GhostofFuckIt Yeah I love her as a writer and have so many of her books and have loved them but that series never grabbed me. I think I just couldn't get invested in the characters or the story. I have book one within a foot of where I sit maybe I'll re-read it in the near future as I honestly have no specific memory of it. Just that I didn't enjoy it and didn't finish the series. My favourite is The Saga of The Exiles, closely followed by The Galactic Milieu books but mostly "Intervention" and because they tie into the Saga of The Exiles. Funnily enough it's the only thing of her's I've read.
Might have to try out another of her series but I think I'm going to tackle one of Sanderson's newer releases after this trilogy.

The clouds of war continue to build…and not everyone is blind… Bjorn Tovesson III, the owner of Bjorn’s Berserkers, is a man tied to the past, but who’s not afraid to innovate. Whether it is new tactics or new equipment, Bjorn is willing to try anything, once, in an effort to grow his company into the status of the fabled Four Horsemen.
Looking to the future with his eyes open, though, he has seen a series of unfortunate occurrences running through the ranks of Earth’s mercenaries. Companies in financial troubles, some taking huge losses on contracts…and others not returning from their contracts at all.
His father always taught him to prepare, and Bjorn is working to diversify his operations, including moving the company to a planet with a sizable portion of aliens who are already members of the Galactic Union. Nothing bad could happen to them there, right?
But as the storm clouds continue to gather, his past is on a collision course with the present, as another of Earth’s mercenary companies is out to get him…and with the support of the Mercenary Guild, they have the forces to overwhelm him! Will Bjorn’s preparations keep the Berserkers safe, or will they become yet another unfortunate occurrence?

Game of Thrones meets Lord of the Rings in this gothic epic fantasy saga of captivating court intrigue, deadly, reigning evil, and a young queen’s determination to free an empire.
Princess Mahaela Bellagrave nearly escapes her fate as queen, but murder accelerates her ascension to the throne of Pyranon. Denying her birthright is no longer an option; she must embrace the magic she’s possessed since birth but hidden out of self-preservation.
Banu Liin, an immortal demon construct and ancient palace knight, lives on as the royal advisor. He’s ruled Pyranon through its queens and their magic for centuries. He’s hidden truths and kept the loyal kingdoms of Pyranon in the dark about life-and-death threats that imperil the mortality of every living soul on the continent.
Banu sets his trap for the new queen. He refuses to lose his long-lived and lasting power over the fiery continent of Pyranon and the reigning queen of the empire.
In a world plagued by centuries of evil possession, can a determined young queen embrace inherited magic and free Pyranon from a throne long tarnished by a deadly legacy of deceit?

Once again, I am reading a book about Tolkien's "The Hobbit". The book is called "There and Back Again: J.R.R. Tolkien and the Origins of The Hobbit" by Mark Atherton, published in 2012. The author is a lecturer in English language and literature at the University of Oxford. He is specialized in medieval languages and literature. That makes him a perfect candidate to look at "The Hobbit" from another perspective. In an interview he was asked "In a sentence or two, why should people buy this book? What makes it stand out?", to which he answered: "This book is, at present, one of only a few books dedicated to the Hobbit and its sources and inspirations, attempting to give a new perspective by starting with his earlier life and working out how he came to write his first published novel - rather than looking back with hindsight from the perspective of The Lord of the Rings. The prequel is not only a prequel; it is a story in its own right with its own particular attractions for the reader."The 306 page hardcover is illustrated with many black and white pictures and art, which compliment the content. For those who like it there is a beautiful dust cover. There is an extensive list of notes (complete with sources) and an even larger bibliography. That indicates that this book is well thought out and well researched. It is safe to say that this book is highly recommended.

They are good but it would have added some depth and nuance to the characters they portray at a relevant time.

