The Mote in Gods Eye is a classic. An interesting take and scary as hell to boot. I'll have to start re-reading my Larry Niven collection Niven and Pournelle were at their best when they collaborated. Legacy of Heorot (with Steven Barnes) was another great one. Futuristic take on Beowulf. Sensational book.

I read some of Niven's novels that I no longer have and cannot remember what they were but for some reason his work never grabbed me, I still have Destiny's Road and I do not remember it at all except that it disappointed me. The Ringworld series is probably his best known work. I'm partial to his Dream Park works (again written with Barnes) Supposedly, with The Mote in God's Eye, Niven came up with the Motie aliens while they used Pournelle's CoDominium universe setting.

I've read those too I just remembered or didn't remember and had to do some google detective work but this may have been the first Sci Fi/Fantasy book I read" Lord Valentine's Castle by Robert Silverberg and I believe it was a trilogy. It was lent to me by an aunt and IIRC and am not confusing it with another book has some really weird stuff in it that may have not been overly appropriate for a 14 year old boy or may have been depending on your perspective!!!!! "Up The Line" was another of his that was "interesting" to say the least in many ways. Unicephalon 40-D have you read these books? No, no I have not. I am on book hiatus at the moment, so much everything else I basically crash into bed and sleep instead of taking my phone and read from it.

The Birthday of one of my favorite Authors. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way – in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

THE TRUE STORY OF THE BRONTË SISTERS AS ONLY TIM POWERS COULD WRITE IT.
This is a ghost story. It is a story about werewolves, and things that go bump in the night. It is a story of an ill-fated land, the pathless moors of Northern England so well chronicled in Wuthering Heights. And it is the story of a real family whose destiny it is to deal with this darkly glamorous and dangerous world.
When young Emily Brontë helps a wounded man she finds at the foot of an ancient pagan shrine in the remote Yorkshire moors, her life becomes contentiously entwined with his. He is Alcuin Curzon, embittered member of a sect working to eradicate the resurgent plague of lycanthropy in Europe and northern England.
But Emily’s father, curate of the Haworth village church, is responsible for having unwittingly brought a demonic werewolf god to Yorkshire forty years ago—and it is taking possession of Emily’s beloved but foolish and dissolute brother. Curzon must regard Emily’s family as a dire threat.
In spite of being at deadly odds, Emily and Curzon find themselves thrown together in fighting werewolves, confronting pagan gods, even saving each other from the lures of moorland demons. And in a final battle that sweeps from the haunted village of Haworth to a monstrous shrine far out on the moors, the two of them must be reluctant allies against an ancient power that seems likely to take their souls as well as their lives.

I think books first is the right way for The Expanse. By necessity the show changes some stuff and does it well I think. Book 4 is the only one that the TV series changed that I personally didn't think they got it right. Be interested to see what you think after you've read OT and watched season 4.

Rough going with Staveley's "Unhewn Throne" trilogy. Started "speed reading" at the last fifth or six of the second book. Almost put it down thrice. This guy's characters (particularly a few antagonists) have so much plot armour it hurts. On top of that, his protagonists continue to make dumb (I mean really dumb) decisions in furtherance of a plot I've lost interest in. There's trying to show characters that make realistic choices, and then there's, whatever this is. He's a great study in how there's apparently quite a difference between the two. He's trying to show characters that appear to make realistic choices that don't work out in the end but they don't follow realistic human behaviour.
He also tells, he doesn't show. "These guys are the most elite guards ever" ... "But, they act like fucking idiots every time we see them." I dunno what I'm reading next but it's not book three of the Unhewn trilogy.

What are you wanting to read? R Scott Bakker's third series. Patrick Rothfuss' third book. Scott Lynch's fourth book. I am trying to clear my backlog. No PC for the last 4 days and have knocked over the last two books of a series of four by Rick Partlow called the Birthright series which started with "Glory Boys" which was pretty good and just started the second of four of another of his series called "Recon" all are independent but also part of a larger 14 book "Droptrooper" series which I had finished but where all three will join up in book 15. Then I have another series that has two books to finish a 7 book series but I might just abandon it. The I am not beholden to any book series other than ones that may or may not continue. I am trying to decide whether to re-read old paperbacks I have forgotten or re-read The Dresden Files, have wanted to for a while but watched the 1 series on tv that was made and it has inspired me even more to re-read them. EDIT: Just remembered that the last book in "The Wars of Light and Shadow" by Janny Wurts which started with "The Curse of The Mistwraith" a series I started reading in 1996 is finally due out. The last one "Stormed Fortress" was released in 1996/7. Has taken her forever to finish the series. Will definitely have to start back at book 1 of the first five, worried they may not live up to my memory of them, perhaps a bit too adolescent.

