Finished The Blacktongue Thief. Overall, enjoyed it thoroughly. Happy to say my "Page one review" was pretty spot on. Lynch + Abercrombie, but there's a bit of Rothfuss' latter half of Kingkiller 2 in there, in the form of a very "fey" magic system at times. Characterization was good, reminiscent of Abercrombies everyone's-greydark, but a bit more balanced with "not everyone is the same shade of asshole." They mostly were, but not all. Very curious to see a book 2, but it looks like we're getting a prequel first. I absolutely love the "mischievous" recurring element in this book. *** After that I did some searching through old recommendations I have bookmarked and now I'm well into Richard Nell's "Ash and Sand" trilogy starting with... So far I'm liking it too. Not as witty/mischievous/sarcastic as Blacktongue, but the protagonists are interesting. Starts out very similar to Peter V Brett's Warded Man. The author's added a third PoV to balance out his first PoV but it's the first PoV I'm more curious about by far. We'll see how that goes.
Assuming this trilogy doesn't take a gigantic leap downwards in quality I'll likely finish it. Next on the list is, "The Malevolent Seven" by Sebastien de Castell, which looks promising.

Anyone read: Edge of Collapse: A Post-Apocalyptic Survival Thriller by Kyla Stone I tried to start it and was either really not in the mood for the very beginning or it just turned me off the very circumstance of the main character at the start. Want to know whether to push on, it has great reviews.

I just bought a Silmarillion and now I bought another. This time not a cheap one, but a deluxe version, illustrated by Ted Nasmith. He is my favorite Tolkien Illustrator, but alas, he didn't do many of Tolkien's books. This one is an absolute beauty. He did one earlier, but the new one has some new illustrations. That is what Ted always does. He is never satisfied with just a re-release and always tries to add something to it. The book and slipcase are orange and a lot of people don't like that color, but hey... I am Dutch, so it cannot be orange enough. Here is a review of both the trade and the deluxe versions. Maybe you'll understand why I wanted the deluxe edition. I like this (long) interview with Ted Nasmith. It shows a bit what kind of person he is. I like him.

Another space western: Talia Merritt, a former military sniper once known as Death’s Handmaiden, is a woman haunted by her past. Her cybernetic arm and her phantom—the implant that allows her to control it—serve as a constant reminder of what she’s lost. But Talia is hoping to leave her past and her reputation behind and start anew on the colony world of Goruden, a hardscrabble planet of frontier-minded people seeking a better life. And she’s finally earned enough to start to make that dream come true.
In the bucolic town of Tsuri, she interviews for a job as a marksmanship instructor for local bigwig Signore Ferran Contesti. But Contesi is not what he seems. A recent arrival on Goruden, he hopes to mold the colony world in his own image—an image at odds with the unencumbered life free of government and corporate meddling that Talia has come to find.
Soon, Talia finds herself thrust into the start of another conflict. Talia desperately wants to stay out of it, but she may not have that luxury.
With the fate of a planet and her own peace of mind hanging in the balance, Talia must decide whether or not to once again take up the mantle of Death’s Handmaiden. . . .

Okay so these books have taken over my life, I even cut back on gaming time the last few days to read instead. In 8 days I have read the prequel Novella and 4 (halfway through the 5th) of the 7 novels. They are engrossing, harrowing and in parts physically affect my body, heart rate, blood pressure and make me anxious for the characters. I have had to put them down on occasions to take some deep breaths and calm myself down as I get so invested in a characters fate. Are they top shelf literature, no but they are damn well written in terms of story and characters and as I said getting you invested. Some parts of the story are a bit predictable but the thing about that is just when you think you know where things are going it takes a good plot twist. I can see why with almost 20,000 reviews they are rated 4.3 on Amazon. For the first time in a long while I have rated a book a 5 giving a couple of them 5. If I have one annoyance the book covers do spoil the story in small ways sometimes, so I won't post any more covers. FYI the books are set in Michigan so if you live there you may or may not want to read them.