Didn't feel like reading them after the fact either, jumped right into Boreal Moon trilogy. Probably should've but oh well. Fodder for a reread in a decade if I'm still living.
Almost done book 3 of that. Dunno what's on the plate after. But it'll have dragons or magic in it. For some strange reason I never got into reading scifi. Maybe once I've read all the good fantasy books out there I'll start. Rothfuss' third book would be a nice surprise.

Randomly, I wound up liking her Soldier Son series, but that got weird fast. Haven't read anything else by her.

Randomly, I wound up liking her Soldier Son series, but that got weird fast. Haven't read anything else by her. Yeah Soldier Son did get weird fast but I really liked it simply because for the time it was really different. She is one of my favourite authors, Farseer is a slow burn, especially the start. If you want something else that is a bit of a tough read early on but gets better, The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen Donaldson are I think very good and one of my favourite series of books. BUT it is a tough read for probably the first third of the book because of the things that happen to the main character and the things he does. It is most definitely a redemption storyline. Was it you I recommended Julian May's "Saga of The Exiles too"? Again some of my favourite books, but there is also a tie in series that is Sci Fi and it is worth at least reading the first book "Intervention" probably before but can be read after as it explains something the Saga of The Exiles that happens. It's a Sci Fi series but it is really more a story of a family that is first to develop mental abilities.

A Merry Christmas, everyone! If anyone knew the Christmas spirit best, it is Tolkien. The book is called "Letters from Father Christmas", by J.R.R. Tolkien, edited by Baillie Tolkien. This is a book that Tolkien never intended to be written. Let me explain. Each year Father Christmas wrote a letter to Tolkien's children. Tolkien went into great detail. He wrote about the adventures of the last year on the North Pole in those letters. Each child got his own unique letter. Each letter came in a envelope and both were written in beautiful handwriting and were lovely illustrated. Each envelope had its own unique stamp. Of course his children would find out if he faked the mail delivery. So he made a deal with the local post office. They accepted his hand crafted stamps and the letters were delivered to Tolkien's home by a real postman during his normal route. Talking about detail. The book was initially released in 1976 and edited by Baillie Tolkien (Christopher Tolkien's second wife). The book has been released in several editions throughout the years. The 2023 version contains all the known surviving letters. In August of this year I saw the 2019 slipcased deluxe edition at a discount and decided to buy it. I thought it was odd that the copyright page told me that it was the 2023 release, but I didn't give it much thought. A few weeks later the regular hardcover 2023 edition was announced. I could not find any announcement of the 2023 slipcased deluxe edition, official or otherwise. With the help of a gentleman on Reddit we found out that it must be the first edition of that version. The book is based on the 2020 hardcover Centenary edition (which has more content), and it is hard to distinguish it from the 2019 deluxe edition, unless you look inside the book. But the 2023 version is slightly different than the Centenary edition. To make things more complicated, we found out that there are two different 2019 slipcased deluxe editions. One is the regular 192 page version and the other is the 208 page version based on the Centenary edition. However the latter is not identical to my 2023 version, which has 208 pages as well. My version has a collage of letters and envelopes in color on the end papers, whereas the 208 page 2019 version has plain green end papers, just like the 192 page 2019 version. The content of both 208 page versions slightly differ too. And to make things even more confusing, all these versions use the same ISBN. Why the publisher, Harper Collins, thinks these are good ideas is beyond me. The deluxe 2023 version is beautiful. The cover and the slipcase are lettered in silver (in contrast to the other deluxe editions, which use gold). It has a Tolkien designed North Polar stamp glued on the slipcase. It comes with a silver bookmark ribbon. The paper and print quality are great and the pages are stitched (and not glued). The letters, envelopes and stamps are reproduced in color and also shown as text. This book is an awesome Christmas gift, but shops often use the outdated description of both the hardcover and slipcased deluxe editions. So if you are unlucky you will buy the old stock versions.

