The Way of Kings - Brandon Sanderson This was the first novel I bought for Kindle. He’d finished TWoT satisfactorily and wanted another big book to sink my teeth into. It didn’t grab me, way back when. Liked the ghost armour/weapons and the world building was incredible, but something felt…off. Finished my previous book a while back and didn’t find anything that snatched my attention, so decided to give it another shot. So far, so good. Just into part 2. I could probably look up the exact date I started reading this. But it would most likely depress me. I don't have as much time for reading as I did when I was young, but I have started and finished several other very large books in the time between starting this and finishing it, which I did today. Turns out, hours of sitting around while on Jury Service, but not actually on a jury is just the ticket. Man - if the final fifth of this book had been reflective of the the first four, I would've finished it in a weekend. Action, plot advancement, character development! Makers Breath - now I'm actually considering getting Book 2! He spent a long, long time and a lot of page real estate developing a world to believe in. It paid off, come the final stages of the book.

This book is weird, but fun. Think "If John Wick found himself in a Final Fantasy game" Low on luck, but not ammo
The last thing Kenneth Jericho needed was a gunfight and car chase with human traffickers. What started as a bad morning only got worse.
A flash of light sends Ken to a strange world filled with magic, hideous monsters, beautiful women, and seemingly unlimited ammo.
With pistol in hand, Ken is thrown into a race against time to stop a local ganglord's reign of terror. But is the thug the brains behind the violence, or is someone - or something - else pulling his strings?

So I am still reading two book series, I am not even going to name them I am so frustrated with them. One said it was a trilogy and I am now waiting for book 7 to come out. If that is not the end I am just stopping I really do not care enough about anything happening in the books I just want to see the ending.
The other is a series that I expected to end at book 5 but just finished book 14, these authors right books that are about 20% of a proper novel and pump them out every couple of months. I actually wrote to the author of this series asking if book 14 was going to be the last because otherwise I was just going to stop reading. I explained that he had killed off so many good characters and for the last 5 books stuck with really shallow boring "crew" members and killed off the last really different and interesting character other than the two main characters. Add to that he pulled a McGuffin out of his but right at the end of book 14. So that was it for me unless it was being wrapped up.

So quick response from the author basically saying it is still continuing but two other 4 book series he wrote will cross over into this one. Will see if they grab me, if not will ditch them all. they are all free anyway so nothing lost on that front.
So will try and knock those over before book 15 of the current series drops.

Read The Sunlit Man by Sanderson. Good stuff, very much a "this is for the fans" book. Huge imprecations and implications for the Cosmere going forward. After that I reread the short story Secret History to refresh my memory. *** Now I'm giving Brian Staveley's "The Emperor's Blades" another go. Tried the first book some years ago but didn't get too far. See how it goes this round.

Just reminded me of the Powder Mage series, they weren't too bad. One of Sanderson's students wrote em and managed to get it published.

So have been reading a series of books for a while as they dropped and after book 14 of the Drop Trooper Series, I mentioned above I wrote to the author on his webpage asking when things were going to wrap up. For me the series had grown stale, the characters well all of the good ones except the main two had been killed off and I was just ready to stop. Anyway he said it still had a way to go but was about to entwine with two of his other series that are set in the same universe and timeline. I started the first series : Glory Boy: A Military Sci-Fi Series (Drop Trooper: Birthright Book 1) and am glad I did it has been refreshing reading about new characters in the same storyline playing different if similar roles and whose stories actually intercede with the main book series in several places. In the main books you just did not know who had done some of the things that happened and that impacted the main story characters and plot. Anyway good so far 50% through book 1 of 4 then there is another series: Droptrooper: Recon with 4 books after that. After reading these it will hopefully explain the weird thing that happened at the end of book 14 of the main book series.

By an interesting coincidence, I wave started a new book and audio book at the same time. New book: When Todd’s critically damaged ship dropped out of hyperspace near the Human colony world of Azure, he had no memory of his past. He didn’t know who he was, or even what he was, and the Humans didn’t either. That didn’t stop the colonists of Azure—they took him in, anyway…even though they didn’t understand how he could do some of the things he could do.
Todd and his descendants consider themselves Human—eight armed and water-breathing—but Human, nonetheless. After seventy years living among Humans, Todd’s descendants are going back out into the Union to make their mark—from fifteen-year-old Verne, who’s a little short to be a mercenary, to Harryhausen, who wants to be the most famous PI in the galaxy. Eventually they learn that the rest of the Galactic Union knows them as Wrogul, intelligent octopus-like beings known for science and the ability to perform surgery like no other race can.
These Wrogul do more than just practice medicine, but they still intend to do no harm. Unfortunately, the Humans, whether they have two arms or eight, have powerful enemies... and the Wrogul may have no choice. On audio: In the year 3016, the Second Empire of Man spans hundreds of star systems, thanks to the faster-than-light Alderson Drive. No other intelligent beings have ever been encountered, not until a light sail probe enters a human system carrying a dead alien. The probe is traced to the Mote, an isolated star in a thick dust cloud, and an expedition is dispatched. In the Mote the humans find an ancient civilization--at least one million years old--that has always been bottled up in their cloistered solar system for lack of a star drive. The Moties are welcoming and kind, yet rather evasive about certain aspects of their society. It seems the Moties have a dark problem, one they've been unable to solve in over a million years. This one is a science fiction masterpiece. Probably the best example of First Contact fiction out there.

I've read those too I just remembered or didn't remember and had to do some google detective work but this may have been the first Sci Fi/Fantasy book I read" Lord Valentine's Castle by Robert Silverberg and I believe it was a trilogy. It was lent to me by an aunt and IIRC and am not confusing it with another book has some really weird stuff in it that may have not been overly appropriate for a 14 year old boy or may have been depending on your perspective!!!!! "Up The Line" was another of his that was "interesting" to say the least in many ways. Unicephalon 40-D have you read these books?

Niven and Pournelle were at their best when they collaborated. Legacy of Heorot (with Steven Barnes) was another great one. Futuristic take on Beowulf. I liked Niven and Pournelle too. Because I am a computer nerd I read Jerry Pournelle's column "The View From Chaos Manor" in Byte Magazine before I read his science fiction. And I am still thinking whether to read Tolkien's Beowulf translation or not, although I am not interested in his academic work.

I read some of Niven's novels that I no longer have and cannot remember what they were but for some reason his work never grabbed me, I still have Destiny's Road and I do not remember it at all except that it disappointed me.