A pretty short novel. Almost a novella. But the series is really entertaining if you want a REALLY different take on Iron Man. Amelia’s lost in space. Trapped on the other side of a quantum gate she can’t access. When she wakes up on an alien starship, her first order of business is going home. But that isn’t as easy as it sounds. Between pirates and giant metal robots, Amelia has her work cut out for her.
And if she does get home… will she even recognize it?

Within the Galactic Union, few entities are as powerful—or as feared—as the Mercenary Guild. They have absolute power; after all, they are the ones with the weapons. The only other armed agency, the Peacemaker Guild, is far smaller and unable to bend them to their will. But absolute power has the tendency to corrupt absolutely, and this is becoming increasingly apparent as the guild’s members pursue their hidden agendas.
Leeto, the Merc Guild’s Speaker, and the Veetanho General Peepo are no different than the rank and file. They will use any means necessary—within the law or not—to accomplish their goal of destroying humanity. With the invasion of Earth already complete, a single compliant Hunter could be the Guild’s perfect weapon to finally accomplish their goals.
Except that Hunters aren’t known for their compliance.
Sparks are sure to fly as the unstoppable force of the Mercenary Guild comes up against the immovable object that is the will of the galaxy’s deadliest assassins. Guns in the light battle knives in the dark as the Mercenary Guild takes on the Depik Hunters, and only one will emerge victorious. Who will survive to kill another day?

Last time music, this time art. Tolkien also made cover designs, illustrations, and sketches. The maps were usually done by his son, Christopher. Lately there are several special editions of the "the Hobbit", "the Lord of the Rings" and "the Silmarillion", using the label "Illustrated by the Author". These sure look fancy, but I feel these are over the top. Tolkien never intended such editions and many of the images are used out of context or are missing explanatory texts. One earlier version of "the Hobbit" is the deluxe slipcased version from 2004, which is the exception. That one feels like the illustrations fit the content. Some of the originals were in black and white, which H.E. Ridditt colored in. The whole presentation feels like the images belong there. Other images got a proper description at the start of the book. The quality of is book is superb. If you come across one then it is worth buying. Today's book is "the Art of the Hobbit", by J.R.R. Tolkien and edited by Wayne Hammond and Christina Skull, published in 2011. This is a large format 144 page hardcover in a slipcase, containing Tolkien's own illustrations and Hammond & Skull provide what role these have played in the writing and the release of "the Hobbit". It also contains some foldout pages, which in my opinion should have been normal pages. The paper and print quality is great. The illustrations of the slipcase and hardcover are designed by Tolkien too. Because the latest "Illustrated by the Author" special edition is not my first choice (because of the earlier mentioned reasons) and because some complained that there are quality problems, I recommend either the 2004 slipcased deluxe edition or another version of "the Hobbit" and "the Art of the Hobbit" instead. If you still want to go for an "Illustrated by the Author" hardcover then go for the normal hardback version. I added the white marker ribbon.

Some lies can’t be untold.
As the victim of a magical experiment, Bex now uses her skills as a treasure hunter to keep herself and her sister safe from those who would use them. She’s learned to use everything from little lies and manipulations to the spell branded into her palm. But her sister is dying. The trinkets and spells Bex hunts down for her aren’t enough anymore. Bex needs to find something bigger. But bigger treasures come with bigger risks. And bigger lies.
Rowan might be considered the foremost expert on Giant artifacts now her mentor is dead, but she’s hidden herself away to protect the world from the Grief Draw, a powerful lantern that destroys anyone who touches it. Nothing can convince her to abandon that duty. Until a charismatic treasure hunter tracks her down and tells her she’s needed to find another dangerous artifact. Rowan isn’t prepared for a trip to the distant isle of Taur, and something seems off about Bex’s story. But can she afford to say no when Humanity’s chances against the Giants might be the truth between Bex’s lies?
The search will take all of Bex’s cunning and Rowan’s expertise as well as a deep trust between them. But can trust be earned when Giant magic is involved?