Yumi and the Nightmare Painter I liked it, loved parts, thought the ending could've been handled better though. All in all quite enjoyed it. Hoid had to do an entire exposition-dump for it all to make sense. That's a crutch I've heard Sanderson himself tell people to be wary of. His own magic-system's complexity is starting to be a hindrance. Power-creep might be a similar problem in the future. At some point it gets so abstract it becomes handwavy, bit of the ending was like that here. That's how I felt Oathbringer ended too. (One of the endings at any rate.)
Painter's realization that he could draw Liyun as Liyun was a clever, established, solution.
I had Liyun pegged as the nightmare about five seconds after he introduced her. Can't tell you how or why, just, knew it. Maybe something in his formula, he likes to establish certain things early. Regardless, he kept having her appear teary eyed without really going into why which only cemented the notion.
While Liyun had my hackles up from the first, I did not expect it all to be nightmares. That reveal was great. I did suspect that they were on the same planet when Yumi mentioned no one living in the cold zones.
The reminder that Time Travel isn't an option in the Cosmere is good too. It's always felt like the cowards way out when it comes to storytelling to me. The predecessor of the multiverse swap that's getting overused now. Thank you Sanderson for knowing exactly what I'm talking about and killing it.
On the Romance end of things, Sanderson himself knows he's not a good romance writer. As romances go it didn't do too much for me. I wasn't really judging the book by how much I liked (or didn't like) that end of things. Low expectations. It was cute, but... very Young Adultish, and enforced in some spots. His romance felt less like a burgeoning new love in their eyes, rather like he was, unsurprisingly, finding a pre-inclined wife. Given these are love-letters to his wife, the whole thing gets a pass from me. 0/0. Nothing ventured, nothing lost. But nothing really gained either.
Nuance and layers. This book nailed the concepts. Everything had dichotomy, and singular important concepts impacted the story and setting in multiple ways. I love how painting didn't work to summon those spirits, it had to be rock stacking. The similar plants but vastly different speciation. The night/day themes playing into the nightmare/waking-nightmare facets. It all worked well together.
Art was good, I liked many of the choices of when to insert a picture.
His characterization was alright, albeit not many standouts:
Masaka being a hordling or whatever they're properly called, was a nice touch. I liked Masaka as something of a refugee. Her being a younger hordling-thing was a bit of a more nuanced take too. The sweaters and always sinking into them was a bit of foreshadow I didn't see. Had no clue she was a buglady until it got stated.
Masaka and Design's similar desire to be(or at least act) human did feel a titch redundant. Flattering but, bit anthropomorphized way of thinking.
Design herself was interesting, her and Hoid bickering is something I hope we'll see more of. That'll have some entertainment-value to it to be sure. Wit works best with a foil. Design seems apt in that regard. She works both as something strong enough to stick up for itself, and something naive enough to need some blatant explanations. Their bond is a really intelligent writing device.
Tojin was unremarkable.
Akane felt like more than the glue for their social circle, rather that whole end of the plot. She kept things moving, but didn't get much to her. Nice lady though.
Izzy, uh, unremarkable.
Liyun really drew the short end of the Cosmere-Life sticks.
Painter: I started out not quite liking his character, but eventually enjoyed it. He hits a lot of tropes but Sanderson, I think he put a lot of himself into Painter. Some of his own personal failings he was relating to his wife. It gave Nikaro dimensions beyond striving against the tropes. There was a believable quality to some of what he said, when the author's voice started bleeding into the characters.
Yumi. Dunno. While I had Liyun dead-to-rights, Yumi I did not. I liked that she served as a vehicle to witness Painter's world through more than just a new visitors set of eyes. She experienced it as a technological-barbarian too. That helped breath life into the setting. But her as a character, I think I won't form a hard opinion of her until I someday reread it, knowing.
WTF ever happened to that poor family at the beginning? DID THEY GET THEIR MONAY!?!?! And that jerk supervisor. Yeah, cliffhangers. Next week on Season of Regrets...

