Scott Moon This is the blurb for the first book: "During a test flight for the world’s first warp engine, Major Noah Gantz is set to go down in the history books. Despite years of training, the mission goes sideways, and instead of a quick trip to the moon and back, Noah's ship is transported across the universe to stars unknown. Stranded in space and on the brink of death, Noah is rescued by a sentient starship and its captain. To save his life, the ship’s own biomatter must replace his failing cells. Now , Noah is different. Stronger, faster… and there’s a voice in his head. The voice of the ship itself, and its name is Kayan. With no way to return home, Noah must adapt and rebuild his life in this unfamiliar corner of the universe. And as he does, he discovers a looming threat in the far reaches of space, growing in power, and set on capturing Noah and his ship. Worse still, this new enemy knows about Earth. . . and it has big plans." They are an easy and enjoyable read but the main character's personality irked me for a while. The "Live Ship" is great. Some outcomes in the books are kind of too easy like the authors were rushing.
I am trying to decide whether I am up for reading the next two, probably will but need to see what they are being offered for on Kindle.
So turns out after finishing the first three of these books there was not two more but four so seven in total, the sixth of which I have just started. They have been overall "good", but I have been reading them sporadically so not getting through them as fast as I would normally. That said I made a concerted effort to knock book five over thinking it would be the last but to my surprise it was not. Now making a concerted effort to knock book six and seven over as I really want to read something else, in particular a couple of sequels in other series. So in short I have enjoyed the ongoing story of Noah Gantz and the live ship Kayan and the rest of the crew, they are a good bunch of characters with an interesting overall story. Looking forward to moving on.

just could nt leave "Premier sang" unifinished last night. Translated as "first blood" from Amélie Nothomb. Extradordinary book yet again ! , superb settings, nice construction, and most important, very good and interesting narrator's story. Notably again some top scenes i should not forget. I m lucky with books lately, only 5/5s, but my last ten were carefully handpicked by an aunt If you never read some of her work, she s regularly translated, "Fear and Trembling" is really recommended especially if you like the japanese culture. Loving Sabotage is also mentionned a lot.

From the halls of Montezuma....
Former Marine Captain Alexander Hale only wanted a weekend out with some old buddies. He could have done without the gang war, the shootout, and... oh yeah, the alien abduction.
Now he's in the middle of something he doesn't understand, never asked for, and is having quite possibly the greatest time of his life. Semper Fi and which way are the shores of Tripoli anyway?

Sword and sorcery book inspired by Hannibal and the Punic Wars: A VAST EMPIRE'S GREATEST FOE. A CONQUERED PEOPLE'S LAST HOPE. HIS NAME IS HANUVAR, AND HE WILL SET HIS PEOPLE FREE!
The Dervan Empire has at last triumphed over Volanus, putting the great city to the torch, its treasures looted, temples defiled, and fields sown with salt. What little remains of Volanus is scattered across the empire, its wealth plundered and its survivors sold into slavery. It is an absolute victory for the Dervans in every way but one.
Hanuvar, last and greatest general of Volanus, still lives. He now travels the length of the Dervan Empire that conquered his homeland, driven by a singular purpose—to find what remains of his people who were carried into slavery across the empire, and free them from subjugation by any means necessary.
Against the might of a vast empire, he had only an aging sword arm, a lifetime of hard-won wisdom, and the greatest military mind in the world, set upon a single goal. No matter what the empire musters against him, no matter what man or monster stands in his way, from the empire’s festering capital to its furthest outposts, Hanuvar would find his people, every last one of them.
And he would set them free.

Also listening to this: He was born to greatness, the son of a druid bard and a princess of lost Atlantis. A trained warrior, blessed with the gifts of prophecy and song, he grew to manhood in a land ravaged by the brutal greed of petty chieftains and barbarian invaders.
MERLIN: Respected, feared and hated by many, he was to have a higher destiny. For it was he who prepared the way for the momentous event that would unite the Island of the Mighty--the coming of Arthur Pendragon, Lord of the Kingdom of Summer

Again, I am visiting the Hobbit. 75 years after its release (in 2013) a conference was held at the Valparaiso University, which coincided with the release of the first Hobbit movie. However, the movies were not the focus. The subject was "Celebrating the Hobbit". The book which covered this is called "The Hobbit and Tolkien's Mythology - Essays on Revisions and Influences", edited by Bradford Lee Eden. It was released in 2014 and this paperback has 236 pages. The number of pages doesn't say much, because the book is much larger than the typical paperback and the font is relatively small and it has no illustrations. That means that it has more content then you would expect. That also makes up for twice the price of a typical paperback. There is a long list of Tolkien scholars who contributed their essays. Not only John D. Rateliff and Verlyn Flieger are well known and respected, the others too provided some excellent texts. The contents below provides the descriptions of the topics. Contents - "Introduction" by Bradford Lee Eden
Part I - The Evolution of the Dwarven Race - "Anchoring the Myth: The Impact of The Hobbit on Tolkien's Legendarium" by John D. Rateliff
- "From Nauglath to Durin's Folk: The Hobbit and Tolkien's Dwarves" by Gerard Hynes
Part II - Durin's Day - "'It passes our skill in these days': Primary World Influences on the Evolution of Durin's Day" by Kristine Larsen
- "A Scientific Examination of Durin's Day" by Sumner Gary Hunnewell

Welp, other than short stories that's that for Abercrombie. From First Law to Age of Madness. Now I'm thinking I'm going to reread Julian May's Boreal Moon trilogy. Read the first book so long ago I could not even tell you what it about but even as a huge Julian May fan I didn't finish the trilogy or have lost the next two books somehow after Conquerors Moon. She has such a wonderful vocabulary. Guerdon, appurtenances, sumpter, bunch of other words I already forget again.
She also describes interesting sounding food. (Interesting sounding, not necessarily tasting.) Cod in nettle soup, herbed elk grease presumably spread on rolls/bread, shirred eggs and anchovies, coddled fish. Various tubers and reeds.
On the second book now, Ironcrown Moon.

GhostofFuckItYeah I love her as a writer and have so many of her books and have loved them but that series never grabbed me. I think I just couldn't get invested in the characters or the story. I have book one within a foot of where I sit maybe I'll re-read it in the near future as I honestly have no specific memory of it. Just that I didn't enjoy it and didn't finish the series. My favourite is The Saga of The Exiles, closely followed by The Galactic Milieu books but mostly "Intervention" and because they tie into the Saga of The Exiles.