So finished all of the seven books in this series, the prequel novella and a very short story that fans had requested giving a farewell to the main characters of the book as the author has said she does not plan to add to this series. The farewell was a really nice way to wrap up what had been a very harrowing journey for the main characters. If you are into post apocalypse novels I wholly recommend "The Edge of Collapse" series by Kyla Stone. 4.5 out of 5 from me. She has written sever other series of a similar nature, but I am moving back to a Military Sci Fi series that is part of Rick Partlow's "Drop Trooper" World called "Psi Wars". This and the "Birthright" and "Recon" series apparently are all going to merge in book 15 of Drop Trooper which I cannot now wait for after being ready to give it up after book 14.

This time I got two graphic novels... The first one is Tolkien's "the Hobbit", adapted by Charles Dixon with Sean Deming and illustrated by David Wenzel. The book was first released between 1989 and 1990 in 3 parts by Eclipse Comics. A revised edition was released in 2006, which was supposed to have 30 more pages, but my research showed that the original and the revised edition both had 133 pages. In 2012 6 more pages were supposed to be added, however the book doesn't mention that. Anyway, the latest edition has 144 pages. It is all very vague. Of course the story is abridged, but it is as close to the original story as possible. It even includes a map of Wilderland and Thror's map. It is worth the read and is a great intro to "the Lord of the Rings". The book is released by HarperCollins and it has the blessing of the Tolkien Estate (the club that controls Tolkien's copyright). One minor issue is that the spine of this softcover is a millimeter off. The rest of the book is great and the book is absolutely stunning. The second one is called "Tolkien - Lighting Up The Darkness", released February the 27th, 2024, written by Willy Duraffourg, illustrated by Giancarlo Caracuzzo, colored by Flavia Caracuzzo & Joël Odone, and the cover was illustrated by Jean-Sébastien Rossbach. From the publisher: "JRR Tolkien was not always the old Oxford professor, pipe in the mouth, refining his extraordinary work.
In 1915, at age 23, he left for the front with his high school friends, whom he loved like brothers. They take part in the Battle of the Somme which will kill 450,000 people. The horror of war will brand his relationship to friendship, love and creation.
This graphic novel explores the youth of the author of The Lord of the Rings, and his traumatic experience of the battlefields of the First World War, which will forge the imagination of his literary work.
For fans of The Hobbit & Lord of The Rings looking to learn more about the genius behind their favorite epics."The hardcover book has 112 pages. However the story in the above mentioned description takes up only 76 pages. At the back there is an appendix, written by Virginie Duchene-Alliot, which describes a few books known to be in Tolkiens Library and which are considered to be influential in his writing. Finally there are 25 pages of "bonus material", which consists of artwork used in the creation of the book. Of course a book like this cannot be complete, but given its limited scope, it does a great job to get you interested in that part of Tolkien's life. And the graphics are well done.

All Laethine wanted was to go home.
With the death of her beloved husband, the Jaerl of Antiroc, Laethine knew she had to take his place and be a good leader for her people. However, her husband had a secret, one that would thrust her into the cutthroat world of royal interplanetary politics and dark conspiracies.
Now she's beset on all sides, and despite her grief, she must pick herself up and move forward with cold precision, even as her heart breaks with every step.
Victory seems impossible, but she cannot fail, for the fate of her entire planet hangs in the balance.
She must become the Queen's Fixer.

Also started listening to: Hadrian Marlowe, a man revered as a hero and despised as a murderer, chronicles his tale in the galaxy-spanning debut of the Sun Eater series, merging the best of space opera and epic fantasy.
It was not his war.
The galaxy remembers him as a hero: the man who burned every last alien Cielcin from the sky. They remember him as a monster: the devil who destroyed a sun, casually annihilating four billion human lives—even the Emperor himself—against Imperial orders.
But Hadrian was not a hero. He was not a monster. He was not even a soldier.
On the wrong planet, at the right time, for the best reasons, Hadrian Marlowe starts down a path that can only end in fire. He flees his father and a future as a torturer only to be left stranded on a strange, backwater world.
Forced to fight as a gladiator and navigate the intrigues of a foreign planetary court, Hadrian must fight a war he did not start, for an Empire he does not love, against an enemy he will never understand.