Some treasures are better left buried.
Godsblighted. That’s what the villagers call her.
Even within her family’s protection, Rowan has always known she was different. But now she has the chance to prove that she can protect herself. The chance to prove that different doesn’t mean cursed. Leaving behind the broken promise of her failed magic, Rowan joins her mentor in his search for a Giant’s artifact known as the Grief Draw. But finding it only adds to her problems. Because the ancient Giants were right. This lantern brings pain.
Rowan’s magic might be the barest spark, but it is enough to connect her to Gavyn, a young man trapped inside the lantern after a failed attempt to destroy it. He is suddenly Rowan’s only hope for understanding the lantern before it kills again. And she is his only hope for freedom. With fanatic treasure hunters and power-hungry lords closing in, Rowan and Gavyn must figure out how to use the lantern before someone else sets off the weapon even the Giants feared.
For lovers of Dungeons & Dragons RPGs, this is a book from the sweeping epic fantasy world of Eldros Legacy.

OK, so I had got to book 14 of Drop Trooper by Rick Partlow and as per above asked the author when the series would wrap up and he said not soon. He said there would be some cross over in the next book with his other two Drop Trooper series: Birthright and Recon of which I was completely unaware.
So read both of those (8 Books) and they were pretty good, if you like Sci Fi Military stuff and it was good to see how the three series intertwined and to see things in the main story arc from a different perspective.

Couldn't decide what to read after putting down the Unhewn Trilogy.
Saw a couple people who'd read Bakker recommend "The Blacktongue Thief" by Christopher Buehlman.
Read the first page, and I think I'm already hooked. Seems to be a mesh between Abercrombie and Lynch so far. Don't think it'll get as deep as Bakker does but this might hit a different niche.

Peacemakers. The Galactic Union’s most capable enforcers and resolute negotiators, their name alone elicits fear and awe among the Union’s citizenry. When necessary, the Peacemaker Guild deputizes citizens to carry out special missions of great difficulty and danger.
The only person ever to land a Combat Assault System, Personal (CASPer) from high-altitude free fall without a parachute, Tara Mason’s career as a mercenary showed promise, but it crumbled under poor choices and even worse leadership. Given a chance to clear her name and restore her reputation, she’s agreed to undertake a mission of critical importance to the Guild.
With two Peacemakers, the near-AI Lucille, and new allies at her side, Tara Mason and Force 25 seek out the tested professionals of the Victoria Forces, who face a serious threat from a shadowy adversary. The Victoria Forces, though, are no pushover, and when threatened, they respond with CASPers, tanks, and flyers at the ready.
Taking the field alongside their friends, Tara Mason and Force 25 charge into battle, unaware that events throughout the galaxy are shaping the race to recover Jessica’s father and his secrets. The time to fight has come, and Force 25 must win the day—against overwhelming odds—or the Galactic Union, itself, may be the next casualty of the Omega War!

Again some books written by Tolkien. One you can read, but this time you can read music. The first one is called "The Road Goes Ever On". The first edition was published in 1968, the second in 1978 and the third was first published in German in 1993 and in English in 2002. Later editions contain additional songs and information. The book contains various poems (which were intended as songs for the road) by J.R.R. Tolkien, and the music was added by Donald Swann. This was a collaboration between the two artists. The book contains the songs as text and in sheet music. It also contains a CD with the songs. The book contains one of the longest samples of the language Quenya, in the shape of the song "Namárië" (which appears on the cover in Tengwar), as well as the Sindarin prayer "A Elbereth Gilthoniel" with grammatical explanations. Tolkien's notes in the book provide information about the First Age of Middle-earth that was not otherwise publicly available until the publication of The Silmarillion. Many owners of the book complained that the CD was not included. However, in my copy the CD was present. I listened to the songs before I bought it and I was persuaded by its price: 13 euros because of a discount. The hardcover is large enough for the sheet music to be readable and it contains the CD in a cover, glued inside the book at he back. Another deal I couldn't say no to was 25 euros for the deluxe collector's edition of "the Hobbit". It is similar to the 50th anniversary slipcased collector's edition, but slipcase and hardcover are not gold, but green instead. All monochrome images are not printed on a yellow background, but on light green instead. It also contains a couple of full color pictures. All created by Tolkien. Then I bought some interesting low budget hardcovers of "the Hobbit", "the Fellowship of the Ring", "the Two Towers", "the Return of the King" and "the Silmarillion". These are about 15 euro each (plus or minus a euro). These "collector editions" are called "unjacketed", because they don't come with dust covers, but have beautiful fake cloth covers instead. They also have a lower quality paper, which is glued and not sewn. The print quality is OK. The Silmarillion was released on the first of February 2024. They are a bit smaller than a regular hardcover, but not much, so they are easy to read. "The Hobbit" has many black and white illustrations. All the maps are using black and red ink. Only the LotR books use the same page numbering as the full size editions, which is handy. The other books didn't try to use the full size page numbering. Perhaps the information about those editions may help you when you want to start reading on a budget. And these do look good.