The Dark hungers for Ksara.
It has plagued her since she was a child. She is desperate to control it. As a Land Mage, she should be able to control it.
But the Dark is growing wild. She cannot pass within fifty feet of a noktum without its inky arms lashing out to drag her inside. Even the most commonplace shadows have begun to reach for her.
Now her brother lies dying on the deck of her ship. Her only hope of saving him is to sail to Nokte Murosa, a city wedged between two walls of noktum. There, she must strike a deal with the city’s vengeful leader, avoid a fanatical cult that wants to own her…
And resist the whispers in her mind. Voices that accompany the shadows.
The Dark is alive. It wants her, and once it succeeds… It will swallow the entire continent

"Augmented Reality" game Transdimensional Hunter seems too real for comfort as the world of the game merges with reality. Now, teenage game prodigy Lynn Raven will have to conquer the game or be destroyed by it.
REALITY BITES—AND IT HAS BIG TEETHBecoming a global celebrity overnight would make most people happy.
Not Lynn Raven.
As a teenage gaming prodigy, she’s enjoyed years of anonymity behind the virtual mask of Larry Coughlin, war-hardened vet and virtual gaming mercenary. But now Lynn has stepped out of the shadows to compete in the cutting-edge augmented reality game TransDimensional Hunter that has taken the world by storm.
And she’s winning.
But with success has come swarms of paparazzi drones, jealous teammates, and a backstabbing rival team that will use any trick in the book to ruin her.
Then there’s the game itself. At times, the “augmented” reality seems too real for Lynn’s comfort, and strange accidents keep happening. Something is going on; she just has to figure out what.
Lynn would much rather fight monsters than do paparazzi interviews, but somehow she’ll have to master both—and pass her senior year to boot. She managed to step into the real, but will the storm of reality now defeat her for good?

It is safe to say that this book is highly recommended. holy smokes, that's gorgeous. I'm such a Tolkien nerd (I first read The Hobbit when I was about 10 years old, iirc), I'm super jealous. Very awesome.

This time two books. One is more of a reference work and the other is related, but more readable. The latter I read a while ago. The first one is called "Tolkien's Library - An Annotated Checklist (Second Edition - Revised And Expanded)" by Oronzo Cilli, published in 2022. People assumed that Tolkien was influenced by classic books. However, he did read the contemporary books of his time. This reference work list all books, which Tolkien owned, wrote about, mentioned in his letters and those of his students that he reviewed. The book has contributions by two well known Tolkien scholars: a foreword by Tom Shippey and an afterword by Verlyn Flieger. That is an indication that it is considered to be a serious work. That and the fact the first edition won the Tolkien Society Awards 2020. It also shows dedication, because the second edition was released just three years after the 2019 first edition. The book has 560 pages and about 3000 entries. That's 94 pages and about 400 entries more than the previous one. There is an in-depth interview with the author around the new edition on YouTube, conducted by the publisher. The author is an Italian independent Tolkien scholar and researcher and the interview is in Italian, but if you turn on the closed captions then you get a proper English translation (and not some automated crap). The second one is called "Tolkien's Modern Reading - Middle-earth Beyond the Middle Ages", by Holly Ordway, published in 2021. Miss Ordway usually writes religion themed books and is a literature academic and Christian apologist focused on Tolkien and other Inklings. I am an atheist, but I didn't use the word apologist to mock her. In fact Christian apologetics is a branch of Christian theology that defends Christianity. I never knew that. Anyway... I bought the book last year and on Reddit miss Ordway was invited to answer questions about a new book, which I was not interested in. So I tried the following... To my surprise miss Ordway answered me with... I prepared three questions in the hope that she would at least answer one... She answered all three! These were her responses... The 382 page hardcover contains a 38 page photo gallery (with both black/white and color pictures). It also contains a list of 200 books by 149 authors, which make the author's point. It appears that the book is well researched and documented. I am not sure if I recommend these books. Both books are intended for scholars or curious nerds like me. Reddit links 1 and 2.

Damn, you're a machine! i`m a fast reader but since december i`m also in a gaming slump (i`m not sure if this term can be applied for gaming but i haven`t played much since mid december) so i`m having more reading hours than usually.