Finished the Ash and Sand trilogy + the first book (only one out currently) of Beyond Ash and Sand, the sequel trilogy. Was pretty good but lots left unexplained. Plot took a few unexpected twists but it took plenty of expected ones too. Relied heavily on "handwavy" magic a lot though, magic which still lacks a decent explanation. The protagonist is interesting, I'll give 'im that. Definitely not your standard.
The Sequel, Dark Sea's End, was a nice jaunt but after all the worldbuilding of the previous trilogy, with all the unanswered questions left, it felt a bit "light" comparably. Seemed like he was trying to keep some of the old while going on a "new fresh adventure" but that didn't work out too well with so much left unanswered. I found myself getting a bit bored of certain arcs not because they weren't good necessarily, but because I knew it was just spiraling in themselves rather than addressing things I'd rather have been addressed before meandering.
*** After that I just burned through...
This was a fun ride. It's the first I've read of this author but I realized he's the bloke behind the oft-recommended Greatcoats series.
I enjoyed it thoroughly, this and Blacktongue Thief are the two standouts in all the fantasy I've read this last year or two.
Now I'm already almost done the first Greatcoat book, Traitor's Blade. Likely finish it tonight then onto the next.

So finished Rick Partlow's Psi Wars trilogy meaning I have completed the11 or something books which will merge story in the 15th Drop Trooper book. Most of them were good without being great but the best part was reading about and getting a fuller history of the characters that had had bit parts in the main Drop Trooper storyline. So now just waiting for: Down Range In the meantime I have downloaded some Adrian Tchaikovsky books to read the first of which is: Dogs of War "Rex is a seven foot tall at the shoulder Dog, bulletproof, bristling with heavy calibre weaponry and his voice resonates with sub-sonics especially designed to instil fear. With Dragon, Honey and Bees, he's part of a Multiform Assault Pack operating in the lawless anarchy of Campeche, south-eastern Mexico.
Rex is a genetically engineered Bioform, a deadly weapon in a dirty war. He has the intelligence to carry out his orders and feedback implants to reward him when he does. All he wants to be is a Good Dog. And to do that he must do exactly what Master says and Master says he's got to kill a lot of enemies.
But who, exactly, are the enemies? What happens when Master is tried as a war criminal? What rights does the Geneva Convention grant weapons? Do Rex and his fellow Bioforms even have a right to exist? And what happens when Rex slips his leash?"It's entertaining if not overly complicated and I think is more like an exploration of ethics than anything else.

Possibly my favorite book of all time. Certainly Tolkien's best work (sorry, it just is- fite my IRL if you disagree). And I also have two versions, a nice one and a cheapie one- I re-read it so frequently that I have a cheap paperback version for reading, and then a gorgeous hard-cover version that is just for show/looks. And Ted Naismith is great, I have a book that is just a collection of Tolkien illustrations (I forget the name of it but its like "the art of the world of Tolkien" or something to that effect) that has a ton of his work. He's consistently one of the best Tolkien illustrators, and that's saying something since there's some tough competition out there. ~~~ I've been in a bad reading lull, having stalled out in the middle of multiple books (After the Revolution, Children of Memory, Hail Mary Project, couple of non-fiction books) but lately I've been re-reading the Expanse since I finally got my mother to read the series and I wanted to refresh my memory so I can talk to her about it. But that got me back in the reading routine and so I've been reading a book I got for xmas that is just a collection of academic writings on the topic of the history and development of atheistic satanism: Interesting so far, I didn't realize that satanism had its intellectual roots in 18th-19th century French Catholic socialism, primarily as a purely literary figure who represents political and social emancipation and liberation. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, given the current political leanings and activities of the Satanic Temple (which are awesome and hilarious, fighting for religious freedom, trans rights, etc in very clever ways- check the news for some of their recent actions). Either way, super interesting stuff for anyone who has any interest/background in the sociology of religion or (just the history of ideas).
