When a magical plague is released in a Depression-era New York soup kitchen, private detective Alex Lockerby finds himself in a desperate hunt to catch a madman before he can strike again.
His investigations lead Alex to a famous thief, a daring heist, and the search for a mythic book of ancient magic, but none of that brings him any closer to finding the man responsible for the massacre. With the police and New York’s Council of Sorcerers desperate to find the culprit, Alex becomes a suspect himself, thanks to his ties to the priest who ran the soup kitchen.
Now Alex has his book of spells, a pack of matches and four days to find out where the plague came from, or that authorities will hang the crime squarely on him.

Just read this, which is a collection of comics that give a short story detailing the main Characters of The Expanse before they came together on The Canterbury. It was OK, I would have liked slightly more depth and longer stories but , hey they're comics. Just about to start the latest book in The Expanse today, Book 8

Started this series. It's actually pretty impressive with all the world building that takes place and at how the set up of two multi-universal societies coming into contact with each other plays out.

Series I've started. THe author compares it to "Battlestar Galactica meets Mass Effect" based on the first book, at least, it's pretty accurate: The Ember War Saga (9 Book Series)

Seriously, I live in Australia (books are expensive) and I tried to buy Empire of Bones and it was really hard to get anywhere and each book is AUD $35+ !!!!!! Then was all excited when you recommended The Ember War Saga but in all Australia only one shop has one of the books (book 8) and they are all AUD39+ each. Going to have to cave in and get an amazon account I think.

Too funny, just after I posted the first thing I did was look at Kindle's as you can get all of the books for $42 AUD!!!! What kindle do you use if you don't mind me asking? They seem to range quite largely in price and I have never used one, I am a huge paper book fan but my bookshelves are overflowing already!!!! I can just imagine my wife's look when I teller I am buying 17 more paper back books.

The great thing about the kindle is that Amazon offers a wide variety of books thru their Kindle Unlimited program. For a relatively small monthly fee you can read up to ten books at a time for free. Not all books are available that way but most series typically have the first book available thru Kindle Unlimited. It's the drug dealer business model, the first hit is free. We're fans of ebooks in our home. Project Gutenberg has made an enormous quantity of old books and books no longer in copyright available for free. We have a mirrored copy of all of their books on a hard drive. We have also been able to clear away a lot of paper books which means our house is a lot less cluttered and dusty. And, as noted above, ebooks are often a lot cheaper than printed books. Further, there are several services that will let you know what books by major publishers are on sale. For example, Jim Butcher's Furies pf Calderon is currently on sale for $0.99. Lastly, check out the Baen Free Library. A major science fiction publisher has an entire catalog of decent books for free, including the first Honor Harrington book.

Thanks mousestalker I contemplated getting one ages ago but I just lover my paper books, so much!!!!!!! I don't dare count them but have whole collections of numerous series, plus whole collections of like the top 40 best sci-fi etc. Anyway it will be an easy sell with the wife, given the price thing plus I am sure most of my books will end up "Stored" and shelves cleared, its the one thing where I don't mind clutter but she hates it. I just need to make sure that Australia has access to all the stuff in the US book library as well, there was some weird fight going on with Australia and Amazon and paying Tax. Was going to join Amazon anyway because of The Expanse and American Gods plus they are advertising a new show called "Hannah" that looks cool, plus there are heaps of other shows I want to watch on there as well.

I'm in aus too, and the range of e books seems pretty impressive. I can't say its exactly the same as I've never checked, but you can get a lot of titles (older books mainly) for free. Newer, bigger titles are more (as expected). I have an older paperwhite too, battery lasts forever, and you can store a truckload of books on them. Plus if you have a smartphone there is an app where you can access all that stuff as I find the paperwhite (the older one that I have) can be a little laggy if you are looking to mass download books ect. Plus the kindle store offers recommendations which can be useful.

dazkThe Expanse Novellas are interesting sidequests, and the kindle price isnt too bad, but Id either wait for a collection for them all or if you can get them on kindle. Plus check to see if your library does have digital copies, I know state side lots of them are renting out ebooks now.