Been awhile since I posted in here and even more ironic pretty sure I am reading the same thing I was, series wise, last time. Kind of in a weird spot with my reading because reasons kind of want a different book reader or a different place where I can buy books online so I am stuck with my library being more or less it...unless I go to actual book books or an actual library. Anyways: And apparently Weber is releasing another mainline Honorverse novel starring Honor Harrington...maybe? This has encouraged me to go back and read the series which is still pretty good military science fiction and that and Halo are making me think about my own burgeoning science fiction setting again so there is that. But its a bit weird in this regard, and kind of a reason to mention this one...but the synopsis of the next book makes me think that it is set either around this book or between this book and the next one. So bit of a head scratcher and not sure when I will get around to reading it and finding it out kind of makes me not want to finish re reading the series. Specifically though skipped Basilisk Station and started re reading my favorite of the novels first, Honor of the Queen which was still amazing. Then Short Victorious War is a bit odd since it just feels like Honor's first steps into bigger more important commands and the book does not focus on her *crew* that much which felt a bit dissapointing though the First Battle of Hancock set the scene for so much of what would happen later on. Meanwhile this one has to be one of the rougher books of the series, hard to get through, not so much because its poorly written or bad or anything just what happens to Paul Tankersley and how it happens is one of the biggest tragedies of the entire series...and this is speaking as someone who almost considers Admiral White Haven to be my favorite character. Though that is skipping ahead a bit.

I used to LOVE the Honor Harrington series. But somewhere around Echoes of Honor/Ashes of Victory it seemed ot become less a mil-sf series and more a political thriller. Also, I found the Honor/White Haven dynamic super-creepy And yes, there's another book coming in April. And interestingly, it appears to be about the events of Field of Dishonor from the point of view of one of Honor's junior officers: Lieutenant Brandy Bolgeo has come home from the Battle of Hancock station wounded in both body and spirit. She will need months to regenerate her lost leg, but how long will it take to heal her heart?
She’s come home to find that her wounds, her ship’s brutal damage, the deaths of so many friends, were the fault of an arrogant, aristocratic coward who broke and ran in the face of the enemy. Who left her ship to pay the price for his craven desertion under fire. And whose powerful political allies are determined to protect and preserve him at any price.
They have held hostage the declaration of war until Lord Pavel Young escaped the consequences of his cowardice. They didn’t care what it cost the Navy. They didn’t care what it cost the entire Star Kingdom of Manticore. Their tactics have cost the Royal Navy the priceless initiative as revolution and military purges wrack the People’s Republic of Haven, and that lost window of opportunity will cost the Star Kingdom seventeen years of bloody warfare and hundreds of thousands of deaths.
Now Young is free to seek vengeance on the people he feels have “wronged” him. People like Paul Tankersley and Honor Harrington. Paid duelists, smear tactics, hired assassins in public restaurants . . . nothing is beneath Pavel Young. But Captain Harrington can look after herself, and Pavel Young is about to face the fury of the woman the newsies call the “Salamander.” Yet who will save the Star Kingdom from the repercussions of his actions?
Women and men like Brandy Bolgeo are about to pay the toll for the Star Kingdom of Manticore’s honor.

I was excited to see a new Honor Harrington book but the blurb put me off, it doesn't really say how much Honor (and Nimitz more importantly) will be in it and that's the main reason I'd be reading it.
I am having trouble even remembering how the last book ended TBH, it's been a while.
